Chapter 147 Part 1 – Dr. Ning, You Dug That Pit Too Early (I)

Fang Yongpeng had finally overcome all obstacles and won the hand of his beloved.

The group moved on to the hotel, and only then did Wang Tao and Xia Li rush in. Since this was the groom’s side’s turf, the two of them were all smiles as they entered, trying not to let anyone catch on. It wasn’t until they were alone with Xia Wenyue that Wang Tao spoke angrily, “Second Aunt, I’m really sorry. That damn Xia Bao got arrested by the police last night.”

“We were called to the station and didn’t finish giving our statements until mid-morning. What a damn mess!”

Xia Wenyue wasn’t the least bit surprised and asked directly, “Did the police say how long he’s going to be held?”

“No idea. They said that the investigation is still ongoing. It’s not the first time he’s stolen something, and it’s probably not just from our construction site either.”

At this, Wang Tao was practically gnashing his teeth. “I always knew he had a habit of petty theft, but I didn’t think he’d go this far. Stuff I bought for over ten thousand yuan was sold for just a few thousand!”

“I’ve always been worried he’d do something stupid, so I put up with it when he came around asking for pocket money every other day. I never imagined he’d be this shameless!”

“Takes my money on one end and goes around stealing my steel on the other…”

The more he spoke, the angrier he became. He glanced at Xia Li and added, “Anyway, I’m done with him this time. Let the police keep him in there for a few days so he can learn his lesson. If I don’t draw the line now, next time he’ll be stealing from someone else! I can’t be cleaning up his mess forever.”

Xia Li didn’t say anything. It was clear she, too, had completely given up on Xia Bao and silently agreed with Wang Tao’s decision.

Xia Wenyue knew it better: for a charge amounting to tens of thousands, Xia Bao was probably looking at five years minimum, not just a few days.

Still, she said nothing. Someone like Xia Bao was practically a walking disaster. Since his parents had not only failed to discipline him but let him run loose to harm others, then they could damn well face the consequences. Otherwise, they’d keep thinking the world would bow to them just because they were shameless enough.

Now that she knew Xia Bao wouldn’t be getting out to disrupt her daughter’s big day, Xia Wenyue could turn her full attention to the wedding.

Wang Tao and Xia Li quickly took in the atmosphere of the wedding banquet and soon pushed thoughts of Xia Bao to the back of their minds.

Wang Tao, excited, pointed to a group of people not far away. “Whoa, Second Aunt, you even invited celebrities?”

It was Mao Zhishan and a few of his close friends.

“This is incredible!” Xia Li said with envy. “Sister Huimei’s wedding is just amazing.”

Before moving to Yan City, Xia Wenyue had rarely returned to her maternal home—especially since she had bad blood with Xia Chengzu’s family—so Xia Li had never met Mao Zhishan.

In the past couple of days, while the family reconnected, Mao Zhishan had been rushing through filming to free up time for his daughter’s wedding, so the couple still hadn’t realized that he was Xia Wenyue’s husband.

Just as Xia Wenyue was about to introduce them, Wang Tao couldn’t hold back his excitement and blurted out, “They’re all taking pictures! I’m going to get one too!” Without waiting, he ran off.

Xia Li hurried after him with Junjun in her arms.

Xia Wenyue looked at them speechlessly, then shook her head and let them be.

Meanwhile, in the bridal dressing room, Mao Huimei was changing when Xia Li came running in, thrilled. “I just took a photo with Mao Zhishan! Did you guys already get yours?”

She turned to Mao Huimei and asked, “Sis, did your family invite this celebrity, or was it your in-laws? So impressive!”

Xia Mian, Mao Huimei, and Mao Huilan exchanged glances and quickly reached a silent agreement, smiling mischievously without revealing the truth.

It was Xia Li’s first time being so close to a celebrity, and she was so excited she couldn’t stop talking. “When will the photos be ready? I’ve got to get a big one printed and hang it on our wall at home.”

She then teased Junjun, “Our little Junjun has had his photo taken with a celebrity since he was a baby. He can show off to Jinjin when we get back!”

The dressing room door swung open, and Mao Huizhu rushed in like the wind. “Sis, are you ready? The emcee is calling!”

Mao Zhishan followed right behind her, looking both happy and wistful as he gazed at Mao Huimei. “Huimei.”

Mao Huimei stepped forward, took his arm, and rubbed her head affectionately against his shoulder. “Dad.”

Mao Zhishan took a deep breath and held her hand. “Let’s go.”

Mao Huizhu and Qiangqiang, who had run in after her, quickly stepped forward to help carry Mao Huimei’s gown as they walked out.

Xia Mian passed by and laughed as she saw Xia Li staring in shock with wide eyes. “Hey, snap out of it.”

Only then did Xia Li come to her senses. “That was Mao Zhishan, right? Why did Sister Huimei call him ‘Dad’?!”

Her voice rose uncontrollably, startling Junjun. “Mom!”

Xia Li quickly patted him to calm him down, then hurriedly asked Xia Mian for confirmation, “Mao Zhishan is our second uncle? Really?! Oh my god!! Our second uncle is a celebrity?”

“Mao Zhishan is actually our uncle?”

Xia Mian didn’t even need to reply. Xia Li was already rambling excitedly, holding Junjun up with a grin. “Oh wow, our little Junjun’s great-uncle is a big celebrity! We’ve got to take lots of photos to show Jinjin when we get back.”

Xia Mian chuckled. “Alright, let’s go downstairs. The ceremony’s about to start.”

“Oh, right.” Xia Li responded, still feeling like it was all surreal. “Oh my god, our Second Uncle is a celebrity. How did he even become one?”

Then she suddenly thought of something and warned Xia Mian, “We absolutely can’t let the people back home find out, especially the Mao family.”

“The whole county knows that their eldest grandson is obsessed with becoming an actor. If they find out Second Uncle is a celebrity, Second Aunt’s family won’t have a moment of peace.”

She added with a note of relief, “Good thing Xia Bao’s locked up. Otherwise, he’d definitely show up today, fishing for red envelopes. If he found out about the celebrity thing, not even twenty thousand yuan would be enough to shut him up.”

That’s exactly why Second Aunt had someone keeping an eye on him and made sure to get him into the police station before today, Xia Mian thought. Luckily, he was stealing on a daily basis—it was always just a matter of picking the right time to get him arrested.

But now that Xia Bao was out of the picture, whoever was behind him would likely start working through Wang Tao and Xia Li. As Xia Mian was wondering what kind of tricks Fan Xiaowan might try today, she spotted a middle-aged man she didn’t recognize talking to Wang Tao nearby.

Xia Li wondered, “Huh? Why is President Sun here? He’s one of our family’s friends?” Then she introduced him to Xia Mian, “He’s the one who told us your boyfriend is Young Master Ning.”

As Xia Mian followed Xia Li over, she overheard that President Sun was speaking urgently. “…I’m telling you, that’s really Young Master Ning!”

“Oh, come on, how can you not recognize someone that important? Instead of kissing up to him, you’re wasting time schmoozing with people like us who don’t even come close!”

“Yeah, right,” Wang Tao said dismissively. “He’s just a doctor. No way he’s some Young Master Ning.”

Then he added proudly, “Let me tell you, he may not be some young master, but he’s still impressive. A doctor at Yan University Hospital. If you ever need anything, President Sun, come to me—my family’s connected at the hospital now.”

President Sun was about to explode. “Young Master Ning is a medical PhD who studied abroad. He’s got a lab at Yan University Hospital and has investments in the hundreds of millions! Isn’t that your wife’s cousin’s boyfriend?”

Wang Tao said, “Well, yeah, he’s at Yan University Hospital. But no way he’s some ‘Young Master Ning.’ If he were really some rich guy, wouldn’t he be living in a villa with a bunch of servants?”

“Tell me, what kind of rich young master washes vegetables, cuts fruit, peels shrimp for his woman, and feeds a kid?”

That shut President Sun up for a moment. “You’ve got to be making this up!”

Wang Tao pointed two fingers at his eyes, then at the other man, full of conviction. “I saw it with my own eyes. Just watch for yourself later.”

President Sun remained skeptical. Even with his experience, it really didn’t sound like the behavior of a wealthy young master.

By then, Xia Li had run over, excitedly sharing that Mao Zhishan was her uncle. Wang Tao’s whole face lit up when he heard it. “Seriously?”

“Of course! He’s right there, walking arm in arm with Sister Huimei!” Xia Li pointed, and Wang Tao spotted Mao Zhishan beside the bride. He immediately lost all interest in any talk about Young Master Ning and instead grabbed President Sun to brag, “Hey, did you hear that? Mao Zhishan is our uncle! Come on, you’ve never met a celebrity before, right?”

He threw his arm around the other man like he was doing him a huge favor. “Want a photo? I’ll get you one later. You can print it and hang it on your wall. How awesome would that be?”

President Sun was dragged away by Wang Tao. Xia Mian called Mao Huizhu over and quietly instructed, “Keep an eye on that President Sun. See if he steps out to make a phone call. Listen in on what he says and come back to tell me.”

Mao Huizhu asked warily, “Is he one of the bad guys sent by those trying to hurt you?”

Xia Mian wasn’t surprised she knew—this girl was an expert eavesdropper; there wasn’t much at home that could be kept from her.

“Possibly,” Xia Mian nodded.

Xiao Feng, who had come running over, immediately locked his eyes on President Sun, and Chenchen added, “Don’t worry, Auntie Mian. We promise to complete the mission!”

Xia Mian ruffled each of their heads. “Alright then, I’m counting on you!”
