Though the world was divided into six major states, outside those six were numerous smaller tribes and clans, such as the Turkic people in the northern territories of the State of Jin, and the Dongyi Tribe in the eastern borders of the State of Zhao.

Yu Jin frowned. “But isn’t the Dongyi Tribe in league with bandits and currently at war with our army? How can Dongyi people swagger about so freely in a county belonging to the State of Zhao?”

The man in his thirties replied, “Because peace talks are about to begin.”

Princess Xinyang’s brow furrowed tightly. “Peace talks? And who made that decision?”

The Emperor had never issued such a decree!

Her commanding presence was so strong that for a moment, everyone in the room was subdued by it.

The old man was the first to recover. He looked Princess Xinyang and Yu Jin up and down. Their clothing was simple, yet their bearing was far from ordinary. But given how plainly they were dressed, they couldn’t possibly be nobles from the capital, could they?

No, that was impossible. Why would people of high rank from the capital ever come to a place like this?

After regaining his composure, he said, “Of course, it was Marquis Xuanping’s idea.”

Yu Jin immediately retorted, “How could Marquis Xuanping ever agree to a peace negotiation with a barbaric tribe? Crushing their settlements flat would be far more in line with his style!”

The old man did not answer, but the man in his thirties let out a cold laugh. “That’s because the Dongyi have presented Marquis Xuanping with a beauty as tribute. They say she’s the pearl of the Dongyi, the little daughter most cherished by their king. The carriage that group outside is escorting holds that Dongyi princess. Now do you understand why we stopped you from throwing your lives away?”

Yu Jin turned to her mistress, her expression filled with concern. “Your Highness…”

Princess Xinyang’s eyelashes trembled slightly, and a chilling cold radiated from her entire body.

Yu Jin straightened her posture and said firmly to the men, “Marquis Xuanping already has a wife. He would never betray Princess Xinyang.”

The man sneered. “Marquis Xuanping is a man known for his romantic nature. His relationship with Princess Xinyang has long been nothing more than a facade. Besides, that Dongyi princess is said to be breathtakingly beautiful; no man could remain unmoved upon seeing her.”

Princess Xinyang’s face darkened as she turned and walked out.

“Your… Madame! Madame!”

Yu Jin hastily pulled a broken piece of silver from her pouch, placed it on the table, and rushed after her mistress.

The old man and the younger man both stared at the piece of silver. After a brief three-second pause, they simultaneously stood up, each intending to claim it. But the inn’s waiter was quicker; he darted forward and snatched it first, slipping it into his pocket.

Then, pulling out a handful of copper coins, he ran to the counter and called out, “Boss, the people over there already paid!”

The old man and the other man both pursed their lips in disappointment.

Outside, the Dongyi group had already left. The woman and child had gone, and the injured beggar had been helped away by his companions.

Princess Xinyang stood staring at the now-empty street, a fire of nameless anger burning hotter in her chest.

She lifted her skirts and stepped back into the carriage.

Yu Jin, trembling nervously, followed her inside and sat down beside her, cautiously saying, “Your Highness, please don’t take it to heart. They don’t even know Lord Marquis. They must have made the whole story up.”

Princess Xinyang replied coolly, “Does his temperament really need to be fabricated?”

Yu Jin gave an awkward laugh. “But that was only because you and Lord Marquis weren’t living as husband and wife back then. You didn’t want to be one in truth, remember?”

Princess Xinyang’s tone turned icy. “And I never said I wanted to start over with him now.”

Yu Jin muttered quietly, “Oh… Then, by that reasoning, if Lord Marquis is involved with someone outside, it’s not really wrong, is it?”

Princess Xinyang shot her a sharp glare like a blade.

Yu Jin’s hair stood on end; she quickly corrected herself. “But of course, he would never do such a thing!”

Princess Xinyang closed her eyes. “Let’s go.”

Yu Jin asked softly, “Are we still heading to the camp?”

Princess Xinyang said calmly, “We’re going back to the capital.”

Yu Jin’s face changed. “Your Highness!”

Princess Xinyang leaned back against the cushion and shut her eyes to rest. “My mind is made up. There’s no need to say more.”

“…Yes.” Yu Jin replied reluctantly, lowering her head.

What a pity.

They had been only one step away from meeting Lord Marquis, and now everything had gone awry.

The coachman turned the carriage around and started back the way they had come.

Yu Jin tried several times to persuade her mistress, but Princess Xinyang remained firm in her decision.

In truth, it was not surprising. For a princess of her pride to swallow her dignity and travel such a long way to the border was already an act of courage. Hearing such rumors at the end of her journey, it was only natural that her heart would falter.

Ah, Lord Marquis, Lord Marquis… Don’t blame me for failing to help you. It seems Heaven itself is not on your side this time.

However, just as the carriage was about to leave Li County, something unexpected happened. When they stopped at the post station to change horses, they ran right into the same group of Dongyi people, and both parties happened to be eyeing the same horse.

The Dongyi princess stepped down from her carriage, wearing a veil. Her young figure stood tall and graceful, exuding a fresh and lively charm from head to toe. Her eyes were bright and captivating, shimmering like autumn waters filled with light and spirit.

She truly lived up to her title as the most beautiful woman of the Dongyi Tribe.

Princess Xinyang wore a bamboo hat with a long veil that concealed her entire face, revealing only a faint outline of her features so that no one could truly see what she looked like.

The two women met head-on at the narrow passageway of the post station.

The young princess from Dongyi spoke with arrogance, saying, “I want this horse. You can choose another one.”

Princess Xinyang replied solemnly, “Everything should follow the rule of who comes first. I chose this one first, so you can pick another.”

The Dongyi princess let out a mocking laugh. “Whoever comes first gets it first? I have plenty of silver. However much you pay, I’ll pay double!”

Princess Xinyang’s gaze turned icy. “So what if you have money, or youth? Do you think I have none?”

What did this have to do with age? The way this person spoke was truly strange.

The Dongyi princess eyed her suspiciously for a moment, then extended her hand with a cold snort. “If you have silver, take it out and show me!”

Standing beside Princess Xinyang, Yu Jin quietly reminded her, “Princess, our funds for the journey are almost used up.”

The Dongyi princess turned to the post station keeper and commanded, “Return her silver to her! I’m buying this horse!”

“Yes, yes!” The post station keeper dared not offend Marquis Xuanping’s “beloved woman.” He hurriedly stepped forward and returned two ingots of silver to Yu Jin.

Princess Xinyang’s aura suddenly surged. “I dare you!”

The post station keeper shuddered violently in fright.

The Dongyi princess snapped angrily, “Why are you shouting like that! Do you even know who I am?”

Princess Xinyang sneered. “Of course I do. The woman clinging shamelessly to Marquis Xuanping, the so-called noble daughter from Dongyi Tribe. A mere little tribal girl who dares to call herself a princess. You really don’t know your place.”

“You!” The Dongyi princess was so furious she trembled. “I don’t hit women, but you’d better kneel down and apologize! Do that, and I might forgive you!”

Princess Xinyang’s voice turned cold. “You’re the one who should kneel and apologize to me.”

The Dongyi princess stomped her foot in rage and shouted, “So you refuse the easy way and insist on the hard one! Men, teach them both a lesson!”

Eight Dongyi guards rushed forward at once, surrounding Princess Xinyang and Yu Jin.

The Dongyi princess laughed triumphantly. “Scared now? It’s still not too late to beg for mercy——”

But before she could finish her sentence, a strong figure suddenly descended from above.

No one saw how he moved; in the blink of an eye, all eight Dongyi guards were sprawled on the ground!

The Dongyi princess stared at the fallen men in disbelief. “That’s impossible! You… what kind of sorcery did you use! Everyone, attack!”

The remaining twelve guards charged toward Princess Xinyang and her companions.

But how could these men possibly be a match for Long Yi?

Long Yi defeated them with ease, knocking them all to the ground without breaking a sweat.

Then, in a blur, Long Yi appeared before the Dongyi princess. She stared in terror at the masked man who moved so fast he seemed to leave only afterimages, almost too frightened to speak.

Long Yi’s eyes rolled slightly. He raised a finger and flicked it lightly against her forehead, sending her stumbling backward to fall on the ground with a thud.

Princess Xinyang walked toward her step by step and looked down upon her from above. “Now then, do you still want to steal what belongs to others?”

The Dongyi princess wiped away her tears and shouted angrily, “Who are you! What right do you have to bully me!”

Princess Xinyang’s gaze was sharp as a blade. “I am Princess Xinyang of the State of Zhao, the wedded wife of Marquis Xuanping. So what if I bully you?”

As soon as she finished speaking, she suddenly felt two intense gazes fall upon her.

Instinctively, she turned her head and looked back, only to see Marquis Xuanping standing not far away on an open stretch of ground, staring at her in utter astonishment.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
