Chapter 308: Return Home
Chapter 308: Return Home
To prepare enough food for so many people, it took Yao Zhi, Xi Yi, and Xi Si several hours of cooking. When the food was ready, it was already 11:25 in the morning.
Yao Zhi separated some food enough for them and Xi Qi before they carried all the food to the area behind the kitchen.
The steamed buns were placed inside 2 big bamboo baskets and covered with a clean cloth. The soup was contained inside 2 big pots. As for the stir-fry cabbage, it was put inside 2 big earthen jars.
Just after they finished carrying the food over, they saw the workers and the villagers walk over. Walking in the front were Ling Yi and his brothers.
Seeing the food was ready, they quickly walked over to help distribute the food. The villagers brought their own bowls and bamboo tubes for water.
"Everyone will get 2 steamed buns, a bowl of soup, and half a ladle of stir-fry vegetables. You can get as much water as you want."
When they heard Yao Zhi’s words, the workers thought that the food prepared by her would be the same as what they received when they worked in the town.
So, when they saw that the steamed bun was as big as their fist, and there was a layer of oil floating on the surface of the soup, they were surprised. Not only that, but the stir-fry vegetables smelled amazing and were so fresh.
Seeing the food, they couldn’t help but salivate.
Noticing their eagerness, Ling Yi and his brothers quickly distributed the food. Since they could handle the situation, Yao Zhi returned to the kitchen with Xi Yi and Xi Si.
It was already noon, and they were hungry. So, they just ate in the kitchen. Xi Qi was still sleeping, so they left a portion for him and finished the rest of the food.
After lunch, everyone regained their energy and continued working diligently.
As the sun set on the horizon, Yao Zhi handed a pouch to Yang Dalang and said, "Brother Dalang, here is 500 taels of silver for the workers’ daily wages. I have to trouble you with this matter."
Yang Dalang smiled as he accepted the pouch. He thought that his position as the manager would be given to Ling Yi since he had more authority than he did. Unexpectedly, Yao Zhi still trusted him.
"Sister Yao, don’t worry, I will do it as usual," he said and patted his chest.
"With you handling this matter, I feel at ease," Yao Zhi nodded.
Now that she had handed the salaries to Yang Dalang, she only needed to prepare lunch for the workers. After she settled the matter, she returned home and took a long bath.
When she finished, dinner was ready. Everyone was tired today, so after the simple dinner, they returned to their rooms and went to sleep.
Another tiring day had passed in the blink of an eye.
Ten days later, Yao Zhi and her people were busy working as usual when someone entered the yard. When he saw the empty yards, Fu Chen’an was taken aback.
The last time he returned home, the vegetable gardens were thriving. But when he returned this time, the plots were there, but they were empty.
As he walked to the backyard, he called out, "Wife, I’m home."
Yao Zhi, who was wrapping steamed buns in the kitchen, was stunned when she heard her husband’s voice. She stood there unmoving, thinking that she had heard wrong.
It was not until she heard her husband calling again that she dashed out from the kitchen. The moment she saw him walking over, her eyes reddened.
She thought that she didn’t miss him or worry about him. But now that she finally saw him return safe and sound, she couldn’t lie to herself anymore.
She missed him and was really worried about his safety.
Seeing his wife staring at him with an aggrieved expression, Fu Chen’an felt guilty in his heart. He hastened his steps and pulled her into his embrace.
As soon as she was hugged, Yao Zhi’s tears couldn’t stop anymore. She hugged his waist tightly and said, "You are finally back."
Fu Chen’an took a deep breath and smelled his wife’s body fragrance. He buried his head in the crook of her neck and replied softly, "I’m back."
After a moment, he continued, "Wife, I’m sorry. Please don’t cry, okay?"
Hearing this, Yao Zhi just realized that she was crying. She quickly let him go and wiped her tears away, unaware that her hands were covered in flour.
Seeing her face stained with white flour, Fu Chen’an smiled. His eyes softened, and he reached out to help her clean her face.
When she finally calmed down, Yao Zhi asked, "How long will you be staying this time?"
"The General gave us a month to rest."
"So, you will stay at home for a month?" Yao Zhi asked again.
Fu Chen’an nodded. "Mhm. I will accompany you to do anything you want to do."
"Okay."
The two of them had a lot of things to tell each other, but the moment they met, they felt shy and awkward. Although they had been married for almost a year, they actually didn’t spend a lot of time with each other.
After a moment, Yao Zhi said, "You must be tired. Go wash up and change your clothes first. I will cook something for you."
Fu Chen’an glanced at the kitchen and saw two strangers staring at them from the kitchen window. "Okay."
When he went to their room, Yao Zhi returned to the kitchen. Seeing her coming, Xi Yi asked, "Master, is he your husband?"
Yao Zhi nodded and explained, "My husband just returned from the disaster area. This time, he will stay for a month before he returns to the military barracks."
Xi Yi and Xi Si nodded and made a note to inform the Ling brothers and Xi Qi to avoid disturbing their Master and her husband.
