Chapter 490: Chapter 483: Am I Being Paranoid?
"Big brother, there sure are a lot of kids here today, we’re gonna make a fortune!" a skinny man in his thirties said to a chubby man in his forties who appeared to be the leader.
The chubby man was also quite happy. He smoked his cigarette down to the butt, stamped it out under his foot, and said to the skinny man, "This time, the Ji Family really did us a solid. Without their intel, we wouldn’t have known about such a good spot in the county town. We should cut them in for more of the profits."
The skinny man was somewhat disgruntled, "Why should we give them more money? It’s us who are putting in the effort and taking the risks!"
The chubby man glanced at him. It was only a light glance, but the skinny man was so frightened that he immediately shuddered and didn’t dare say another word, afraid he’d upset the chubby man.
The chubby man was quite pleased with his subordinate’s reaction. He beckoned, and a few other men and women gathered around. He said softly, "The heat is on now, everyone needs to stay sharp, don’t screw up and end up in jail."
Everyone nodded understandingly and patted their chests, assuring him that there wouldn’t be a problem.
"Big brother, relax. We’re hitting a big score today. We’ll definitely live it up."
The words from another man brought smiles to everyone’s faces, including the chubby man, who, pleased by his subordinate’s optimistic talk, gave them a rare smile.
Soon after, the dozen or so people disguised themselves. They all looked like simple, honest folks—some as couples, some as lovers, and others as farmers who had just come into town. These people silently blended into the crowd at the park and quickly vanished.
Du Du and the chubby Niu Niu were having a great time, their strollers parked side by side, the kids touching each other and bursting into giggles now and then.
"Look how buddy-buddy these two little ones are. My Niu Niu has never been this happy before! Ah, it’s no surprise though, with each family only having one child—no playmates, always stuck with us old folks—no wonder they’re not happy!" Mrs. Wu sighed.
Sisi and Su Ping just smiled without saying much, as their status was sensitive and it wasn’t appropriate for them to comment on policies. Fortunately, Mrs. Wu was a smart lady, aware of their concerns, and quickly changed the subject to something else.
"Oh my, Aunt, your two babies are so adorable, like the golden boy and jade girl from in front of The Bodhisattva Guanyin—you sure have a pair to be proud of!"
Suddenly, a woman about thirty years old, with an honest face, came over to join them, though no one knew where she had come from.
Sisi instantly became vigilant. However, seeing that both Mrs. Wu and Su Ping didn’t take it seriously, she didn’t make it obvious and just casually answered a few questions from the middle-aged woman.
The woman said she was from the countryside, came to the hospital for infertility treatment. She had been married for ten years without having children. Her in-laws wanted her husband to divorce her, but fortunately, he had a good conscience and insisted on not divorcing her and even earned money for her treatment.
As she spoke, tears began streaming down the middle-aged woman’s face, eliciting pity from Mrs. Wu and Su Ping for the poor woman.
But Sisi felt something was off. Despite the woman’s sincere tears and local dialect with a strong rural accent, she felt an air of fakeness about her—similar to the discomfort she felt when she had seen Liu Chunsheng before.
Sisi was on high alert, occasionally asking questions. The woman’s answers, however, couldn’t have been more fitting.
Could it be that her intuition was wrong?
Sisi began to doubt herself, wondering if she was being overly suspicious. At that moment, the middle-aged woman said, "Auntie, young lady, may I hold your child? I hope their good fortune rubs off on me, and maybe I’ll have a child next year!"
The woman’s eyes were filled with pleading that made it hard to refuse. Without any hesitation, Mrs. Wu agreed, and after a moment of contemplation, Sisi gave a slight nod, curious about what the woman intended to do.
"Thank you, Auntie, young lady, you are both good-hearted!"
The woman was tearfully grateful, and she reached out to pick up Du Du first. Everyone could understand her action – naturally, everyone would prefer to have a boy. Mrs. Wu, however, wasn’t too pleased; in her eyes, her great-granddaughter was the cutest child of all. But she had excellent composure and, even displeased, it didn’t show on her face.
However, little Du Du didn’t give the woman any face; he stopped smiling, waving his hands and even landing a few punches on the woman. Although only three months old, he was surprisingly strong, enough to cause the woman real pain. Internally cursing, she still managed to smile and said, "Oh, this child is really strong!"
The woman, still not giving up, wanted to hold Du Du again. Sisi would not let her son be uncomfortable and intervened: "My child doesn’t really like being held by strangers. If he gets upset, he might make a big fuss."
How could the woman give up on Du Du so easily? Their trip was specifically for this boy, wasn’t it?
Besides, such a handsome, sturdy boy was the easiest to find a buyer for. One of him was worth three or four other children, definitely fetching a good sum of money!
Though still reluctant, the woman let go to avoid arousing Sisi’s suspicions, planning to find another way later on.
Niu Niu, on the other hand, was easy to fool and soon became lively in the woman’s arms. The middle-aged woman seemed to have a knack for handling children, making Niu Niu very happy.
Mrs. Wu was surprised and said, "Big sister, you seem very experienced with children. You don’t seem like someone who has never had children."
The middle-aged woman was startled but kept her composure, putting on a sad expression and said, "Alas, I am the eldest of six siblings in my family, and I raised the five younger ones. Plus, I’ve taken care of my husband’s siblings’ children too. I never had children of my own, but caring for others’ kids makes my heart feel at ease!"
Soon, Mrs. Wu and Su Ping were moved by the woman’s story, their eyes reddening, and they consoled her a few times, saying that she would definitely achieve her heart’s desire and have a healthy, plump child next year.
"That would really be thanks to your kind blessings!" said the middle-aged woman joyfully.
They had been out for an hour now. Sisi stood up to say goodbye to Mrs. Wu, ready to go home. Mrs. Wu was also leaving, and they agreed to meet again at the park the next day.
The middle-aged woman was still holding Niu Niu and said she was going to catch the bus at the front, which happened to be on Mrs. Wu’s way. Sisi looked at the middle-aged woman uneasily, but seeing how Mrs. Wu was chatting with her happily, she could find nothing amiss.
Perhaps she was really just being overly cautious!
Sisi chuckled to herself, and said to Du Du in the stroller: "Du Du, let’s go home!"
Du Du cheerfully babbled in response, as if he understood Sisi’s words, bouncing around joyfully!
Just then, all of a sudden, someone screamed, "Where’s my grandson? Where has my grandson gone? My grandson is missing!"
