Happy New Year! Extra chapter (2/2) from us, AerialRain! Thank you for your support!

Outside, the sound of a car engine starting rang out. Xia Mian quietly peeked out the door.

Ning Shaobai had already spotted her. He rolled down the window, smiling brightly and speaking in the gentlest tone imaginable, “Benefactor, wait for me to come back, okay?”

Xia Mian: “…”

You might as well not come back.

But she didn’t dwell on it for long. Being the kind of girl who always faced problems head-on, Xia Mian had always met challenges with grit. And now that the Damocles’ sword had been lifted, she let loose entirely.

After all, the day she’d have to “hand over a life” wasn’t far off… sob sob…

Might as well drink and be merry today—live fully in the moment!

But before she could even enjoy herself, she was nearly scared stiff by the little trio.

The current major event at home was the Mao family’s move.

Large furniture such as wardrobes and cabinets had been rebuilt during renovations. Bedding, curtains, and anything that could be replaced had been replaced.

Xia Mian and Xiao Feng took a walk around the Mao family’s new courtyard and couldn’t help but sigh, “It’s so nice.”

Xia Wenyue smiled too. “Yeah. When we first got here, I didn’t even dare imagine something like this.”

Indeed, life’s twists and turns were unpredictable. Get through the darkest days, and you might just find light at the end of the tunnel.

Mao Huizhu had already dragged Xiao Feng and Chenchen over to see her new room.

This new house had a layout similar to Xia Mian’s, except that a single-entry courtyard lacked the extra row of side rooms that a double-entry had. The rooms were also slightly smaller in size, but overall, it still felt more spacious than living at Xia Mian’s, especially since it was their own home now. The three Mao sisters each had a room of their own.

Xia Wenyue stayed at the new place to finish unpacking, while Mao Huizhu, Xiao Feng, and Chenchen ran off to the tricycle cart parked outside Xia Mian’s house to play house.

Although the new house was just next door, going back and forth repeatedly was a nuisance. To make things easier, they decided to pile all the smaller items onto a three-wheeled cargo cart that Xia Wenyue had specially borrowed for the move. Powered by a diesel engine, the cart could handle a heavier load, making it possible to transport everything in a single trip.

But when Xia Wenyue drove it back, she realized that even with a steel plate laid over the step to get past the outer gate, the inner gate just wouldn’t allow the cart through, no matter how they tried.

In the end, they had to give up and just park the cart outside the gate. They switched to a flatbed handcart instead. The three sisters worked together, and after two or three trips, they’d pretty much moved everything.

Meanwhile, the three little ones, now idle after finishing the new house tour, were fascinated by the cart. This type of vehicle was still common in small towns and rural areas, but rare in Yan City. Now that they were a bit older, their pretend play had also become a lot more realistic.

For example, this time, Mao Huizhu was the driver, while Chenchen and Xiao Feng were the passengers.

The adults let them play at first, thinking this was their usual game.

But just as Mao Huimei, Mao Huilan, and Xia Mian were pushing the handcart out through the front gate, they saw the three-wheeled cart drive off—with Xiao Feng and Chenchen sitting in the back.

Xia Mian, being at the back, only caught a glimpse of the cart pulling away and was briefly confused. “Second Aunt’s returning the cart already? I thought we’d finish the move first.”

Mao Huimei, who was walking in front, suddenly dropped the handcart and shouted, “Huizhu!”

“Here!” Mao Huizhu’s voice rang out from the driver’s seat of the cart, waving like a seasoned driver. “Big Sis, how do you stop this thing?”

Holy sht!!! How did this kid even start it?!

Mao Huimei had already taken off running, shouting anxiously, “Hold the handlebars tight! Take your foot off the pedal! Don’t press the gas!”

Xia Mian and Mao Huilan sprinted after her.

Xia Mian’s heart was about to leap out of her chest. “Xiao Feng!”

“Chenchen!” Aunt Wei, who had just come out to take out the trash, was so scared she tossed the garbage bin and chased after them.

Fortunately, Mao Huizhu followed Mao Huimei’s instructions, and the cart gradually slowed down. But it was about to shoot out of the alley—and the street beyond was full of cars and pedestrians. If it went out there, it’d be too dangerous!

Xia Mian ran faster than she ever had in her life. She finally managed to grab onto the cargo bed, jumped in, and pulled Xiao Feng and Chenchen tightly into her arms, bracing herself against the front railing.

At the same moment, Mao Huimei, now in full panic, caught up to the front and leaped onto the driver’s seat, gripping the brake with all her strength.

The vehicle finally came to a stop…

Xia Mian immediately checked the two kids in her arms. “You guys okay?!”

She could tell they weren’t physically hurt—she was just worried they’d been scared. Surprisingly, neither child seemed to have processed what had just happened. They were just staring towards the back of the cart.

Chenchen even broke into a little grin.

Following their gaze, Xia Mian saw a whole crowd chasing after them—Xia Wenyue, Aunt Wei, Ning Shaoyun, and Zhou Xuewen—all looking absolutely panicked. Combined with her and the two Mao sisters who’d been running ahead, it was indeed a bit of a ridiculous scene.

But the adults definitely weren’t laughing. Chenchen seemed to realize his parents were worried, and when Zhou Xuewen reached him, he ran straight into his arms.

Zhou Xuewen hugged his son tight. “Baby, are you okay?”

Ning Shaoyun, now sure that Chenchen was safe, nearly collapsed with relief. Zhou Xuewen had to catch her.

Xiao Feng also hugged Xia Mian around the neck and comforted her. “Auntie, I’m okay.”

Xia Mian stroked his back and let out a long sigh of relief.

To the kids, it had all been over in less than a minute, and they didn’t feel all that dangerous. But for the adults, it felt like an eternity.

Still, the fact that the kids hadn’t been scared was a blessing in itself.

Xia Wenyue finally caught her breath and, without a word, yanked Mao Huizhu down from the driver’s seat. Seeing the girl acting like nothing had happened, she immediately took off her shoe, held it in her hand, and gave her a good few whacks on the butt. “You want to be naughty?! I’ll show you naughty!”

Mao Huizhu’s eyes welled with tears, and she clung to Xia Wenyue’s leg, crying, “Mom, I won’t do it again! I promise, never again!”

“I don’t even know how it started moving…”

On the other side, Ning Shaoyun had already checked Chenchen over thoroughly. Once she confirmed he was fine, she finally relaxed. “Second Aunt, that’s enough. She didn’t mean to.”

Mao Huilan, unable to bear seeing their little sister get spanked, stepped in to help. “Mom, let’s go back and talk.”

“We’ll talk at home!” Xia Wenyue clearly wasn’t ready to let the girl off. She grabbed Mao Huizhu by the back of her collar like a kitten and started dragging her back.

After two steps, she realized she wasn’t wearing her shoes, quickly slipped them on, and finally seemed to calm down a bit. She handed Mao Huizhu off to Mao Huimei. “Huimei, take her home first. I’ll go return the cart.”

But just then, they saw Mao Huimei looking a bit embarrassed as she spoke to a young man. “He Wei, what are you doing here?”

The young man had just stepped out of his car, wearing a dazed expression. He glanced at Xia Mian, then at Mao Huimei, and finally at Mao Huizhu—who looked like a kitten that had been caught misbehaving. “Your family sure is lively, huh?”

That made Mao Huimei burst into laughter with a “pfft.”

Seeing her looking slightly shy, Xia Mian and Mao Huilan exchanged a glance.

Something’s going on here, isn’t it?
