The Incubus System Chapter 838. Be Their Strength

Miranda's PoV

Miranda turned to face Damian. His demeanor seemed softer.

Yet, despite his seemingly friendlier façade, an undercurrent of trepidation still lingered within her. Becoming his servant hadn't erased the fear she held in her heart. He was her master, the one with the power over her life.

"Nothing. I'm just amazed by this view," Miranda replied.

"Is it the view or because of your past?"

The question struck a nerve. It was as if he had seen through her, right down to the core of her being. Her breath hitched.

Her mind raced.

Should she spill the truth?

Finally, after a pause that felt like an eternity, she uttered in a quiet, uncertain voice, "Can I lie?"

Damian's response was immediate and unwavering. "No."

The silence between stretched. Miranda's eyes held an unspoken plea as she gazed into Damian's.

"Yes, I was thinking about the past," she admitted. Her eyes held a distant sadness. "They already live a prosperous life here, yet they still want to take over the human world and eat us," she said.

"You mean us?" Damian interjected. Though she once belonged to the human world, she was no longer a part of it. She was one of them now, a demon, a part of a realm she had never imagined belonging to.

A wry smile curved Miranda's lips. "Yeah, us," she admitted with a tinge of resignation.

Damian's gaze shifted to the cityscape, his thoughts seemingly adrift. He took a deep breath, as if marshaling his thoughts before he turned to her, his eyes locking onto hers.

"Let me ask you, Miranda. If the lions were wild, even if they were prosperous and got what they wanted, would that stop them from hunting their prey?"

She pondered his question about the wild lions.

"In the zoo, no," she finally replied, her voice tinged with a touch of uncertainty.

Damian's laughter resonated around them.

"Humans have interfered with most animals in the zoo. Most of them have never seen the wild or are used to living in cages, where humans feed them every day. Their instincts have usually become dull. I'm referring to the wild lions," he clarified.

A brief silence followed as Miranda digested his words, her thoughts drifting to the concept of the wild, to the untamed creatures living purely by their predatory instincts. "I think yes... After all, all predators are greedy," she admitted. RαꞐỗβĚᶊ

"Ah, now you know the answer," Damian said sagely. "In addition, for demons, humans are the best food. It was an A5 wagyu, the best caviar, the best sweet cake that would never be found in the demon world. Who could resist that?" His explanation was matter-of-fact.

She lowered her head, grappling with the bitter truth. "So we simply are their food…" Her voice trailed off.

"They are our food," Damian reiterated, his tone carrying an unyielding emphasis.

His statement wrapped around Miranda like a blanket.

She stood there, speechless, once again, the silence stretching between them.

"I know this is unfair. But the world is always unfair to the weak," Damian's voice resonated with a kind of grim wisdom. "While the strong sometimes like to abuse their power to bully the weak."

He reached out, his hand gently grasping her shoulder. "So—" Damian's voice was steady, his eyes holding a gentle assurance. "Be strong, Miranda."

She met Damian's gaze, finding an unexpected gentleness behind his piercing eyes. His words held a whisper of encouragement. They stirred something within her.

"If you feel the world is unfair, you can fight against it. If the weak need help, you can be their strength. You will fear nothing," Damian's words were a reassurance.

As Damian turned away, Miranda felt a newfound resolve stirring within her.

She stood there.

The notion of receiving such encouragement from a demon created a shift within her.

She turned once more to the window, the cityscape sprawling beneath her. Her gaze lingered on the city sprawl. Her clenched hands, this time, weren't a product of fear or frustration. Instead, they represented a newfound resolve.

'He is right… I have power now. Even though I can't change my situation, I can make a difference to others...'
