Chapter 4556: The Barrier Between Dimensions
Chapter 4556: The Barrier Between Dimensions
"So higher dimensions are conceived of as a way to satisfy the rule that probabilities need to add up to one," Rui muttered in thought. "And only by increasing the number of spatial dimensions to eleven or twenty-six or whatever satisfies this condition when using a string model of realities."
That was a fascinating reason to conclude that the universe had twenty-six dimensions. Though Rui could understand why a lot of people didn’t believe this. A purely mathematical rationale for a radically different cosmology was not the most convincing. Without empirical proof confirming the existence of such higher dimensions, even he wouldn’t believe it.
However, he had witnessed higher dimensions and had even leveraged them, albeit very crudely.
"That’s right," the professor replied patiently. "Higher dimensions are a prediction born from mathematical necessity and the necessity to satisfy the law that probabilities need to add up to a unity."
Rui nodded. "What’s the nature of these higher dimensions? Are they dimensions that you can walk through if you were to hypothetically access like our base three dimensions?"
"Theoretically, yes. But they’re not easy to access," the professor explained. "The extra dimensions of my theory are actually tightly locked away from our base three dimensions by an infinite number of quantum space-time structures known as Calabi-Yau manifolds."
The word manifolds there was what drew Rui’s attention the most. He had a lot of experience with manifolds. He knew just how extraordinary they were. He leaned forward, his expression growing more curious. "Are the Calabi-Yau manifolds the same kind of manifold as the Kandrian Manifold or the Greater Panamic Manifold?"
Perhaps he could understand more about the nature of the manifolds that were created by a lifeform of the laminar integument tree of life if he understood the Calabi-Yau manifold.
"They’re not exactly the same, but they are similar." The professor replied smoothly. "The Calabi-Yau manifolds hide higher dimensions from lower dimensions. But these macro manifolds that you speak of only hide pockets of three-dimensional space from the rest of the three-dimensional universe using the fourth spatial dimension. They’re a more primitive, if more wide-scale phenomenon of Calabi-Yau manifolds, which are naturally occurring."
That explanation made Rui’s eyes widen with amazement. He didn’t expect that the two manifolds had something in common. He had inquired simply because they were called the same thing, but to think that they were actually related.
"Could these macro manifolds be an attempt at recreating the Calabi-Yau manifold through technological means?" Rui wondered in an amazed tone.
"That is a popular hypothesis in the scientific community," the professor replied. "Whichever entity conceived of these macro manifolds had likely studied Calabi-Yau manifolds and attempted to engineer, on a macro scale, the geometry of these quantum higher-dimensional space-time manifolds." .
"Wow. I never expected that these manifolds had something to do with String Theory," Rui murmured with amazement. "The virus inherited the manifold technology from the laminar integuments. Which means..."
His expression grew complicated. "...the laminars are an even more advanced civilization than I ever gave them credit for."
It was no wonder that the laminars could bully civilizations that had Transcendents without having any themselves. They were so extraordinarily advanced scientifically that even Rui didn’t think he was a match for that civilization, even with his consciousness transfer loophole over the price of Transcendence.
It also made him more wary about the other advanced civilizations of the large star strands of the Milky Way. They were likely even more advanced than the arakai or any of the other civilizations of the Orion Star Strand.
Rui heaved a sigh, shaking his head. Humanity was way too far from this level, and it simply couldn’t be crossed in a short amount of time. The difference between civilizations that mastered hyperdimensional technology was likely the difference between a type-two and a type-one civilization. It was vast. Even with the dwarves and the tekvores, he had no anticipation to think that they could cross that chasm in the short-term. It would probably take at least a century, if not longer, for them to catch up.
"If Your Majesty is interested in unlocking higher dimensions, then you will have to figure out a way to detect and unfold the Calabi-Yau manifolds," the professor said, drawing his attention, continuing the conversation. "We have not been able to identify the manifolds, for our technology is not adequate. However, your insights into the universe are greater than any instrument of our creation can provide. Perhaps it is within your capability to identify the Calabi-Yau manifolds and even unlock them with your power. Doing so would allow you to access the higher dimensions of our universe."
"How do you propose I do that?" Rui raised an eyebrow. "Is the Calabi-Yau manifold something fundamental to reality, or are they like bubbles that can be popped?"
The professor shook his head. "That, I cannot say. Unfortunately, a theory that is entirely built atop a mathematical foundation can’t deduce the nature of what it predicts. You will have to discover the nature of these manifolds yourself. All I can share is the traits predicted by the mathematics and the theory, as well as my intuitions on what might be the case."
Rui listened intently as the professor shared his knowledge with him without holding anything back. He could sense that the professor wanted him to succeed, for it would help with his research as well, so he was particularly passionate about sharing everything he understood about the cosmology predicted by his theory.
The more he listened, the more of an intuitive understanding of the theory he gained. By the end, he even felt inspired. As if he had inherited a part of the passion that the professor had for the topic.
"Your insights have been enlightening, Professor. I am grateful for how forthcoming you have been in sharing your insights." Rui stood up, making the professor follow suit. "I intend to begin experimenting with String Theory. I intend to access the higher dimensions. I will come back frequently; I hope you will be willing to entertain my ideas and thoughts, and share your knowledge wherever you deem fit."
The professor nodded with a pleased expression. "I will do my very best, Your Majesty."
Rui nodded with a smile before teleporting away.
