The Innkeeper

Chapter 2524: How amusing

Chapter 2524: How amusing

Lex did not immediately activate the Reboot token. Once he did that, he expected to be faced with a lot of simple and easy quests and he wanted to face them with 100% of his attention and focus, so he had to finish up everything else before that was done.

The list was not too long, but the key thing among them were the letters. Now that he felt no pressure about writing them, he had only two concerns when it came to them. The first was to ensure he didn’t accidentally compromise his identity.

The more he interacted with Dao Lords, the greater the chance of that happening. But he’d also gotten a lot of practice doing it now, so the chances of him making a mistake were lesser - at least in letters. In person, the advancement of his Primordial Dao Body had actually increased the chances of him being discovered rather than helping him keep the secret.

Based on what he had learned, it was not only normal, but it was actually expected that Dao Lords would be unable to control their power, and so would leak Dao radiation constantly. That was one of the reasons even their own descendants barely ever saw them, and the reason why they hardly ever interacted with immortals.

Logic dictated that it should be easy for them to just make immortal level clones to interact with others, but that did not seem to be a common practice so there was probably some reason behind that. Coming back to the matter at hand, one of the reasons why everyone was so intimidated by the existence of the Innkeeper was his perfect control over his power.

He never leaked Dao radiation, and not just that but he kept other Dao Lords who visited his Inn from leaking theirs as well. That was a key component in his lore - as Lex saw it.

He hadn’t thought of it back then, but he realized after becoming a Celestial that even now, he didn’t really have any control over his Dao Body. He had to keep his tenets sealed to prevent his Dao Intentions from influencing everything around him. Lex had only just barely learned how to channel Dao Intentions in a direction he wanted rather than stopping them entirely.

That was actually the most lethal thing about him, and the reason why ordinary Celestials could never hope to match him. He was literally not on their level anymore.

But when he pretended to be the Innkeeper, if he opened up his tenets and his Dao Intentions were leaked, other Dao Lords might notice it. Lex could not say for certain how that would influence their impression of the Innkeeper. After all, to go from perfect control to now leaking Dao Intentions seemed like a reversal in power rather than growth.

In short, he didn’t know what to expect, and he needed to be extra careful when meeting Dao Lords in person, but a letter should be no problem. With that in mind, he came to the second thing he needed to focus on when writing these letters: to get the most benefit and advantage from them possible!

Well, Lex couldn’t bring himself to scam - eh, no, to request anything from Eclipse, but he had no such moral compunctions when it came to the Henali.

’Respected Governor Hiran Kokan,

I write to you...’

’Honorable Queen Eclipse,

I hope this letter finds you well...’

Lex could not help but grin and chuckle as he wrote the letters, imagining their reactions when they read them. To be honest, his letter to Eclipse was quite tame. That governor, though, was quite the jumpy fellow. He behaved a little strange back at the Tea Party, but Lex hadn’t dared to pry into the details.

Either way, his major concern of spreading the news of the danger was taken care of. Now he just needed to send these letters out and then do a bit of house cleaning, and then it was time for a system reboot.

Lex scanned the entire Inn for all his new staff. He didn’t really have a personal relationship with them, so there was no time like the present to fix it.

While searching the Inn, Lex ran into a worker who defied all expectations of Inn workers! He was actually chubby, and even wore glasses! Lex had literally never encountered a cultivator who needed glasses before this, and so was surprised to find one working for himself.

A quick inspection revealed that the worker - who appeared to have the body of a 16 year old - had a special physique that kept all the effects of his cultivation suppressed until he became an immortal.

But without the strength granted by cultivation, how could one pass the tribulation? The kid clearly did not have an answer for that yet because his cultivation was only in the Golden Core. Good enough.

Lex sent word to one of his workers to send that chubby little worker to his office. A short while later, Lex heard a nervous knock which was amusing because he never knew that even knocks could appear nervous.

"Come in," said the Innkeeper, suppressing the amusement in his voice.

The door opened just a smidge, and a chubby teenager stuck his head through, as if to make sure that he really was the one who was summoned. Seeing that the Innkeeper hadn’t stopped him, he opened the door just a little more and squeezed his body through. For some reason, opening the door all the way made him even more nervous.

"You called for me, sir?" the worker asked nervously.

The Innkeeper smiled at him kindly, though there was a hint of amusement evident in that smile as well.

"Relax, child. Why are you so nervous?" he asked warmly.

The chubby worker felt his nervousness ease upon hearing that the Innkeeper didn’t sound angry.

"I... no reason. I just thought that... you might be mad that... the guests keep feeding me..."

Huh?

As an Immortal, Lex had perfect control over his body so he kept himself from uttering that out loud, but it could not be hidden that he hadn’t been expecting such a response. A swept his spirit sense over the worker once more, and finally figured out what was happening.

His physique, which otherwise suppressed his cultivation, needed some kind of defense mechanism to keep him alive so it maxed his proverbial charisma towards the opposite gender. In short, his appearance was the epitome of adorable, causing all women who saw him to trigger their maternal instincts to protect him. Though, since the Inn had no dangers, that transformed into wanting to feed him.

How... amusing.
