Chapter 389 Discord Sharper Than Demonic Claws
Chapter 389 Discord Sharper Than Demonic Claws
Although many harbored doubts, the matter was deliberately left unspoken. Without solid evidence, raising such accusations would only breed distrust. And distrust was the last thing anyone wanted-especially when they were already struggling to deal with Demonic Beasts and Demonic Cultivators on multiple fronts.
"A spy, you say?"
Minister Xiu Yucheng repeated the words slowly, his gaze fixed on Zhao Wutian.
His expression neither hardened with suspicion nor softened with denial. Instead, it grew thoughtful-heavy with caution.
"What you say makes sense," Minister Xiu Yucheng admitted calmly.
"But," he continued, his voice steady, "is it not too quick to arrive at such a conclusion?"
Accusing the presence of a spy without concrete proof was no small matter. This was not a case of a Demonic Cultivator hiding among them.
If it were, their Demonic Qi would have betrayed them long ago.
Such a thing could not be concealed forever-especially within a gathering of high-ranking experts.
Everyone present had fought with all their strength, and none had used Demonic Qi. That much was beyond doubt.
Which meant that no Demonic Cultivator had infiltrated their ranks.
Then there was only one terrifying possibility left.
A righteous cultivator, a powerful leader at that, was siding with the Demonic Cultivators.
That was what made the situation truly frightening.
It meant that a traitor-someone who cultivated righteous Qi-had forsaken their humanity to assist those inhumane beings.
If it were a Demonic Cultivator who had infiltrated them, identifying the culprit would have been easy.
But if one of their own had betrayed them...
Then finding such a person would be unimaginably difficult.
Pursuing the matter recklessly would only give rise to suspicion and paranoia.
Allies would begin to doubt one another. Unity would fracture. The army would weaken itself-long before the enemy struck again.
At a time when they were already struggling against Demonic Beasts and Demonic Cultivators alike-
Distrust was the last weapon they could afford to turn inward.
Their only hope would be to catch the traitor red-handed-at the moment they made contact with the Demonic Cultivators.
The atmosphere grew heavy.
The silence that followed felt oppressive, as if the air itself were pressing down on the gathered leaders.
Minister Xiu Yucheng finally spoke again, his voice measured and firm.
"Suspicions alone are not enough," he said, his gaze steady as it settled on Zhao Wutian.
"Do you have any concrete proof?"
Zhao Wutian did not respond immediately.
"No," he admitted at last. "I do not have solid evidence."
A brief stir passed through the pavilion.
"But," Zhao Wutian continued, lifting his head, "I do have a suspect in mind."
Minister Xiu Yucheng's brows knitted together.
"A suspect? Who?"
Zhao Wutian did not answer immediately.
Instead, his gaze shifted-
Slowly and Deliberately.
And finally settled on Bai Tianheng.
Every eye in the pavilion followed his line of sight, and in an instant, the atmosphere changed.
Zhao Wutian spoke again, his voice steady, yet edged with something sharp.
"Bai Clan Leader," he said, "among all the forces present here... your Bai Clan suffered the least losses today."
The words struck like a hammer.
Some leaders frowned deeply. Others exchanged uneasy glances. A few looked
conflicted, clearly uncomfortable with where this was heading.
Compared to the devastation suffered by the Li and Zhao Clans-
The Bai Clan's condition was indeed striking.
Bai Tianheng's eyes narrowed instantly.
"Zhao Wutian," he said coldly, stepping forward, irritation unmistakable in his
voice,
"What exactly are you trying to say?"
The tension snapped tight-like a bowstring drawn to its limit.
"I am not accusing you," Zhao Wutian replied, "but it is suspicious that your Bai Clan suffered almost no casualties despite the Demonic Cultivators' invasion."
"Heh? So what?"
Bai Tianheng let out a mocking laugh.
"Zhao Wutian, don't blame me for your Zhao Clan's inadequacies. What? Should
I have ordered my men to die like your Zhao Clan members?"
Zhao Wutian was clearly angered by the reply, though he forced himself to
remain composed.
"Bai Tianheng," he said sharply, "you must be colluding with the Demonic Cultivators. Otherwise, it makes no sense that your Bai Clan lost almost no
one!"
"Tch! How foolish can you be?"
Bai Tianheng snorted.
"Yes, my Bai Clan suffered the fewest casualties-but we also killed the most Demonic Cultivators. How many did your clan kill?"
He continued relentlessly.
"It's obvious your clan failed to perform, yet you dare accuse us? You bring up spies and point fingers at me-Zhao Wutian, isn't this the act of sowing
discord?"
"Aren't you the one helping the Demonic Cultivators? Just looking at how much
your clan has killed them, I doubt whether your Clan deliberately let them off."
"Bai Tianheng, Zhao Wutian snapped, "do you have evidence for such claims?"
"Then do you?"
The argument quickly devolved into open bickering between the two.
From Zhao Wutian's perspective, it was understandable.
He had lost too many clan members-while his rival clan had barely suffered
losses at all.
No wonder he was furious.
No wonder he was so quick to point fingers.
"Enough!"
Minister Xiu Yucheng finally intervened, raising his voice.
"That's enough, both of you. Calm down!"
He felt a headache coming on.
He had thought the two had settled their differences previous-but now, here
they were again, arguing like children in the middle of a crisis.
"For now," Minister Xiu Yucheng said firmly, "there is no need to pursue the
matter of traitors."
"We will uncover the truth slowly and carefully."
He swept his gaze across the room.
"At present, our priority remains unchanged. Demonic Beasts And Demonic
Cultivators."
Minister Xiu Yucheng let the silence settle before continuing.
"Another matter which has been bugging me is that the Demonic Cultivators
did not deploy their Immortal Realm experts."
A heavy silence followed.
The realization weighed heavily on everyone present.
~
"If they were willing to sacrifice so many Demonic Cultivators and Demonic Beasts without committing their Immortal Realm forces," Minister Xiu Yucheng
continued, "then this battle was never meant to decide anything."
"It was preparation!"
His gaze swept across the leaders.
"And if that is the case, then the next battle will be very different."
No one spoke. "When the Demonic Cultivators strike again," Minister Xiu Yucheng said gravely,
"they will not hold back."
"This time," he continued, "they will come with their full strength."
"We must assume that the next confrontation will be decisive," Minister Xiu
Yucheng said. "If we are unprepared, there will be no second chance."
He paused, letting his words sink in.
"From this moment on," he declared, "all forces must remain on high alert." "Perhaps the Next Clash against them might be our last!"
