Chapter 286: Winter Disaster ( 9 )
Yao Zhi didn’t treat any of her people differently. Those who needed to work still worked. She gave each of them a big basin and said, "Wait here."
After saying that, she went to her room and took out 20 earthen jars filled with milk from the warehouse of her system’s animal farm.
Each earthen jar contained 50 liters of milk. She thought of calling Shiliu and Shiqi to help her. But when she tried to lift one of the jars, she was surprised to discover that she was actually able to carry it without a problem.
"Have I developed superhuman strength?"
Just after she finished her words, she heard a mechanical voice echo in her mind.
"Host, if you can’t even lift this small jar after consuming so much spiritual spring water, then I have to request an inspection to see if you are contracted with a strange disease."
When Yao Zhi heard her system’s words, she glared and said, "What kind of system are you, cursing at your host?"
The system only gave out a flat, dismissive snort before it continued to play dead.
Ignoring her system’s sarcastic remark, she carried the jar to the kitchen and said, "Ah Jiu, Ah Shi, there is milk in my room. When we use up this jar, you can fetch them later."
They exchanged glances when they heard her words. They didn’t know when she transported the milk over since they were sure that she brought nothing with her when she arrived with Ling Shi’er.
Not knowing about their suspicions, Yao Zhi said, "Before we can use this milk to make steamed buns, we have to heat it up first."
After she said this, she lit up another stove and boiled the milk in the pot. While the milk was boiling, she asked Shiliu and Shiqi to carry the flour over.
She poured 2 kilograms of flour, equivalent to 8 recipes, into each basin. Afterward, she slowly added 1.2 liters of warm milk. "Use chopsticks to stir the dough until it forms a rough dough."
After she added milk, she added 8 tablespoons of vegetable oil for a better texture. When the rough dough formed, she covered the kitchen table with some flour and said, "Now, it’s time to knead the dough."
Ling Jiu and Ling Shi nodded and poured the dough onto the table. Both of them kneaded vigorously. Perhaps they had warmer hands and more strength; it only took them 5 minutes to knead the dough until it was smooth and pliable.
"Okay, that’s enough. Now, we will cover the dough with a wet fabric and let it rest for 15 minutes."
While they waited, Ling Jiu and Ling Shi started kneading new dough, while Yao Zhi went to check the porridge.
Seeing that the consistency was right, she said, "Add some sugar to it, then it’s ready."
Xi Yi felt heartache when she saw how generous her Master was when adding the sugar.
Although she was a Marquis’ wife before, after experiencing the hardships of becoming a slave, she couldn’t bring herself to be as generous as before.
After the porridge was ready, Yao Zhi asked, "Are the stalls ready outside?"
"Master, I will go check," Ling Shiqi said.
"Okay."
Yao Zhi didn’t waste time. When the 15-minute time limit had passed, she taught Ling Jiu and Ling Shi how to shape the dough. To save time, she told them to shape them into round dough.
Afterward, she put a wet cloth on the bamboo steamer before she put the dough on it. The steamer was a five-layer steamer and could steam a total of 100 buns at once.
"Since the size is small, we only need to steam them over boiling water for 10 minutes."
As she said this, Ling Shiliu had already lit up another stove and filled the massive iron wok with water. When the water boiled, they placed the bamboo steamers on it.
"When it is done, wait for 2 to 3 minutes before opening the lid to prevent the buns from shrinking." She turned to Ling Jiu and Ling Shi and asked, "Is there any question?"
"No, Master," they shook their heads.
"Good. Then, for the next few days, both of you will be responsible for making the steamed buns. If you need help, ask your brothers. Teach them how to make them and take turns to rest. Don’t force yourselves."
"Understood."
Not long after, Ling Shiqi returned and said, "Master, the stalls are ready."
Yao Zhi nodded and said, "Help me take the porridge outside."
"Yes," Ling Shiqi nodded and called his brothers over.
The iron pot was very big, and they needed two people to carry it. They poured the porridge into wooden buckets and carried them out. Afterwards, Xi Yi and Ling Shiyi cleaned the pot and cooked another pot of porridge.
With them learning quickly, Yao Zhi no longer needed to stay in the kitchen to supervise them. She went to the storefront and observed the situation outside.
At first, no one came over and just watched from a distance. But when Ling Shiqi carried several baskets of white steamed buns out, the beggars could no longer hold back.
They rushed over to snatch the food but were blocked by Ling Yi and his brothers.
He stared at the crowd and said, "If you want to eat, line up properly. Everyone will have a share. If you continue to snatch the food, don’t blame me for being ruthless!"
When they heard his words and met his cold gaze, the beggars no longer dared to force their way.
Ling Yi didn’t prepare many bowls, so he and Ling Er scooped a ladle of porridge into the beggars’ bowls directly. Standing beside them, Ling San and Ling Si handed a steamed bun to each beggar.
Although it was only a bowl of porridge and a piece of steamed bun, the porridge was thick and sweet, while the steamed bun was dense and chewy. They could even smell the milky fragrance from the steamed bun.
The amount of food was enough to fill them up. Everyone eats with relish and savor it slowly.
