True to his name, Zhao Yu’s appearance was as exquisite as jade. His figure was tall and slender, with a trace of frailty, the kind that evoked pity, like a willow swaying softly in the wind.
At dusk, while taking a stroll through the imperial garden, he happened to see the dragon-and-phoenix twins being carried out by the wet nurses for some fresh air.
Shangguan Yan had already publicly announced that the two were imperial grandchildren. Yet within the palace, there circulated a private rumor, that the twins were actually born from Grandmaster Ye, who, using the secret arts of the Imperial Advisor’s Hall, had carried and given birth to the dragon heirs himself despite being a man.
To keep that secret hidden, the court had declared to the outside world that the children were born of the second prince.
Ha! There had never been a “second prince” before, how curious that once the dragon-and-phoenix twins appeared, a second prince suddenly emerged out of nowhere.
If they were truly the second prince’s offspring, why hadn’t he and his wife been brought into the palace as well? The twins had already been in the palace for two months before the so-called second prince and his consort finally arrived.
And surely no one would claim the two infants had made their way into the palace all on their own!
The truth must be that Shangguan Yan had spent two months searching the common folk for someone to play the role of “second prince”!
The more Zhao Yu thought about it, the more he believed in his own cleverness, certain that he had seen through what others had not.
His Majesty had given all his affection to those twins and not so much as glanced at the beauties in his harem.
Only when the dragon-and-phoenix twins were gone would Her Majesty finally turn his attention to the harem once more.
Jealousy surged in Zhao Yu’s chest, igniting reckless courage where none had ever existed before.
Normally, he was a timid man who dared not even speak loudly, always afraid of offending someone. But at that moment, driven by jealousy, his reason deserted him, and he was consumed by madness.
He began walking toward the dragon-and-phoenix twins.
He was well-liked in the harem, and the wet nurses recognized him. Smiling, he stepped forward and bowed politely to the twins.
No one knew that Zhao Yu actually possessed some knowledge of medicine. Aware of the treacherous nature of the inner palace, he always carried poison on him for self-defense.
The poison he used was colorless and tasteless. Whether ingested or inhaled, it caused no symptoms for the first three days; only on the fourth day did its toxicity begin to manifest.
When people were poisoned, they usually only investigated what had been eaten or touched that very day, never what might have happened three days earlier.
It was, therefore, a very safe method.
“The Little Prince and Little Princes are truly adorable.” He said with a gentle smile.
The two wet nurses had already placed the dragon-and-phoenix twins back into their cradle. Gazing at the babies, it was difficult not to agree with Zhao Yu’s words.
The two little highnesses were indeed the most beautiful infants they had ever seen.
“The weather is quite hot.” Zhao Yu said as he opened his folding fan. He first fanned himself lightly, then, while everyone’s attention was elsewhere, secretly sprinkled the powdered poison onto the fan.
When he turned back around, he saw the dragon-and-phoenix twins staring at him with wide eyes.
His brows twitched!
For a brief moment, guilt shot through him, as though he had been caught red-handed!
But he quickly calmed himself. Impossible, impossible! They were just a pair of infants. Even if they had seen something, what could they possibly understand? What could they say?
Holding the fan, Zhao Yu began to walk slowly toward the cradle.
The twins looked at him for three seconds, and then, as if by perfect mutual understanding, they clenched their little fists tightly and began to cry loudly and in unison.
“Oh dear, what’s wrong with the Little Princess and Little Prince?”
The older of the two wet nurses spoke first, and everyone hurriedly gathered around, trying to see what was wrong with their little highnesses.
Zhao Yu was instantly blocked outside the crowd.
Now no matter how much he fanned, the air would not reach them.
However, heaven never completely cuts off a man’s path. By chance, Zhao Yu’s eyes caught sight of a perfect opportunity for his crime.
The cradle was placed inside a small pavilion, on a hard floor with a few steps below it.
If he tripped the wet nurse standing in front of him, she would fall forward and knock over the cradle, sending the dragon-and-phoenix twins tumbling out.
Infants’ heads were heavy; if they fell, they would most certainly land headfirst. If luck favored him, they might even roll down the steps, an accident that would undoubtedly be fatal.
Without hesitation, Zhao Yu stretched out his foot.
The wet nurse failed to notice and tripped, falling straight toward the cradle.
“Ah——little highnesses——" She screamed in horror.
Zhao Yu’s lips curled into a triumphant smile.
But just as he was preparing to watch the two children fall to their deaths, something completely unexpected happened. The very instant their heads were about to hit the ground, the two babies vanished with a sudden flash!
Zhao Yu’s face drained of color, his soul nearly flying out of his body. He collapsed to the ground, utterly terrified, as though he had truly seen a ghost!
……
At the eastern outskirts of the imperial capital, in a deserted and abandoned alley, Liao Chen, who had been pursued for three days and nights, finally reached his limit. Unable to endure any longer, he stopped and resolved to face his pursuer in a life-and-death duel.
He stood tall against the wind beneath the moonlight, clad in a robe of ashen gray. The wide sleeves and hem of his garment billowed dramatically in the night breeze.
Although he was a monk, his face was almost too beautiful for a man, his alluring peach-blossom eyes gleamed like they had drunk the very essence of a ten-mile orchard in full bloom.
Who could see such a face and not exclaim, “What kind of demon monk is this?”
Yet beneath his right eye was a single tear mole, lending him an unexpected air of loneliness and mystery.
He curved his lips into a crooked smile and said coldly, “You pompous Taoist, this poor monk has tolerated you long enough. Do you truly believe I cannot defeat you?”
Taoist Qingfeng, dressed in a blue Taoist robe, wore his dark hair bound atop his head with a simple wooden hairpin, exuding a serene and immortal grace.
He said indifferently, “I never asked you to hold back your hand.”
Liao Chen brushed the dust from his sleeve and smiled lazily. “All this fuss just because I stole your robe and got you seen under the moonlight by others? Fine, then why don’t I let you watch me in return?”
Taoist Qingfeng’s gaze turned icy. “Shameless!”
He struck with a lethal move, aiming straight at Liao Chen.
Liao Chen narrowed his eyes.
So this pompous guy was serious this time?
It seemed he had improved quite a bit this year.
He pushed lightly off the ground with the tip of his toe, soaring into the air. The power contained within his monk’s robe could no longer be restrained, and the overflowing energy surged outward, almost forming a terrifying spiral of wind and force.
“You pompous Taoist, it’s about time I showed you this humble monk’s true strength. Don’t blame me for not warning you. Once the Mercy Palm is unleashed, it will not rest until death!”
“Take this!”
The instant his words fell, he lunged forward with a sudden burst of force, striking straight toward Taoist Qingfeng with killing intent.
“Wuaahh!”
Just then, a tiny, milky voice suddenly sounded from behind him.
His body froze in midair, his breath caught in his throat, and with a startled cry, he lost control and tumbled straight down from the sky.
Falling along with him was a small, chubby baby.
He instinctively reached out and caught the child in his arms.
Taoist Qingfeng saw an opportunity to finish him off with one decisive stomp, but at that very same moment, another baby came plummeting down from above and landed squarely on him.
Saving someone was a reflex, let alone when it was such a tiny child.
Taoist Qingfeng immediately caught the little one and held him carefully in his arms.
Neither of the two men had any idea what had just happened. The next moment, out of nowhere a small medicine chest came glinting down from the sky.
No one caught it.
It hit the ground with a lonely thud.
A cold breeze blew past, and the medicine chest lay there quietly, utterly still.
Meanwhile, both Taoist Qingfeng and Liao Chen stood frozen, each holding a baby in their arms, staring at one another in utter bewilderment.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
