Chapter 1652 - 1645: Chu Xi Doesn’t Go Far from the Door
Chapter 1652 -1645: Chu Xi Doesn’t Go Far from the Door
“What’s going on?” Su Hao asked in some confusion. He had always focused on training troops and assisting Chu Heng, without paying much attention to the inner courtyard affairs of Jiang Du City. Now, he had no choice but to ask Wu Jinyan.
“The Eighth Prince is fickle, everyone is used to it by now. As for Zuo Qingqing and his business, we neither know nor is it appropriate for us to ask. But now, Princess Xi is staying in our home, and Madam of the Left Grand Tutor has made quite a few remarks about it. A few days ago, I brought Bao Jun to visit Mrs. Liang and even heard her share some idle gossip.”
Wu Jinyan, being broad-minded and tolerant by nature, and now the madam of the Marquis’s Manor overseeing the inner courtyard, naturally carried herself with even greater poise.
But she couldn’t stand how the madam of the Left Grand Tutor disparaged Rong Sheng—that much she could overlook—but even a little child like Princess Xi wasn’t spared from her comments.
As a mother herself, if it were her Bao Jun being criticized like that, she would have felt deeply pained!
Su Hao’s handsome brows furrowed slightly, “This matter is not related to us, but now that Princess Xi is staying in the manor, it is a responsibility. I will report to the emperor and the Ninth Prince when I enter the palace.”
“Besides, now that Yingxue is absent and Heng’er has entrusted Princess Xi to us, we must protect her well. Tell Chenyang to pay extra attention to Princess Xi.”
Wu Jinyan covered her mouth and chuckled softly, “Would we ever need you to say that? Do you doubt that your son, once he’s done with his lessons, will already be off to find the flowers he’s planning to gift Princess Xi tomorrow?”
Upon hearing this, Su Hao merely smiled.
While they were chatting away, Su Bao Jun woke up and started babbling.
Wu Jinyan was about to pick her up to change her diaper when Su Hao reached over for the diaper himself. “Let me do it. You’ve been busy with household matters and tired all day.”
Wu Jinyan instantly felt a warm glow in her heart.
Even though Su Hao had been occupied with court affairs, hadn’t he also been exhausted the entire day?
Yet he was still so gentle and considerate, never believing the matters of the home and the upbringing of children were solely his wife’s responsibility. Su Chenyang and Su Bao Jun were being raised by both of them together.
At first, she had been worried—how would Su Hao, a towering great general and a man of seven feet, ever manage something like changing his daughter’s diapers?
But Su Hao had patiently learned and now did it more meticulously than she did.
Sometimes Su Hao would play with Su Bao Jun at home, and the child had grown even more attached to him!
Watching Su Hao bathe Su Bao Jun, Wu Jinyan went away to attend to some house matters. When she returned, she personally prepared bathwater for Su Hao.
The couple’s relationship was loving and harmonious.
Night fell in the imperial palace.
After assuming regency, Chu Heng chose to stay in Chu Yihan’s Yangxin Hall to facilitate learning and attending court, as it held traces of his father and mother’s presence. When he missed them, he could reminisce about them.
But tonight, as he lay in bed, he heard the crisp voice of that little girl again.
“Chu Heng, you’re thinking about your mother again!”
Little Ginseng appeared in Chu Heng’s mind, giggling as she spoke.
Chu Heng stared at her, very curious. “You’re here again! I’ve already seen you so many times—how can you magically appear inside my body?”
“Because my host is your mother! When you were still in her belly, I saw you!” Little Ginseng’s voice rang clear as a bell, accompanied by delightful laughter.
“No wonder I could hear voices before, but now I can actually see you! Did you live in my mother’s body?” Chu Heng chatted happily with her.
Little Ginseng nodded vigorously. “I’m now traveling with your mother and father to Lingnan. It’s really far; rushing all day is so exhausting for me as ginseng!”
“How are my father and mother?” Chu Heng asked hurriedly, concerned.
“They’re doing well! They were just escorting others. They’re blessed and safe, and with me—the ginseng—to protect them, there’s nothing to worry about! What’s happening over there? Anything fun? Tell me quickly!”
With her plump pink cheeks in her hands, her eyes wide open, Little Ginseng was full of curiosity.
Chu Heng thought carefully. “I’ve been acting as regent for a while now, and the affairs of court aren’t particularly fun. If there’s anything, it would be about my uncle. I’ve heard he’s coming back soon, and I’m a bit distressed.”
“Chu Yifeng? What are you afraid of?” Little Ginseng snorted coldly, clearly unimpressed.
“My uncle is unpredictable, cruel, and bloodthirsty. Once, he almost threw me out. Thinking about it now still makes me helpless.”
Born to the same mother, how could his emperor father have been so wise and dedicated to the nation, while his uncle was so chaotic?
He wasn’t like an elder uncle at all!
He was more like a younger brother!
“Nothing to fear! If he tries to throw you again, I’ll use my spiritual power to protect you. This little ginseng is already training into a small human form. Just wait till I practice some more!”
Little Ginseng imagined the day she could transform fully into a person.
She could finally play with Chu Heng!
That little boy was proving to be far more interesting than his mother!
“Alright! I’ll wait for you…” Chu Heng wanted to say that once she took on human form, they could venture to Yujing Mountain together to play. But when he opened his eyes, his mind turned blank entirely.
There was nothing there!
“Sigh.” Chu Heng sighed softly; perhaps Little Ginseng’s powers still weren’t fully matured.
“Roar—”
Beneath his bed, Shan Bao stared at him with its big round tiger eyes, as if to ask: Aren’t you going to sleep?
Chu Heng moved to the edge of the bed and hugged its big head, gently kissing it. “Good boy. I missed you. Let’s sleep together!”
“Aw!”
Shan Bao let out a low growl, signaling Chu Heng to move over. It jumped onto the bed and cuddled up with Chu Heng to sleep.
The man and the tiger continued their tender companionship.
Su Chenyang had the day off today and didn’t have to go to Guozijian. He went to ask his mother if he could take Chu Xi out to play.
Wu Jinyan thought it would be good to let Chu Xi out for some air too, lest she feel unhappy staying at the Marquis’s Manor. However, she instructed Su Chenyang to seek Chu Xi’s opinion—he had to get her consent first.
Su Chenyang arrived at Chu Xi’s courtyard and asked if she wanted to go out.
Chu Xi actually didn’t feel like going out; she was waiting for Daddy to take her out instead.
But she understood that Su Chenyang just wanted to cheer her up by suggesting this outing.
Standing before Su Chenyang, she lightly nodded her head. “Okay.”
Su Chenyang’s lips curved into a gentle smile. His handsome and clean-cut features radiated the warm glow of spring sunshine, bringing comfort to others. “Do not worry, Princess. Chenyang will protect you and ensure you have a wonderful time.”
With that, he bowed slightly and turned to report back to Wu Jinyan.
Wu Jinyan, thinking of the blooming spring and the peach garden outside the city, decided it would be a perfect spot for an outing. She invited Su Han to bring along her children and planned to take her own three children, joining them for the trip—let the children play together and enjoy each other’s company.
With more children around, Chu Xi might also relax and have fun.
Su Han brought her two children and quickly arrived at the Marquis’s Manor gates.
She lifted the carriage curtain, her beauty as delicate as peach blossoms, and greeted with a gentle smile.
“I’ve also been thinking about taking the children out for some fun. How perfect that you came to invite me.”
From her lap, two heads—one large and one small—popped out. They belonged to the children she and Song Chengyi had adopted. The older boy was named Song Qianlin; he was only half a year younger than Su Hao, with a calmer personality. He peeked out and greeted Wu Jinyan, “Hello, Aunt.”
