Even though the marriage was fake, Xiao Ji didn’t want Qin Fengwen to feel unhappy, so he decided that during the ceremony he would perform the rituals as perfunctorily and half-heartedly as possible.

After dressing neatly, he went to wait outside the Holy Maiden’s bedchamber.

He did not have to wait long before the Holy Maiden, resplendent in a phoenix coronet and flowing ceremonial robes, appeared from the inner hall, escorted by Hong Luan and seven other maidservants.

Hong Luan held a length of red silk in her hands, offering one end to the Holy Maiden and extending the other end toward Xiao Ji.

Xiao Ji glanced around but did not see Qin Fengwen, and he guessed that she was likely remaining in a secret chamber.

Hong Luan took the lead, guiding the way.

Xiao Ji had never witnessed a wedding among the people of Dongyi, and he had heard that their marriage customs were quite different from those of other regions; however, as they walked toward the hall prepared for the ceremony, he was surprised to find that the rumors were inaccurate.

The braziers, the saddles, the tiles. Wasn’t this exactly the same as the marriage customs of the State of Zhao?

He walked forward impatiently, not wanting to wait for the bride at all. The bride was pulled so hard she almost stumbled.

The bride glared at him from beneath the red veil, lifted her heavy skirts, and hopped over the saddle in one swift motion.

Next, she crossed the braziers without incident, her movements precise and controlled.

Then came the tiles. The bride lifted her foot high and brought it down with a force so tremendous that even Hong Luan, standing nearby, was startled by the sheer power she exerted.

All that effort just to step on a tile, surely there was no need to use such strength.

The tile shattered cleanly, and from beneath her veil, the bride exhaled a long breath, seemingly quite pleased with her own strength.

Xiao Ji frowned.

The couple entered the main hall, which was adorned with countless lengths of red silk.

The King of Dongyi along with the other princes and nobles were already seated inside.

Xiao Ji frowned again.

The old man was already here?

Where had Long Yi gone? Why hadn’t he made his move yet?

“First bow to heaven and earth!”

The master of ceremonies in the Holy Maiden Hall began to chant the ritual words.

Xiao Ji and the bride turned to face the open doors and bowed.

Xiao Ji only bowed halfway. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw the Holy Maiden bowing with full devotion.

“Second bow to the sacred ancestors!”

Since the Holy Maiden was the embodiment of a divine office and had long severed all ties with any parents she might have had in the mortal world, naturally there was no tradition of bowing to the elders of a family during her wedding ceremony; instead, the bride and groom were to bow before the statue of the very first ancestor of the Holy Maiden Hall.

Xiao Ji once again faced the statue together with the bride, yet this time he performed the bow even more perfunctorily than before, lowering his body only the slightest bit in a gesture that barely counted.

His half‑hearted actions drew visible displeasure from many of the guests, though none of them dared to voice their dissatisfaction in public.

Then came the final bow, the mutual bow between husband and wife.

Xiao Ji did not wish to perform it at all, yet he clearly saw the other party bow deeply toward him, lowering herself with complete sincerity and trust, as though she intended to entrust the entire rest of her life entirely into his hands.

His eyes flickered, and his heartbeat suddenly skipped.

“With this, the ceremony is complete!”

As soon as the master of ceremonies from the Holy Maiden Hall announced the completion of the wedding rites, a tall and powerful figure suddenly descended from the sky, arriving before the Dongyi King with the fierce momentum of a dragon’s roar and a crashing wave.

His movement was so swift and forceful that the guests saw nothing but an afterimage; by the time they reacted and attempted to rush forward to protect their king, Long Yi had already seized the Dongyi King by the throat in a deadly grip!

The instant Long Yi took the king hostage, Xiao Ji also grabbed hold of the bride in front of him, his arm tightening violently as a dagger slid from his sleeve into his palm.

Pressing the blade against the bride’s throat, he moved to stand beside Long Yi, the two of them positioned back‑to‑back, each guarding the other’s blind spots with tense vigilance.

The guests were thrown into panic, unable to comprehend how a wedding ceremony could be infiltrated by assassins.

The groom, after all, had been personally chosen by the Holy Maiden and escorted all the way by the king’s own elite guards.

Who could have imagined that he would turn out to be a traitor?

“Protect the king!”

One of the princes of Dongyi drew his sword and shouted angrily.

Long Yi simply kicked him straight back into his seat.

Xiao Ji let out a mocking laugh. “Dongyi King, it seems you have sat on your throne for far too long, and some people cannot hold themselves back any longer, hoping to take this chance to have you die at our hands.”

The Dongyi King was sixty this year and had ruled for thirty years, making him indeed the longest‑reigning monarch in the entire history of Dongyi Tribe.

Among the guests present were his own younger brother, his own sons, and his own nephews, and he would never believe that not a single one of them harbored ambitions toward the throne.

Now that he had fallen into the hands of assassins, it was entirely possible that these people, under the guise of rescuing him, would deliberately provoke the assassins so that, in a moment of anger, the assassins would accidentally kill him.

One had to admit that when it came to manipulating power and understanding human nature, Xiao Ji completely crushed many of the current dynasty’s civil officials.

The Dongyi King, already old and valuing his life all the more, did not dare gamble on whether his own methods were tougher than Xiao Ji’s; he forcibly suppressed his panic and fury, glanced sideways with the corner of his eye, and asked, “Who sent you?”

Even though Long Yi was the one physically holding him hostage, it was obvious that the one making the decisions was the groom who had spoken earlier.

Among the group were several military officers who had once crossed blades with Xiao Ji; however, because he was wearing a veil, they failed to recognize that he was in fact Marquis Xuanping, the man who had slain countless Dongyi warriors on the battlefield.

Xiao Ji smiled lightly and said, “Don’t bother asking who sent me. If you want to live, have someone prepare a carriage and bring Xiao En and Xiao Ze over safely. If either of them so much as loses a single strand of hair, I will chop off one of your fingers.”

“Xiao Ji?” The Dongyi King finally recognized his voice.

Xiao Ji openly admitted it, “Yes, it’s me. So you should understand very well what I am capable of. I truly might kill you.”

The Dongyi King had considered negotiating, but now he fully backed down.

Xiao Ji’s backing was powerful, and his methods were even more ruthless.

If he said he would kill, then he truly dared to kill, even if it meant mutual destruction.

The Dongyi King looked to his eldest son, “Do as he says!”

The eldest prince hesitated, “Father…”

Xiao Ji sneered, “Dongyi King, you truly raised a fine son.”

The king’s naturally suspicious heart was thrown into turmoil, and his gaze turned cold as he looked at his eldest son and said, “What? Do you intend to rebel? Or are you the same as your imperial uncle, secretly hoping I will die at the hands of a man from the State of Zhao, so that you can smoothly inherit the throne?”

The eldest prince’s expression changed. He had absolutely no such intention; he simply wanted to delay things long enough for someone to fetch poison that could knock these intruders unconscious.

His loyalty was as clear as the sun and the moon, but if his father refused to believe it, then his loyalty was worth nothing.

The second prince seized the chance to muddy the waters. “Father! Since elder brother refuses, this son will do it instead!”

Perfect, internal strife had begun.

Xiao Ji watched with delight.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
