Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

Feng Wuxiu looked like a chubby little squirrel as he nibbled away. “This is the first time I’ve learned that fish can be eaten raw, and it’s not even fishy at all!”

“The marinated crab tastes even better.” Chang Jing said.

Feng Wuxiu hesitated at first, but after his confidence was boosted by the sashimi, he picked up a piece of crab dripping with spicy red oil and sauce, closed his eyes, and took a big bite.

The translucent crab meat, mixed with the salty, tender, and juicy roe, burst with flavor the moment it touched his tongue, awakening every taste bud.

The crab had been soaked in wine to remove its fishy odor, then marinated in a secret sauce that was perfectly balanced, savory, spicy, and slightly sweet.

Ahhh!

Delicious!

Liao Chen, on the other hand, wasn’t used to eating raw food, and for once, his taste aligned with Taoist Qingfeng’s.

Gu Jiao sampled a bit of everything, and her favorite was the fish soup. It was wonderfully fresh and flavorful.

She had assumed that Xiao Heng, having grown up in the State of Zhao, would dislike raw food, but to her surprise, he handled it even better than Long Yi.

After the meal, Chang Jing escorted Liao Chen, Taoist Qingfeng, and Feng Wuxiu to the courtyard prepared for them to rest in, while Gu Jiao and Xiao Heng stayed behind to speak with Chang Kun about the purpose of their visit.

“The first sect leader of the island might be an old acquaintance of mine. I wish to pay my respects.” Gu Jiao said tactfully.

In truth, the first sect leader had already passed away before Gu Jiao was even born, so by age alone, it was impossible for the two to have known each other.

But Chang Kun had witnessed far too many extraordinary things in connection with that man, so he no longer dared to interpret anything related to him in ordinary terms.

Chang Kun asked cautiously, “Forgive my boldness, but are you and he… from the same place?”

He knew that the first sect leader had come from another world, and since Gu Jiao claimed to have known him, she might be a person from that same world as well.

“Yes.” Gu Jiao admitted honestly.

Her frankness stunned Chang Kun for a moment.

Then he smiled and said, “To be honest, I’ve always been deeply curious about both you and the first sect leader.”

Gu Jiao said, “If you wish to hear it, I can tell you. But it isn’t something that can be explained in just a few words, so I may have to trouble you by staying on the island for a few more days.”

Chang Kun quickly replied, “How could it be considered a bother? You are a friend of the first Island Lord, which makes you an honored guest of the Hidden Night Sect. The Hidden Night Sect will always be open to you. You may stay for as long as you wish, it would be my honor.”

He truly meant what he said.

Gu Jiao nodded. “Very well.”

“I shall first take you to see the first Island Lord.”

Chang Kun led the two of them toward the Hidden Night Sect’s forbidden grounds, which were actually located behind the Chang Family residence. The front half of the back mountain was open for anyone to enter, but the rear half was marked by a boundary stele carved by the first Island Lord himself. No one other than successive Island Lords were allowed beyond it.

Even Chang Jing had never stepped inside.

Only Long Yi was an exception, for he had originally lived within the restricted area.

As they passed the boundary stele, Gu Jiao lifted her hand and gently brushed its surface. She could almost feel the lingering presence of her godfather in the air.

Xiao Heng caught the wistful look in her eyes, and once again, the vinegar jar in his heart was overturned.

What is this? After all this time, you still can’t forget him?

Who exactly is the most important man in your heart?

With a dark expression, Xiao Heng followed behind Chang Kun and Gu Jiao as they entered a large, spacious courtyard.

Chang Kun said, “This is where the first Island Lord once lived. Long Yi also resides here now.”

Something occurred to Gu Jiao, and she asked, “What was Long Yi’s name when he was a child?”

Chang Kun glanced back at Long Yi, who promptly looked up at the sky as if he hadn’t heard anything.

Clearing his throat, Chang Kun said, “Mengmeng.”

Gu Jiao: “...”

Long Yi then led the two of them around, showing them every room in the courtyard. Xiao Heng had no desire to look around. Why should he be interested in that man’s belongings?

He stayed behind in the courtyard, drinking tea with Chang Kun instead.

Gu Jiao first went to her godfather’s study, where she found many traces of his handwriting. Most of it recorded his observations and experiences in this world.

There were also several mathematical formulas, apparently used to deduce the coordinates she had once left behind.

As she stared at the familiar handwriting, a wave of indescribable melancholy welled up in her chest. “How did my godfather know that I had been here, and even left coordinates for me? What is it that my memory is missing?”

This study, however, probably wasn’t his real one. He would never have left all of his secrets completely exposed to others.

“Long Yi, is there anywhere else?” she asked.

Long Yi thought for a moment, then brought Gu Jiao to a hidden chamber. He pointed to a small groove in the wall and said, “It can’t be opened.”

This groove was identical to the one in the operating room of the Imperial Advisor’s Hall.

Could this be the spatial coordinate her godfather had left behind?

Gu Jiao silently called for the little medicine chest in her heart.

It did not appear.

Gu Jiao walked out of the back mountain, returned to the side chamber she shared with Xiao Heng, and, with a dark expression, picked up the little medicine chest from the table.

She muttered under her breath, “You just have to make me carry you, don’t you?”.

After placing the little medicine chest into the groove, the previously empty secret chamber indeed revealed a new sight, and what appeared before their eyes was a long, pitch-dark tunnel.

At the instant the passage appeared, Long Yi’s eyes lit up, gleaming with the brightness of a child who had been away from home for many days and had finally found his way back to the harbor that belonged to him.

Without a moment’s hesitation, he dashed eagerly into the passage.

Gu Jiao followed after him.

In truth, Gu Jiao had always been deeply curious. Where did spaces like this come from, and through what means were they left behind in this time and space?

It seemed unlikely that she had built it all by herself. The ancient world’s developed energy and infrastructure were far too insufficient for one person to create such a base in merely a few decades, perhaps not even in a lifetime.

Gu Jiao had once considered whether it could have originated from the research institute of her previous life, yet that hypothesis was soon dismissed.

The equipment in the operating room was far more advanced than anything that institute could have possessed.

At the end of the tunnel, Long Yi pushed open a door. A blinding light poured out, and Gu Jiao instinctively raised her hand to shield her eyes from the glare.

Long Yi plunged straight into the room without hesitation, and once her eyes had adjusted to the brightness, Gu Jiao also stepped forward.

To her surprise, it was not an operating room, but rather a fully equipped laboratory.

In the center stood a rectangular experiment table made of some special kind of metal. Nothing lay upon it, and from the looks of it, it had been carefully tidied by the godfather before his death.

Except for the wall that held the door, the other three walls were lined with shelves about three meters tall, each one filled with transparent glass vessels.

Inside those vessels were soils of varying colors and compositions. In some, plants had successfully sprouted; in others, the soil had corroded and decayed, leaving behind no trace of living vegetation.

The latter made up the vast majority.

All of this, she realized… had been for the cultivation of the purple herb.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
