Chapter 45.5 – Uninvited Guest (V)
Just then, the sound of a car horn came from outside.
Moments later, Aunt Wei walked in, her expression uneasy. “Xiao Yun, Fan Xiuzhi is here.”
Ning Shaoyun’s expression shifted slightly. Xia Mian quickly removed her cucumber slices and ran to wash her face. Before leaving, she hurriedly reminded Mao Huilan, “Don’t forget to put moisturizer cream on your dad’s face! Today was all for him, so don’t let it go to waste.”
Xia Mian followed Ning Shaoyun back and saw Fan Xiuzhi standing at the entrance of the main house. Xia Mian was slightly taken aback—Fan Xiuzhi appeared to be in her thirties, with delicate features, her hair neatly tied up, and dressed in a business attire that exuded both competence and feminine elegance.
If not for knowing she was the mastermind behind Chenchen’s kidnapping, it would be hard to imagine such a charming exterior concealing such malice.
However, Fan Xiuzhi quickly revealed her true nature. With a face full of affection, she stretched out her arms toward Chenchen, who was playing nearby. “Chenchen, come here and let Grandma hold you. Oh, my poor child, Grandma almost didn’t get to see you again.”
Ning Shaoyun’s expression immediately changed as she stepped forward and pulled Chenchen protectively into her arms.
Chenchen looked up in confusion, “Mom?”
Ning Shaoyun composed herself, gently patting Chenchen’s head. “It’s nothing. Go play with Xiao Feng. Mom has to entertain a guest.”
Chenchen glanced at Fan Xiuzhi before taking Xiao Feng’s hand and heading back to the Xia family courtyard.
Fan Xiuzhi remained standing there awkwardly, her arms still outstretched. She turned to Ning Shaoyun and said, “Xiao Yun, what’s going on? Why are you treating me like a villain?”
With a sigh, she added, “I know you all hold grudges against me, but your grandpa is so old now. You’ve been back for days and haven’t visited him. Ever since he heard about Chenchen’s incident, he hasn’t been eating or sleeping well, constantly worried.”
“If Xiao Yang hadn’t run into you that day, we wouldn’t even have known you siblings had returned. Don’t take your anger at me out on your poor grandpa.”
Ning Shaoyun clenched her fists tightly. “Fan Xiuzhi, stop playing dumb. We both know well what’s going on.”
Fan Xiuzhi furrowed her brow, putting on an innocent, wronged expression as she shook her head. “You’re so temperamental. It’s a good thing Chenchen is fine. If something had really happened to him, what use would your anger be? Life would still have to go on, wouldn’t it?”
“And look at you, falling out with Xuewen. Without him, aren’t you even more helpless? What’s the point of all this?”
Xia Mian couldn’t help but click her tongue. No wonder Ning Shaobai worried Ning Shaoyun wasn’t a match for her. Fan Xiuzhi was like a supercharged version of Fan Xiaowan.
Too ruthless. Not only did she hit where it hurt, but she also rubbed salt into the wounds for good measure.
“That’s none of your concern,” Ning Shaoyun said coldly. “You’re not welcome here.”
Fan Xiuzhi put on the expression of someone dealing with an unreasonable child and turned to Xia Mian. “Well, you must be Xia Mian, right? I’ve heard you saved our Chenchen. We’re truly grateful.”
She gave Ning Shaoyun a reproachful look. “You and Shaobai are unbelievable. You didn’t mention you were back, nor did you tell the family about Chenchen’s savior. We had to hear it from someone else and come here so late—it’s so impolite of us.”
Xia Mian smiled. “You’re too kind. It was just a small effort on my part.”
“But rather than thanking me, catching the culprit who tried to kidnap Chenchen should be the priority. What kind of heartless person would harm a child like that? Honestly, even being executed a hundred times wouldn’t be enough punishment.”
“If Grandpa Ning already knows about this, then you must have known for a while too, right?” Xia Mian added with a sweet smile. “With the Ning family’s influence, I’m surprised you haven’t caught that beast yet.”
Fan Xiuzhi’s expression darkened slightly, but Xia Mian continued as if suddenly understanding. “Oh, I get it. It’s because the culprit is wearing a human disguise, right? That must make it harder to find.”
“But as they say, the net of justice is vast and nothing can escape it. No matter how well they pretend, their true nature as a beast will eventually come out. When that happens, Auntie, I hope you’ll deal with them properly. Sending them right to the firing squad would be the best.”
Fan Xiuzhi maintained a polite smile, but her eyes were cold. “I’ve heard that Miss Xia is bold and straightforward. I think they’ve underestimated your courage.”
Xia Mian smiled back. “You flatter me.”
Fan Xiuzhi said, “In any case, you saved Chenchen, and we owe you a debt of gratitude.”
“Since Xiao Bai has already arranged a place for you to stay, let me arrange some work for you as well.” Fan Xiuzhi smiled warmly. “I heard you completed one year of high school. There are many suitable roles in our projects for someone with your skills.”
“The Ning family and Huo family projects aside,” she continued, tilting her head as if recalling something, “Oh, I almost forgot to tell you some good news. Our family has partnered with Mohe Corporation. You might not know of them—they manufacture mobile phones.”
She looked at Ning Shaoyun. “Xiao Yun, I heard you have one? Those aren’t easy to come by. Did Rong Xin help you get it?”
“By the time we celebrate your grandpa’s birthday, we’ll have signed the contract with Mohe. Soon, our company will be producing all the mobile phones in the country.” She smiled at Xia Mian. “I’ll make sure to send you one. Or, if you’d like, you could even work for the company.”
Xia Mian and Ning Shaoyun exchanged odd looks.
From what they knew, weren’t the phones they used being produced by a company Ning Shaobai had invested in?
