Chapter 126 Part 2 – Just Humiliating Him Isn’t Enough (II)
Mao Huimei, as the organizer, arrived first. To avoid drawing attention, Xia Mian changed into a long black dress, tied her hair into a ponytail, and wore a baseball cap. Even if she ran into He Wei face to face, he probably wouldn’t recognize her.
By the time she got there, the private room was already packed with fifty-plus people. A projector at the front was playing karaoke videos, and guys and girls who liked singing were squatting by the song selection screen, queuing up to pick songs. The lights were dim, and no one noticed her.
Mao Huimei looked gorgeous tonight. Xia Mian had given her a smoky eye makeup look. Everyone who saw her was stunned for a moment before smirking teasingly, assuming she’d dressed up to confess to her crush.
He Wei clearly thought so too. He arrived with a guy and a girl in tow. The guy, whom Xia Mian hadn’t seen at the banquet, had a cocky, sloppy air, clearly one of He Wei’s equally shady friends. The girl was dressed provocatively with heavy makeup, a typical nightclub worker.
Xia Mian guessed He Wei had brought her along to humiliate Mao Huimei later.
When He Wei saw Mao Huimei’s outfit, he was clearly dazzled for a second before grinning even wider. Mao Huimei also gave him a sweet smile in return.
Soon, the room was almost full, and just then, the song “My Beloved” started playing on the screen.
The classmates immediately started whistling and heckling, especially a few of Mao Huimei’s close friends:
“Huimei, didn’t you say you had something to say to your boyfriend? Want to use a song to confess?”
“Shouldn’t the guy take the lead? Come on, He Wei, don’t be shy!”
“If you’re both embarrassed, just do a duet.”
“Yeah, duet, duet!”
“Or confess first, then sing together!”
“Right, right! Make it official first, then the duet!”
“You can sing while holding hands!”
“He Wei, are you a man or not? Get up there already!”
The rest clapped and cheered to hype things up.
Seeing Mao Huimei’s blushing face and the crowd’s excitement, He Wei figured the time was just right. He curled his lips into a smirk, took the mic, and looked at Mao Huimei, the mockery in his eyes now completely unhidden.
But Mao Huimei didn’t look fazed at all. She picked up the other mic and said, “Let me speak first.”
She looked at He Wei. “Actually, everyone’s misunderstood—I mainly gathered you all today to clear up my relationship with He Wei.”
The entire room exchanged puzzled glances. Someone chuckled, “Clear up? What’s there to clear up? Everyone knows he’s been chasing after you!”
Mao Huimei smiled. “Yes, he has been pursuing me.”
“Who—” He Wei, hearing her speak so boldly, gave a cold laugh and was about to respond—
But Mao Huimei was quicker, “Unfortunately, I can’t accept him.”
He Wei froze, lifting his eyes to look at her.
Everyone else was stunned too. The room fell instantly silent.
A look of sorrow appeared on Mao Huimei’s face. “I’m sorry, He Wei. We just can’t be together.”
“This past semester, you’ve brought me flowers and gifts often. When my family moved house, you, a rich young master, even lowered yourself to come help. I’ve felt your sincerity and passion.”
“How could I not be moved? But precisely because I am moved, I know even more that I can’t be with you.”
“I’ve tried to accept your feelings, I really have. But after all this time, I still can’t. I’m sorry.”
“If I just said yes and married you, it wouldn’t be fair to you. So, I’ve decided to be honest.”
He Wei’s face turned dark with anger. “What are you talking about? When did I ever say I wanted to marry you?”
Mao Huimei’s eyes filled with tears. At his words, she covered her face and choked out, “Really? That’s such a relief!”
“You have no idea how much I’ve been struggling these past few days. I kept thinking, if only you didn’t truly love me, then I wouldn’t have to feel so guilty or conflicted. You’re such a good person!”
Xia Mian was on the verge of losing it. She curled up in the corner, clutching her stomach, yet the girls around her watched with sympathetic eyes, visibly touched and full of understanding.
That’s when she remembered—Damn, this is Auntie Qiong Yao era, where melodrama reigns supreme!

He Wei stood there with clenched fists, clearly at a loss for words. Should he say he loved her? That would only make Mao Huimei feel even more triumphant. But if he said he didn’t? That would just play right into her hands.
He Wei was choking on his own fury, and just then, someone added fuel to the fire: “Mao Huimei, feelings can be cultivated. He Wei loves you so much—once you’re married, you’ll be happy together.”
Mao Huimei quickly shook her head, and tears finally slipped down her cheeks. “That wouldn’t be fair to him. I won’t do it.”
“He Wei, I’m sorry. Your love is too heavy a burden for me. I can’t accept it. Maybe I’ll regret this one day, but I still have to say: you deserve a better girl.”
Xia Mian felt she couldn’t take it anymore—and likely, neither could Mao Huimei. She brought over a large bag and stuffed it into He Wei’s hands. “These are all the gifts you gave me. From now on, give them to someone who loves you back. He Wei, I hope you live a happy life.”
She placed the mic down and ran out, covering her face.
“Hey, Huimei!”
“Huimei!”
Her close friends chased after her.
From her spot in the corner, Xia Mian watched with relish as He Wei’s face twisted in rage and humiliation. Serves him right! If only Mohe’s phone camera feature had been invented already—capturing this moment for Mao Huimei would’ve been priceless!
Oh well, describing it would be just as good.
She saw one of He Wei’s friends say something beside him. He Wei, furious, grabbed a bottle and smashed it on the floor before standing up to leave.
One of the classmates blocked him. “He Wei, the bill…”
He Wei looked up and saw a mixture of awkwardness and sympathy from the crowd. Blood rushed to his head. “It was Mao Huimei who invited you all—what does this have to do with me?!” He growled.
Everyone gasped.
As He Wei stormed off, he could still hear the whispers behind him:
“So this is who he really is?”
“What a guy! No wonder Mao Huimei doesn’t like him.”
“Guess it takes a situation like this to see someone’s true character. Good thing she turned him down.”
“Rich or not, he’s still trash. But… can Mao Huimei really afford this?”
“Let’s split the bill. What a mess.”
He Wei’s chest was heaving with anger, furious thoughts racing through his mind—Mao Huimei, just wait! You will regret it!
But before he even got out the door, someone ran in shouting, “Mao Huimei already paid the whole bill!”
The crowd burst into cheers. “Huimei’s the real deal!”
At the same time, they threw scornful looks at He Wei.
Even his friends didn’t dare speak up. One of them muttered awkwardly, “Brother Wei… did you mess this up? That wasn’t cheap—how could some country girl afford that?”
He Wei’s face turned thunderous. As if struck by a sudden realization, he ground his teeth and spat, “She must’ve found someone richer. That’s why she’s so eager to dump me!”
“Dare to play tricks on me? Mao Huimei, just you wait!”
After He Wei left, Xia Mian finally slipped out quietly to find Mao Huimei. The two had agreed to meet at the next bus stop. Xia Mian told her everything that had happened after she left, and Mao Huimei burst out laughing. “Serves him right! That self-important jerk!”
“Who does he think he is? Trying to act like some hero of justice? Let’s see if he dares to show his face on campus again.”
Xia Mian warned, “He probably won’t give up that easily.”
Mao Huimei shrugged, “Let him try. Just humiliating him isn’t enough—if I don’t beat him up, I won’t be satisfied.”
“Oh, right, Xia Mian—teach me a few moves. Next time I see him, I’m going in swinging.”
Xia Mian grinned. “You got it. No problem!”
The two of them walked back in high spirits. As they reached the mouth of the alley, Xia Mian spotted someone standing under the streetlamp from a distance.
“Is that Qi Kai?”
Mao Huimei took a closer look, her brow tightening. “It’s him. What’s he doing here?”
Xia Mian narrowed her eyes. “I think I can guess.”
She handed her phone to Mao Huimei. “Record it. Since he’s so eager to dig his own grave, we might as well help him.”
“I’ll follow behind you and listen in on what he wants.”
Mao Huimei nodded, tucked the phone into her pocket, and walked forward.
Xia Mian watched as Qi Kai stopped her. The moment they turned the corner, she quietly followed. They paused just out of sight, close enough for her to catch every word of their conversation.
Qi Kai appeared especially cautious. “Huimei, don’t be sad.”
Mao Huimei frowned. “Who said I’m sad?”
Qi Kai assumed she was just putting on a brave face and sighed. “I heard… He Wei rejected you.”
Xia Mian almost laughed. So the news hadn’t reached him yet? But then again, Qi Kai had always put on the act of a proud and upright poor boy. He didn’t even own a mobile phone, so naturally, he couldn’t have gotten the latest update.
But he was afraid of missing this prime opportunity to swoop in, so he just showed up, assuming things had gone his way.
What made him so confident and desperate, though, was something else—
“Huimei…” He hesitated, as if struggling to get the words out. “I also heard what happened between you and He Wei…”
Mao Huimei’s expression turned cold. “What exactly happened between me and He Wei?”
“Didn’t you two spend the night together on the mountain? He’s been bragging about it to his friends. A lot of people know…”
Qi Kai looked stricken with guilt and anguish. “Rich guys like him never truly love anyone. Girls are just trophies for them, something to show off. Once they get what they want, they’ll toss you aside…”
“I should’ve come to you earlier. Even if you didn’t want to see me, I should’ve come anyway.” Qi Kai looked like he was about to cry. “I just didn’t think he’d… do that to you…”
As he spoke, he suddenly grabbed Mao Huimei’s hand. “It’s okay, Huimei. It’s okay. Don’t be scared. You still have me. I don’t care about that. I love you.”
Mao Huimei was thoroughly disgusted. She flung his hand away and snapped, “Stop pretending. Aren’t you dating Lu Nana?”
Qi Kai blurted out, “They forced me to! I had no choice. That He Wei is incredibly snobbish. If I didn’t agree to date Lu Nana, I wouldn’t even be able to get a job.”
“Huimei, I just wanted to prove myself to you. I love you. I wanted to marry you in style.”
“You don’t have to worry about Lu Nana,” Qi Kai said. “These rich girls are just playing around too. If I stop being useful or start annoying her, she’ll dump me.”
“Just wait for me, okay? I love you. The only one I’ve ever truly loved is you.”
Mao Huimei sneered. “You only love money, Qi Kai. Don’t think I don’t see right through you.”
“You’re even more disgusting and despicable than He Wei. Even if all the men on Earth died, I still wouldn’t be with you. Give up already!”
Qi Kai’s expression shifted, still refusing to admit it. “Huimei, what are you saying?”
“You know exactly what I’m saying,” she said. “And let me tell you—yes, my parents have three daughters, but whatever they are going to leave for us is to be split evenly. So don’t even think about taking advantage of us.”
“And don’t show your face in front of me again. If you do, I’ll damn sure have a nice chat with Lu Nana!”
“You dare!” Qi Kai blurted out.
Then quickly changed his tone, trying to appeal with sincerity. “Huimei, why are you so angry? Even if you say something, she won’t believe you. She’ll just make trouble for you.”
He made one last desperate attempt. “Huimei, I don’t know why you think that of me. I’ve never once thought about using your family.”
“How about this—I’ll swear to the heavens: if I ever covet your family’s wealth, may I be struck by lightning!”
Mao Huimei gave a cold smile. “No need for oaths. Write me a statement instead. Promise you’ll never try to touch our family’s money.”
“Promise you’ll never use me to ask Xia Mian or Dr. Ning for help with anything.”
Qi Kai’s face finally turned completely grim.
Mao Huimei didn’t want to waste another word on him. “Get lost.” She scoffed, then turned to leave.
But Qi Kai suddenly said, “Do your parents know you’ve lost your virginity?”
“Mao Huimei, maybe I won’t come looking for you again—but if you dare say a word to Lu Nana, I’ll make sure the whole campus knows you’re used goods.”
“Once that happens, don’t even dream of marrying into a decent family!”
