Chapter 132 – The Retribution We Deserve
Chapter 132 – The Retribution We Deserve
He Wei listened to the recording once, his hands trembling as he rewound and played it again.
The voice, the tone—it was unmistakably Qi Kai, the very man he had once admired. He could hardly believe the words, but there was no denying it now.
He Wei clutched his hair in despair. His first reaction was denial, but reason left no room for doubt. If the one lying from the start had been Qi Kai, then what exactly had he done to Mao Huimei over the past six months?!
Once the prejudice was shattered, every moment he had shared with Mao Huimei came rushing back, now seen through a different lens.
She had treasured each bouquet he gave her; returned every gift with equal sincerity.
What he had mistaken for calculation was, in truth, her pride.
What he’d seen as cautious flattery was simply her attentiveness and respect.
Like any girl in love, she had taken their relationship to heart…
And then it struck him: throughout those six months, she had never asked a single thing of him.
“He Wei!” He Min came looking for him and stopped short at the look on his face. “What happened to you?”
“Don’t tell me that wild girl Mao Huimei insulted you again?”
“Well, don’t take it so hard. Actually, you can start pitying her now,” He Min said with a smug grin. “She disappeared for a couple of days. We thought she was hiding from us. But today, she suddenly turned up with a lawyer to sign the contract.”
“She even sent someone to negotiate the machinery purchase.”
“She’s so naive. Still in school and already dreaming about running a factory? What a joke!”
He Wei’s expression shifted instantly. Without a word, he turned and bolted toward the office.
Inside, while waiting for Director Zhang to arrive, Mao Huimei was reviewing the contract with her lawyer when the door flew open. He Wei rushed in, out of breath, and slammed his hand down on the papers.
“Huimei, don’t sign it!”
Mao Huimei brushed his hand aside, annoyed. “What do you think you’re doing?! This is confidential business. Get out!”
“Huimei, listen to me,” He Wei pleaded. “No bank will fund this place. It still owes months of back wages, and the problems left behind would take millions to fix.”
Seeing she refused to look at him, He Wei grabbed her wrist. “I was wrong about you. I… I only got involved with this factory to spite you, to make you look bad—but I didn’t really want to hurt you.”
“I was waiting to tell you that today. If dealing with Director Zhang is too difficult, let me handle it—”
“He Wei!” Mao Huimei jerked her hand away, furious. “Who do you think you are? What right do you have to meddle in my affairs?”
She was already in a foul mood, and now she finally snapped. She stood and stared him down. “What do you take me for? Some backward country girl? A gold-digger chasing after money and status? And dumb enough to be played for a fool?”
He Wei froze. “I… I didn’t…”
“That’s exactly what you think about me, and you know that!” Mao Huimei sneered. “But stop assuming you know everything.”
“I never act on impulse just to get back at others, especially not over someone like you…” She shot him a cold, contemptuous look. “You’re not that significant to me.”
“All the problems you mentioned, Director Zhang has disclosed them from the very beginning. We’ve prepared countermeasures, so don’t trouble yourself. Please leave.”
He Wei couldn’t believe it. “How can you open without a loan? Did Zhang Defa trick you…”
“He Wei!” Mao Huimei snapped, “Would you stop using your pathetic assumptions to maliciously judge others? Not everyone in this world is as despicable as you!”
“If Director Zhang were really as selfish as you think, the factory would’ve been sold off long ago. Why would he wait for you to use it as a trap against me?”
He Wei had no reply.
Mao Huimei said coldly, “My affairs have nothing to do with you. Leave. Now.”
Seeing him still unmoved, she added, “If you have time to meddle in my business, maybe worry about your pretty cousin instead.”
“You heard it too—Qi Kai is just like you. No limits to what he’ll do to cling to the wealthy and marry into the Lu family.”
At this point, she sneered, “Looking at it that way, I guess it makes sense you admire him.”
He Wei clenched his fists tightly, gritting his teeth. “I was deceived!”
Mao Huimei replied coldly, “And what does that have to do with me?”
Just then, Director Zhang entered with his subordinates. Seeing He Wei there, he asked in confusion, “What’s going on?”
Mao Huimei smiled. “Nothing. Director Zhang, let’s proceed with signing the contract.” She glanced at He Wei, still giving both sides some dignity. “Otherwise, I’m afraid Young Master He might try to snatch the deal from me.”
Director Zhang chuckled. “Of course not. Miss Mao, let’s go ahead and finish the transfer.”
He Wei was kicked out of the office. He exhaled deeply, took out his phone, and called Lu Nana. “Where are you?”
“…”
“Is Qi Kai with you?”
“…”
“Stay right there—you both wait for me!”
He Wei sped to the apartment Lu Nana had bought for herself. The moment he saw Qi Kai, he threw a punch straight at him; no words, no warning.
Lu Nana shrieked and rushed to pull him back. “Stop it! What are you doing, Brother?!”
He Wei landed another blow before stepping back, breath ragged. “He lied to us. Did you know that? He’s been lying to you this whole time!”
“I know, he already told me everything.” Lu Nana pleaded with him, her voice shaking. “But he regrets it already! Please forgive him, okay? He’ll love me properly from now on!”
He Wei looked at her like he didn’t recognize her, then turned his gaze to Qi Kai, eyes sharp and cold. “You move fast. What did you feed her to get her on your side so quickly?”
Qi Kai stayed silent. Lu Nana answered for him, “He did love Mao Huimei. He dated me later out of spite after things went bad between them.”
“All the things he said about Mao Huimei were just angry words.”
Lu Nana blushed slightly as she added, “But now he’s started to fall for me. He’s going to be good to me from now on.”
He Wei sneered. “Qi Kai, do you think my cousin’s that easy to fool?”
“You think that just because there’s no proof of what you said, you can lie your way out of this?” He grabbed Lu Nana’s arm. “Come with me. I’ll let you hear for yourself what he said to Mao Huimei that night!”
In his fury, he’d forgotten to bring the recording with him.
“He was only dumped by Mao Huimei because he was after the Mao family’s wealth—and now he’s with you for the same reason!”
“The moment he finds someone better, he’ll toss you aside!”
Qi Kai’s expression changed, then he lowered his head and said with a trace of sadness, “I don’t know what you heard that made you see me this way. But if that’s how it is…” He turned to Lu Nana, eyes heavy with regret, jaw clenched. “Nana, let’s break up for now. When I’ve proven myself—”
“No! I don’t want to break up! I believe you!” Lu Nana cried out. She turned to block He Wei, confronting him face to face. “Brother, he only did those things because he wanted to prove himself. He just wanted to be worthy of me. He knows he was wrong now! Why won’t you give him a chance?”
“Didn’t you also admire his abilities? ‘Don’t look down on a poor youth’—you’re the one who said that!”
He Wei looked at his cousin, furious. “So you’d rather believe him than believe me?”
“Big Brother…” Lu Nana clung to his hand, pleading. “You’re both important to me. What am I supposed to do…”
He Wei didn’t buy it, “All you have to do is come downstairs with me and hear for yourself what he had said!”
Lu Nana glanced back at Qi Kai, then quickly shook her head. “The past doesn’t matter anymore. Qi Kai and I have agreed to move forward together.”
“Brother, we’ll live a good life, I promise. Time will prove everything…”
Those words, that look in her eyes… He Wei’s expression shifted slightly. He stared at Lu Nana, watching her closely—until his eyes locked onto her collar. His breath caught. Clinging onto a shred of hope, his voice trembled, “Nana, don’t tell me… don’t tell me you two already…”
Lu Nana realized what he’d seen. She quickly covered the spot, her cheeks burning red. “Brother~”
“Qi Kai, you bastard!” He Wei lunged again, but Lu Nana held him back tightly. “Brother! Don’t hit him, don’t! It was my fault. I seduced him.”
Qi Kai clambered up awkwardly, still maintaining that calm and resigned demeanor. “Don’t blame Nana—it was me, I lost control. You can hit me all you want; I won’t fight back. I’ll take responsibility for Nana.”
“Take responsibility, my ass!” He Wei broke free from Lu Nana and dove at Qi Kai. “You scheming rat! You think I don’t know what you’re after? Qi Kai, I’m telling you—you’ll never get away with this!”
Qi Kai didn’t fight back. He didn’t even try to defend himself, which made Lu Nana even more heartbroken. She pulled hard on He Wei’s arm, furious. “What gives you the right to hit him? How many good girls have you slept with?! Shouldn’t you be beating yourself up instead?”
He Wei stared at her in disbelief. “What did you just say?”
Lu Nana scrambled to press a handkerchief to Qi Kai’s bloody nose, speaking without thinking. “Am I wrong? Didn’t you sleep with Mao Huimei too?”
“At least he’s serious about me. We’ll get married after graduation!”
“And you? You played with Mao Huimei and dumped her—how is that any better?!”
“Bullshit!” He Wei roared, “Mao Huimei’s got way more self-respect than you! She’s nothing like your shameless self!”
Lu Nana, already feeling anxious and ashamed after losing her virginity, burst into tears at his words. “Yes! I’m shameless! I like him, and I’m going to marry him!”
He Wei trembled all over with rage. “Great, just great!”
“This is the damn retribution we deserve for what we did to Mao Huimei!” He suddenly kicked over a nearby cup and pointed at Lu Nana. “Do whatever the hell you want! I won’t stop you! Just don’t come crying to me when you regret it!”
As he stormed out of the apartment, He Wei felt like a complete, pathetic joke.
He clenched his fists, determined to go back to Mao Huimei. Whatever she wanted to do to him—beat him, curse him—he’d accept it, as long as she gave him a chance to make things right.
