Chapter 1139: An Enraged Mairon
Chapter 1139: An Enraged Mairon
(Planet Drexel, Mairon’s POV)
After gaining his first true experience of war, Mairon realized that he enjoyed it far more than he originally expected, as the thrill of battle lingered within him long after the fighting had already ended.
The sensation refused to leave his mind.
The rush of charging into danger.
The pressure of life and death.
The satisfaction of overcoming an enemy stronger than expected.
All of it replayed endlessly within his thoughts, as though his body itself had already begun craving the battlefield again despite only recently stepping onto one for the first time.
"Man... I can’t wait for the next war to begin already..." Mairon muttered, as he leaned back lazily in his chair while staring toward the ceiling of his temporary quarters.
"I wonder when father will let us fight another campaign..." he continued, before letting out a disappointed sigh while tapping his fingers restlessly against the armrest.
"Probably not for a few months at least..." he grumbled.
"So what the hell am I even supposed to do until then?"
*Knock* *Knock*
A sharp knock suddenly interrupted his thoughts, as Mairon straightened slightly before speaking toward the door.
"Come in."
The door opened shortly after, as one of the Captains serving under his command stepped inside with a pale expression and visible injuries across his forehead and jaw.
The moment Mairon saw the condition he was in, his relaxed demeanor vanished instantly.
"What happened?" Mairon asked, his brows furrowing sharply while his tone turned cold.
The Captain lowered his gaze slightly before beginning his report.
"Lieutenant... while patrolling the eastern district today, my unit was ambushed by local residents," the Captain explained, as restrained anger flickered within his voice.
"They pelted our vehicles with stones first before deploying barricades across both ends of the street, trapping us between multiple apartment complexes," he continued, while Mairon’s expression darkened further with every word.
"Once we were boxed in, they attacked from all sides simultaneously using acid vials, Molotov cocktails, and improvised explosives thrown from elevated positions."
The Captain clenched his fists tightly.
"Thankfully, my men managed to fight our way out before the situation completely collapsed, however fourteen soldiers suffered severe injuries during the retreat..."
His voice lowered slightly afterward.
"And one of my men was killed."
Silence followed those words.
A dangerous silence.
"However," the Captain added carefully, "we managed to eliminate some attackers during our escape before the rest scattered once they realized the blockade had failed."
"But unfortunately they scattered straight into other residential blocks, and so far none of the locals seem keen on handing them over.
I tried to sniff them out.
However, with the whole Drexel population covering for them as though they’re local heroes, it’s hard to know exactly where they fled.
So as of now, I’m afraid we have no reliable method of identifying exactly where they fled."
The atmosphere inside the room shifted completely after that explanation.
*Clench*
Mairon’s fists tightened violently, as fury surged across his face while killing intent leaked from his body without restraint.
"Fucking righteous faction cowards...!" Mairon snarled.
"They attack from hiding, throw explosives from rooftops, kill one of my men, and then run like rats the moment real fighters push back?"
He stood abruptly from his chair.
"Take me there immediately," Mairon ordered, his voice carrying violent intent.
"I’ll slaughter every single one of them myself if I have to."
The Captain’s eyes widened slightly at that response.
"Lieutenant... that is the problem," he explained cautiously.
"The attackers are no longer occupying the same residential blocks where the ambush happened, and after dispersing into the city, they became almost impossible to isolate individually.
Even if I take you there, you will find nothing but broken windows and ransacked apartment buildings.
The culprits are already gone."
He hesitated briefly before continuing.
"If we pursue them aggressively now, we would have to search through massive civilian populations district by district...
And with how much they seem to be covering for them, it seems like gaining any useful information will be impossible unless we torture it out of them."
Mairon gritted his teeth harder listening to that explanation.
"So what?" he snapped immediately.
"You want me to sit quietly after one of my men got butchered?"
His breathing grew heavier.
"Those bastards wanted to rebel, didn’t they? They wanted a fight?"
"Fine."
"I’ll give them A FIGHT!"
The Captain remained silent after hearing that, as he clearly understood that Mairon’s anger had already crossed the point where logic alone would calm him down.
Regardless, he tried to stop him from making a reckless decision.
"Lieutenant.... Please escalate this to the Commander.
Just like you, I don’t mind going to war with these rebels.
However, I— I don’t want to risk being court martialed for it."
The captain requested, as Mairon let out a deep sigh.
*Sigh*
"Alright..." Mairon muttered at last, forcing himself to steady his breathing slightly.
"I’ll speak with Commander Micky James first."
His eyes narrowed dangerously afterward.
"And if he understands our anger and approves the offensive, good."
"But if he refuses..." Mairon said, his voice lowering into something far colder.
"...then I genuinely do not care anymore. I’ll go punish the rebels alone.
To hell with being court martialed..."
A dangerous smile spread slowly across his face.
"If one of my soldiers died here, then I’ll burn this entire damn city down if that’s what it takes to avenge him."
With that, Mairon stormed out of the room immediately, his cloak whipping violently behind him as he headed straight toward Commander Micky James’ command center.
Behind him, the injured Captain watched Mairon leave with a conflicted expression, as although the Lieutenant’s rage terrified him slightly, a part of him also understood it completely.
Because after witnessing one of their own die burned alive inside a patrol vehicle, even he no longer wanted to treat the locals as respectable citizens.
While somewhere deep within the endless cityscape of Drexel, hidden behind apartment walls and cheering civilians, the rebels celebrating today’s ambush had absolutely no idea that they had just provoked the one guy they shouldn’t have.
As when Mairon came for his revenge.
He wasn’t just going to come for them individually.
But the city as a whole.
