Chapter 752 - 745: Crossing Mountains and Rivers
Chapter 752: Chapter 745: Crossing Mountains and Rivers
A small town in M City, Y Province
Sisi got off the sardine can-like minibus, followed by Zhang Jie and Shangguan. The three of them were traveling light, each with just a large backpack.
"Finally, we got off the bus. The smell in there almost knocked me out. Sisi, you have no idea, the man in front of me had a smell that was simply overwhelming, and the lady next to me was holding two little piglets that kept farting! Ugh!" Zhang Jie took several deep breaths to recover.
Shangguan remained expressionless, looking calm and composed, as if she had just been sitting in Yang Shu’s luxury car.
Sisi wasn’t feeling great either. She pulled out some peppermint water and sprayed it a few times on Zhang Jie and Shangguan, then on herself, finally allowing them to breathe easily.
"Sisi, where are we heading next?" Zhang Jie asked.
"Let’s find a guide first. Brother Guang said without a guide, we’d never find our way." Sisi replied.
Zhang Jie rolled her eyes; she always made this face whenever she heard Huang Xiaoguang’s name.
Finding a guide was easy. They only had to mention it to the owner of the town’s only small restaurant, and the voluptuous and charming owner immediately called out to her eldest son, who was slaughtering sheep out back.
"Ladies, this is my son Gui. He goes up the mountains often to collect things and knows the trails well."
Gui was a 15 or 16-year-old boy, skinny and small, with dark skin and an ordinary appearance. His eyes were lively and intelligent, evidence of a clever boy, but one couldn’t be sure if he was well-behaved.
Actually, it’s best to look for an honest and simple guide. Someone like Gui, who was too active, wasn’t quite ideal. But since the owner had spoken, they could only accept it. Operating the town’s only restaurant, she wasn’t someone to mess with over such a small matter.
"Alright then, we’ll trouble Gui. Here’s a one hundred yuan deposit. We’ll pay the remaining one hundred yuan upon reaching the destination."
Sisi took out a Grandpa Mao, and the owner’s eyes lit up as she reached out for the money, smiling delightedly: "Don’t worry, ladies. With Gui leading the way, you’ll definitely not get lost."
Just as the owner’s hand touched the money, Sisi pulled her hand back, smiling slyly: "Let’s get one thing straight first, if Gui leads us the wrong way or tries any tricks, don’t blame us for not playing nice, okay?"
As soon as Sisi finished speaking, Shangguan delivered a precise chop that turned the greasy square table into a pentagonal one. The exposed wood at the broken corner glistened with sharp splinters, as she coldly stared at the owner and Gui.
"Uh!"
The owner couldn’t help but burp loudly, her sneaky thoughts straightened out by Shangguan’s chop, as were those of her son Gui and the other unruly guests in the restaurant.
Indeed, no matter when or where, physical power is always the strongest bargaining chip in negotiations.
Sisi handed the money back to the owner, finally restoring her smile.
After lunch, they set off. According to Gui, the village Sisi and the others were heading to was a day’s journey from the town. The roads weren’t developed, vehicles couldn’t enter, so it was all on foot.
The owner advised them to rest for a night in the restaurant before heading into the mountains, but Sisi declined. She hadn’t missed the greedy looks on the faces of the people in the restaurant earlier.
Three beautiful, wealthy female backpackers, even though Shangguan had demonstrated the Mountain Splitting and Tiger Shaking technique, it wouldn’t deter everyone. To avoid trouble, it was better to head into the mountains immediately; it was relatively quieter up there.
Shangguan and Zhang Jie shared the same thought. They would rather face the poisonous insects and beasts in the mountains than deal with these annoying people.
Huang Xiaoguang wasn’t wrong; the road to that village was indeed difficult. It was narrow and steep, a path formed by repeated footsteps. That could be tolerated, but the real obstacle was not only having to travel by land but also by water.
Faced with the wide, turbulent river and the somewhat aged iron chain over it, Sisi was truly speechless.
Are all the people in that village martial arts experts?
Do they have to fly over the roofs and the walls just to buy a packet of salt in town?
"Cross this river, and after climbing over a mountain, we’ll reach brigade one. There are about a dozen villages there. Which village are you heading to, Sisi?"
Gui’s Mandarin wasn’t very good, heavily accented, making it difficult to understand. But even so, Gui spoke the most standard Mandarin, as many locals couldn’t speak or understand it at all.
Sisi suddenly realized something. Huang Xiaoguang had mentioned that the greatest difficulty during filming wasn’t the harsh conditions, but the inability to communicate with the locals. What they said was incomprehensible, and what you said they didn’t understand, making it even harder than speaking with foreigners. Eventually, they had to get a young man from outside as a translator, and only then was the matter settled.
Sisi glanced at Gui, who was just about to step onto the iron chain. Though this boy was slick, he was fairly decent, and he was familiar with the place, making him a perfect translator.
"Gui, you can communicate with the people in the village, right?" Sisi asked.
"No problem, I speak all the local dialects, even those from the deepest Pan She Village, which my mom doesn’t even know!" Gui said, thumping his chest and boasting proudly.
Sisi smiled. It was good that he could speak; she’d been wondering where to find a translator!
"That’s great. I’ll hire you as our translator for fifty yuan a day, how does that sound?"
Gui’s eyes lit up, and he agreed without hesitation. But then he sheepishly said, "Could you tell my mom it’s only forty yuan a day when you head back?"
Clearly, the boy wanted to save up some private money. Zhang Jie couldn’t help but tease, "Gui, what do you plan to do with your stash? Buy flowers for the girls?"
Gui’s skin was thick; he quickly returned to normal, nodding confidently, "Yes, I’m sixteen and still haven’t had a girlfriend. My friends were with their beloved by fifteen. It’s embarrassing!"
Lost virginity at fifteen?
Are they even fully developed down there?
Sisi and her friends were amazed; the locals indeed had a wild spirit!
Of course, Sisi wouldn’t refuse such a small request. Initially, she was a bit worried about the owner fretting if they didn’t return for several days, but Gui seemed unconcerned.
"It doesn’t matter. I’ve often gone out for days without returning. My mom got used to it a long time ago, and with me earning this much money, she’d be too thrilled to care!"
Such a laid-back mom!
After sliding across the iron chain, the four of them spent a night on the mountain, waded through countless small rivers, and trudged through dense forests, finally arriving at the outermost Jianding Village.
It was the place where Huang Xiaoguang had filmed years ago.
