Turns out, it never came to the point where Han Haoyan had to step in. When the school dispersed, there wasn’t a single thug in sight at the bustling school gate. As she walked through the gate, linking arms with Sun Yuexin, Xia Mian suddenly seemed to remember something and turned to ask Han Haoyan, “Did you run into the dean at noon?”

Han Haoyan blinked and nodded. “Yeah, I heard those thugs even stole someone’s money.”

“Correct, and that ‘someone’ was the fat sheep I snatched back from them.”

As Xia Mian was speaking, that very fat sheep appeared.

“Senior,” the boy jogged over, looking quite thrilled. “I got my money back. The dean said that the girl they stopped is fine too.”

“Mm, I know.” Xia Mian nodded. “Next time, you know what to do?”

“I know.” The boy nodded again. “Thanks, senior.”

On the side, Han Haoyan suddenly put two and two together. “It was you who called the dean.”

Sun Yuexin rolled her eyes. “You really don’t understand our Xia Mian at all. Even if she hates Tian Xueya, she’d never let her be in real danger.”

“Unlike some people who have no bottom lines.”

Han Haoyan awkwardly rubbed his nose, then took a big step to block Xia Mian’s path.

Xia Mian looked up at him, unimpressed. “What?”

He leaned down slightly to meet her eyes. “I misunderstood you today, and I sincerely apologize. I’ll take full responsibility for this. Until those thugs are dealt with, I’ll escort you to and from school every day.”

A few teasing whistles sounded around them. Xia Mian felt irritated—her mood had already been bad today, and now she’d had to deal with all this nonsense.

She pressed one finger to Han Haoyan’s shoulder and pushed him aside, speaking dully. “No need.”

She wasn’t in the mood for any flirty games and told him, very bluntly, “Han Haoyan, I accept your apology, but from now on, please stay away from me. I have to concentrate on my studies.”

Han Haoyan hadn’t expected his handsome face to be so ineffective. Every time he did this, what girl didn’t blush and get shy? Smiling, he caught up and walked backward in front of her. “Don’t be like that. I’ve already apologized, and the ordeal has made us know each other. We can say we are friends now; why be so heartless?”

Xia Mian replied, completely expressionless. “Well, you’re not entirely wrong. If not for your sudden confrontation, I wouldn’t know your IQ isn’t that high, and that you’re so fickle with girls.”

Sun Yuexin paused. “So it’s not that he has bad taste, but that he’ll go for any girl?”

Xia Mian was amused. “Pretty accurate summary.”

Li Lizhen suddenly realized. “I knew it! Who just gets together after knowing someone for a week?”

Han Haoyan protested, “Hey, hey, hey, that’s going too far. I haven’t been with anyone, I’ve never even had a girlfriend.”

“What, you don’t believe me?”

“I believe you!” Xia Mian said. “So please, keep it that way.”

Han Haoyan was momentarily speechless, then leaned in with a sulky look. “No matter what, I promised to take care of the thugs, and I will.”

“Then go deal with them. Following me won’t solve it, right?” Xia Mian said. Not wanting to be pestered in the future, she added, “And besides, this whole thing started because of Tian Xueya. Why are you covering for her? That’s her boyfriend’s job.”

“You’re insisting on seeing this through because you’re pursuing her, right?”

Han Haoyan was astonished. He turned to Sun Yuexin. “Has her mouth always been this sharp?”

Sun Yuexin grinned smugly. “You haven’t even seen her at her sharpest.”

They happened to reach a fork in the road. Xia Mian bid them goodbye. “See you Monday.”

She had barely taken a few steps when Han Haoyan called from behind, “Protecting girls is every man’s responsibility! I already told you—I can’t ignore injustice. So for now, consider me your knight in shining armor!”

Quick on the uptake, huh? she thought. Whistles and teasing calls sounded behind her, but Xia Mian ignored them. When it’s about stepping in to right wrongs, who could outdo me? Hah!

When Xia Mian arrived home and saw the gate shut, she glanced at her watch, then turned on her heel and made her way to Ning Shaobai’s place. From the training room came the sound of heavy impacts. She wondered if the kids had already begun such intense drills, but when she pushed the door open, it was Ning Shaobai she found inside—throwing punches at the bag.

He had clearly been at it for a while. He wore only a white, tight-fitting shirt, sweat glistening over the well-defined muscles of his torso, catching the light with every movement.

‘Pretty sexy,’ Xia Mian couldn’t help thinking, though it was a pity such a nice body was not destined for girls like her.

Hearing the door open, Ning Shaobai stopped. When he saw it was Xia Mian, he immediately bent to pick up the sports jacket on the floor and put it on. “School’s out?”

His voice still carried a hint of disordered breath, the kind that could make anyone’s knees go weak.

Xia Mian shook her head and asked, “Where are the kids?”

“Chenchen heard Xiao Feng likes going to the zoo, and since Huo Xuewen happened to come over, I had him take them along. My sister and yours went too. No need to worry.”

Xia Mian caught on. “Xiao Feng looks depressed today?”

Ning Shaobai said, “He should be in a good mood when he gets back.” He studied her carefully. “And you?”

“Huh?” Xia Mian was taken aback.

Zipping his jacket all the way up, he asked, “Want to spar a bit?”

Xia Mian immediately took off her shoes, stepped into the training room, tossed her schoolbag aside, and lunged straight at him.

Ning Shaobai reacted quickly and dodged to the side, “No heads-up, huh?”

Xia Mian pounced again. At first, Ning Shaobai mainly dodged, but gradually, he had no choice but to counterattack.

They went back and forth. Xia Mian always had a few unexpected moves, while Ning Shaobai had the advantage in size and strength. As the fight grew fiercer, Xia Mian felt the long-lost rush of adrenaline.

Ning Shaobai threw a punch suddenly. Xia Mian bent backward to dodge, and something fell out of her pocket.

He glanced at it—pink, heart-shaped.

Well, well…

In a flash, he caught her wrist, twisting her into his arms, and bent to pick up the letter. “What’s this?”

Breathing hard, Xia Mian realized his grip was tight. Giving up struggling, she leaned against him and looked up with a smile. “Dr. Ning, don’t tell me you’ve never received a love letter.”

Ning Shaobai narrowed his eyes. “Yours?”
