Unexpected Second Chance at Love

Chapter 1053: Where Love Began

Chapter 1053: Where Love Began

The last rays of sunlight stretched across the ocean as Yue Ling and Lu Tian prepared to leave Lee Shin’s resting place.

The white roses remained neatly arranged at the base of the tombstone. The delicate petals stirred beneath the cold sea breeze.

Yue Ling stood before the grave for a little longer, her bluish-green eyes resting on the familiar photograph.

There were countless things she wanted to tell him.

Memories she could have revisited, stories she could have shared, and words she had never found the courage to speak when he was alive.

But for the first time in three years, she no longer felt the desperate need to remain there until the ache in her chest became unbearable.

She had spoken to him.

She had told him about the child she had lost, the happiness she had found, and the man who now stood beside her.

And somehow, that was enough.

A gentle smile touched her lips.

"Goodbye, Shin."

Beside her, Lu Tian inclined his head toward the tombstone.

"Take care, Lee Shin."

His voice was quiet but sincere then he reached for Yue Ling’s hand.

She placed hers in his without hesitation.

Together, they walked toward the small white gate, leaving the solitary tombstone overlooking the endless ocean.

The wind followed them along the narrow dirt path, carrying the distant sound of waves crashing against the rocks below.

Neither spoke as they made their way down the mountainside.

Their footsteps moved in an unhurried rhythm, accompanied by the rustling of winter grass and the occasional cries of seabirds returning toward the coast.

When they reached the lower trail, Yue Ling stopped.

Lu Tian followed her gaze.

Beyond the slope, a stretch of pale sandy beach curved along the foot of the mountain.

The ocean shimmered beneath the setting sun, its surface reflecting shades of orange and gold.

Yue Ling looked toward the shore.

"Tian?"

"Hm?"

"Can we walk along the beach before heading to my family home?"

Lu Tian looked toward the coastline.

They still had some daylight left, but the temperature would drop quickly once the sun disappeared. The ocean breeze was already cold enough to make him concerned about her getting sick.

His first instinct was to refuse.

But when he turned back and saw the hopeful expression in her bluish-green eyes, he found himself unable to say no.

"Just a short walk," he finally agreed. "It’ll be colder once the sun sets."

Yue Ling’s face brightened.

"Thank you."

Lu Tian shook his head with a helpless smile.

"You’re welcome, my love."

Still holding hands, they followed the path leading down toward the beach.

By the time they reached the shore, the late-afternoon sun had begun its descent toward the horizon, painting the sky in shades of gold and soft orange.

The ocean stretched endlessly before them, its surface shimmering beneath the fading daylight.

Yue Ling slowed her steps.

It had been years since she last walked along this beach, yet the salty breeze and gentle rhythm of the waves were just as she remembered.

"Shall we?" Lu Tian asked.

She turned toward him and smiled.

"Let’s."

They walked along the sandy shore for a while before Yue Ling stopped and glanced down at her shoes.

Lu Tian noticed immediately.

"What are you doing?"

Instead of answering, she slipped one foot out of her shoe.

"Yue Ling."

She looked up innocently.

"Yes?"

"It’s cold."

"I know."

"Then why are you taking off your shoes?"

"Because I want to feel the sand."

Before he could protest, she removed her other shoe and stepped onto the cool sand.

Lu Tian sighed.

"You’re really determined to make me worry, aren’t you?"

Yue Ling laughed.

"Only a little."

She placed her shoes on a dry patch of sand, safely away from the incoming tide.

"Are you coming?"

Lu Tian looked at her bare feet, then at the waves rolling gently toward the shore.

After a moment, he bent down and removed his own shoes, placing them beside hers.

Yue Ling’s smile widened.

"See? Isn’t this better?"

"We haven’t even reached the water yet."

"Then hurry."

She laughed and made her way toward the shoreline.

The moment a small wave washed over her feet, she inhaled sharply at the cold.

"Cold?" Lu Tian asked.

"A little."

"Then—"

"But it feels wonderful."

She turned toward him with a radiant smile.

Lu Tian stopped speaking.

The golden sunlight illuminated her face, catching in the loose strands of her hair as the ocean breeze swept past.

Seeing how much she was enjoying herself, he could not bring himself to interrupt her.

Yue Ling turned back toward the ocean and closed her eyes.

After visiting her family and Lee Shin’s grave, she felt as though a weight she had carried for years had finally begun to lift.

The grief was still there, but today she had spoken of her happiness without feeling guilty for having found it.

She opened her eyes and began walking along the shoreline.

Her bare feet left delicate footprints in the wet sand, and Lu Tian followed a step behind. His longer strides naturally brought his feet into the impressions she left behind.

They walked in comfortable silence as the sun continued its slow descent.

After some time, Yue Ling stopped and turned toward the horizon.

"My parents met here..."

Lu Tian slowed beside her.

"You mentioned that the last time we were here."

Yue Ling smiled faintly.

"They were children when both of my grandfathers planned a trip to bring their families to this beach on the same day."

She chuckled.

"My father was playing near the water when he saw my mother struggling to build a sandcastle. He went over to help, but instead of making things better, he accidentally knocked the whole thing down."

Lu Tian’s lips curved.

"That sounds like an excellent first impression."

Yue Ling laughed.

"According to my grandmother, my mother was furious. She cried so hard that my father panicked and promised to build her the biggest sandcastle on the entire beach."

"Did he?"

"He tried. But by the time they finished, the tide had already washed most of it away."

"And she forgave him?"

"Eventually. After he promised to buy her ice cream."

"Smart man."

"Very."

Yue Ling looked toward the distant shoreline.

"Because my grandfathers were best friends, my parents grew up spending time together, and eventually their friendship became something more."

She paused, her smile growing tender.

"Years later, when they were older, my father brought my mother back to this very beach."

Lu Tian listened attentively.

"It was here that he finally told her he loved her."

The memory made Yue Ling smile.

She turned around to face him.

She stood motionless as the cold winter breeze swept in from the sea, brushing against her skin and stirring loose strands of her hair. Yet she barely noticed its icy touch.

Her bluish-green eyes remained fixed on Lu Tian, their depths shimmering with emotions too profound for words.

Love, tenderness, and an overwhelming sense of gratitude mingled with the quiet ache of everything they had endured together.

She studied his face, taking in every familiar feature as though committing it to memory all over again. Her heart swelled with an affection so fierce it nearly brought tears to her eyes.

After everything life had taken from her, this man had become someone she could no longer imagine living without.

And as she gazed at him, a gentle smile touched her lips, carrying a thousand unspoken words meant for him alone.

Lu Tian noticed her gaze.

He remained silent, his dark brown eyes meeting hers with their usual composure. Yet as the seconds passed, something in his expression subtly shifted.

The faint tension between his brows eased, and the coldness that often lingered in his gaze softened.

He knew that look.

There was no sadness in it, nor was she troubled by something she refused to share. It was simply the way she looked at him when her heart held more than she could put into words.

And somehow, that quiet affection affected him more deeply than any declaration could.

"What is it?" he asked, his voice low.

Yue Ling shook her head.

"Nothing."

A faint smile touched his lips.

"Then why are you staring at me?"

Her smile deepened.

"Can’t I look at the man who will become my husband?"

"You can."

His answer came without hesitation.

Yue Ling let out a soft laugh and Lu Tian’s lips curved slightly.

He said nothing more.

Instead, he stepped closer and reached for her hand, his fingers naturally intertwining with hers.

The warmth of his palm contrasted with the cold air surrounding them.

Yue Ling lowered her gaze briefly to their joined hands before looking up at him again.

"Do you know what I’m thinking?" she asked.

Lu Tian studied her.

"Tell me."

She smiled.

"I’m glad it’s you."

His expression remained composed, but his fingers tightened almost imperceptibly around hers.

For a moment, he simply looked at her.

He understood what she meant.

After everything they had endured, after the losses and hardships that had shaped their lives, she was glad that he was the man standing beside her.

And hearing those words stirred a warmth in his chest that he made no effort to express aloud.

Instead, he raised his free hand and gently tucked a windblown strand of hair behind her ear.

"So am I," he replied quietly.

Yue Ling’s eyes softened.

Lu Tian glanced toward the sea before returning his attention to her.

"You’re cold."

Before she could protest, he drew her closer and adjusted his coat around her shoulders, shielding her from the breeze.

Yue Ling smiled at his familiar protectiveness.

"I’m fine."

"I know."

Yet he kept her close.

She slipped her arms around his waist and rested her cheek against his chest.

Lu Tian lowered his gaze to her.

For a brief moment, his eyes lingered on the top of her head before he placed a hand against her back.

He did not tighten his embrace unnecessarily or fill the silence with promises.

He simply held her.

The sound of waves breaking against the shore drifted around them, accompanied by the faint rustling of the wind.

After a while, Yue Ling lifted her head.

"Tian?"

"Hm?"

"I love you."

Lu Tian looked down at her.

There was no surprise in his expression, only a quiet tenderness that softened the sharp lines of his face.

He brushed his thumb across her cheek.

"I know."

Yue Ling arched an eyebrow.

"That’s all?"

A faint amusement flickered in his eyes.

He leaned down and pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead.

"I love you too, wife."

Satisfied, Yue Ling smiled and rested against him once more.

Lu Tian looked out toward the distant horizon, one arm resting securely around her waist.

His expression gradually returned to its usual calm.

But his other hand remained intertwined with hers, his thumb occasionally brushing over her knuckles.

It was a small, almost absentminded gesture.

One that Yue Ling knew he reserved only for her.

And as they stood together beneath the pale winter sky, neither felt the need to say anything more.

Yue Ling listened to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat.

"You don’t know how happy I am to have met you."

She leaned more into him.

"What brought us together may have been someone’s scheme, but I’m glad you never stopped forcing your way into my life."

Lu Tian frowned at the reminder of how they had ended up in the same hotel room.

He still disliked the circumstances surrounding that night. Someone had manipulated their lives, placing either of them in a situation they had never chosen.

Yet he could not deny that what followed had brought him the happiness he now held in his arms.

Afterward, Yue Ling had tried repeatedly to convince him to forget what happened and return to their separate lives.

But how could he?

He had already fallen for her.

Perhaps his heart had made its decision even earlier, when he first saw her seated in first class. Something about her had drawn him in before he fully understood why.

Looking back, he wondered whether some part of him had recognized her.

Lu Tian lowered his head and kissed her hair.

"Even if that night hadn’t happened, I would have found my way to you."

Yue Ling smiled against his chest.

"You’re that confident?"

"Very."

"And what if I kept pushing you away?"

"Then I would have found another way to make you fall in love with me."

She pulled back to look at him.

"Mr. Lu, you sound awfully sure of yourself."

He smiled.

"When it comes to you, I have to be."

Yue Ling laughed. She remembered how they were neighbors at Jade Condos, but Lu Tian practically moved himself in with her.

Even pushing her to take responsibility for him.

Lu Tian brushed his thumb against her cheek.

"But I would never have forced you to love me. I only wanted the chance to show you that I was serious."

Her expression softened.

She knew that.

Despite his persistence, he had never demanded her affection. He had given her time to trust him, even when she was determined to keep her distance.

"Thank you for loving me," she said.

Lu Tian looked at her.

"I’ll make sure to show the whole world how much I love you."

A slow smile spread across his face upon hearing her words.

"Then I can’t wait to see it."

Yue Ling rose onto her toes and kissed his lips.

"Be prepared, because I won’t hold back."

Lu Tian laughed.

"Then I’ll hold you to your word."

"You’d better."

He leaned closer.

"Should I be worried?"

"Very."

His laughter deepened.

Yue Ling watched him with a tender smile.

Lu Tian had never asked her to become someone else. He knew her strengths, her flaws, and the dangerous world she occupied, yet his affection had never wavered.

She wanted to give him that same certainty.

With her, he did not always have to be the powerful, unshakable man everyone feared.

He could simply be Tian.

Her husband.

The man she loved.

By the time their conversation settled into a comfortable silence, the sun was touching the horizon.

The golden light had deepened into amber, and the ocean breeze was growing colder.

Lu Tian glanced down at the water washing around their feet.

"You’ve been standing in the cold water for too long. We should head back."

Yue Ling looked up at him in disbelief.

"Mr. Lu, I believe you’ve been standing here just as long as I have."

He shrugged.

"I don’t get sick easily."

Yue Ling laughed.

"I’m the same!"

"That’s not guaranteed."

He took her hand and began leading her toward their shoes.

"Besides, our wedding is only days away. I can’t have you getting sick and missing it."

Yue Ling playfully slapped his arm.

"Don’t jinx it!"

Lu Tian stopped and looked down at the place she had struck before slowly raising his eyes to meet hers.

His expression changed.

The cold, intimidating man feared throughout Imperial suddenly looked as though he had suffered a terrible injustice.

"Yue Ling."

She blinked.

"What?"

He placed a hand over his chest.

"How could you?"

Her mouth parted.

"How can you hit the person you love?"

Yue Ling stared at him before scoffing in disbelief.

"Lu Tian!"

"First you confess your undying love for me," he said solemnly, "and now you’re attacking me."

She burst into laughter.

"Attacking you? I barely touched you!"

"It still hurt."

"Really?"

"Deeply."

He pressed his hand against his chest.

"Right here."

Yue Ling shook her head, laughing so hard she had to cover her mouth.

"You’re impossible!"

Lu Tian’s serious expression finally cracked.

A smile spread across his face as he reached for her hand.

"Come, my love. Let us go."

Yue Ling rolled her eyes, but the smile never left her face.

"You’re lucky I love you."

"I know."

He brought her hand to his lips and kissed her knuckles.

"Very lucky."

They returned to where their shoes waited then headed toward a nearby foot-washing station.

Yue Ling placed her shoes on a bench and reached for the water tap.

Before she could turn it on, Lu Tian gently caught her wrist.

"I’ll do it."

She blinked.

"Tian, I can—"

"I know."

He guided her toward the bench.

"Sit."

Yue Ling stared at him.

"You’re doing it again."

"Doing what?"

"Treating me like I can’t take care of myself."

Lu Tian smiled faintly.

"I know you can."

"Then—"

"But I want to."

Before she could argue further, he crouched in front of her and gently lifted one of her feet beneath the stream of clean water.

His movements were careful and unhurried as he washed away the sand clinging to her skin.

Yue Ling looked down at him.

This was Lu Tian, the man whose name alone could make influential figures think twice before crossing him.

Yet here he was, crouching before her at a public beach, washing sand from her feet without the slightest concern for who might see him.

After rinsing her other foot, he took a clean handkerchief from his coat pocket and carefully dried her feet before helping her slip back into her shoes.

"Tian, I’m not a child. I could have done it myself."

She glanced at his bare feet.

"Besides, you still need to clean yours."

Lu Tian looked up with a faint smile.

"I wanted to."

Yue Ling sighed helplessly.

"You really don’t have to do everything for me."

"I know."

He rose and set the used handkerchief aside before turning toward the tap.

"But I enjoy taking care of you."

Her expression softened.

Then something occurred to her.

"You know..."

Lu Tian glanced at her.

"Hm?"

She leaned toward him, her eyes narrowing playfully.

"I heard you’re a germaphobe."

He raised an eyebrow.

"And?"

Yue Ling glanced at the handkerchief he had just used to dry her feet.

"It’s a little hard to believe."

Lu Tian gave her a matter-of-fact look.

"I am."

He turned on the water and began rinsing the sand from his own feet.

"Really?"

"Really."

"Then how come you don’t seem bothered when it comes to me?"

Lu Tian finished rinsing one foot before looking up.

"Because with you, it’s different."

Yue Ling blinked.

He returned his attention to washing away the remaining sand.

"I don’t like people touching my things. I don’t like sharing personal belongings, and I certainly don’t enjoy unnecessary physical contact."

He paused briefly.

"But you’re not anyone."

Yue Ling smiled.

"So?"

Lu Tian looked at her as though the answer should have been obvious.

"You’re the exception."

Her smile deepened.

"Just me?"

"Just you."

His answer was simple.

But it was the truth.

Lu Tian had disliked feeling dirty for as long as he could remember.

Even as a child, he had been unusually sensitive to anything he considered unclean.

The thought of touching objects handled by strangers often made him uncomfortable.

Shaking hands with unfamiliar people had been something he avoided whenever possible.

And when he had no choice but to touch something that unsettled him, he would feel compelled to clean his hands thoroughly afterward.

Sometimes once wasn’t enough.

There were occasions when he would clean an object repeatedly before he could bring himself to use it.

His mother had noticed those habits when he was young.

Although she had tried to help him manage them, the discomfort had remained a part of his life.

As he grew older, he learned to control his reactions.

He could attend business meetings.

Handle documents.

Shake hands when circumstances absolutely required it.

But the uneasiness never completely disappeared.

He simply became better at concealing it.

Physical closeness was another matter.

Lu Tian had never enjoyed people invading his personal space.

He disliked unnecessary touching, particularly from strangers.

And he was especially uncomfortable when women he barely knew attempted to approach him too familiarly.

It was one of the reasons he rarely attended social gatherings hosted by other prominent families.

The crowded rooms, constant introductions, and expectations of polite physical contact had never appealed to him.

He preferred to avoid such events altogether.

There were exceptions, of course.

His mother had always been one.

His aunt and cousin were people whose closeness he had learned to tolerate. Although even with them, he maintained certain boundaries.

For most of his life, that had been enough.

Then he met Han Yue Ling.

And something changed.

He couldn’t explain it.

He didn’t understand why her touch never caused the same discomfort.

Why he could hold her hand for hours without feeling the urge to wash his own.

Why he could pull her into his arms, kiss her, or allow her to rest against him without the slightest uneasiness.

With Yue Ling, physical closeness felt natural.

Comforting.

Necessary, even.

He liked the warmth of her skin against his.

He liked the way she would absentmindedly reach for his hand.

He liked how easily she leaned against him whenever she was tired.

And he had discovered that he could tolerate things he would never have accepted from anyone else.

A little sand on her feet.

Her damp hair brushing against his face.

Her cold fingers slipping beneath his coat to steal his warmth.

None of it bothered him.

He didn’t feel the need to pull away.

He only wanted to hold her closer.

It wasn’t that his discomfort with everything else had disappeared.

It hadn’t.

But Yue Ling was different.

She had become the one person around whom he never felt the need to maintain those carefully constructed boundaries.

And he treasured that freedom more than he could ever explain.

Yue Ling rested her chin against her hand.

"What if I touched everything on your desk?"

"You already do."

Yue Ling laughed.

"What if I stole your clothes?"

"You already do that too."

"What if I drank from your cup?"

Lu Tian gave her an amused look.

"Yue Ling, you’ve been doing that since the beginning."

She grinned.

"And you don’t mind?"

He shook his head.

"Not in the slightest."

Yue Ling watched him finish cleaning his feet.

"You’re really strange, Mr. Lu."

Lu Tian slipped into his shoes before turning toward her.

"Only when it comes to you, Mrs. Lu."

He extended his hand. Yue Ling placed hers in his without hesitation.

As he helped her to her feet, she stepped closer and wrapped her free arm around his waist.

"Then I suppose I should feel honored."

Lu Tian lowered his head.

"You should."

She laughed.

"How arrogant."

"Only stating the truth."

Yue Ling shook her head before leaning against him.

By now, the sun had slipped beneath the horizon, leaving streaks of violet and gold across the evening sky.

She looked back toward the ocean.

Somewhere along this beach, her parents had met as children. Years later, her father had confessed his love to her mother beneath the same endless sky.

She wondered what they would say if they could see her now.

Perhaps her mother would tease her about how affectionate she had become, while her father would pretend to be stern with Lu Tian before eventually welcoming him into the family.

The thought brought a gentle ache to her heart, but it was accompanied by a smile.

Lu Tian noticed her lingering gaze.

"What are you thinking about?"

Yue Ling looked up at him.

"Just how beautiful this place is."

He followed her gaze toward the sea.

"It is."

"I’m glad we came."

"So am I."

Yue Ling squeezed his hand.

"Thank you for bringing me here, Tian."

He brushed a loose strand of hair away from her cheek.

"You don’t have to thank me."

"I know."

She smiled.

"But I want to."

Lu Tian leaned down and kissed her forehead before drawing her against his side.

"Come. It’s getting late."

Yue Ling nodded.

This time, she did not protest.

They followed the path away from the beach as the last light of evening faded behind them.

When Lu Tian complained about how cold her hands had become, Yue Ling laughed and slipped both hands into his coat pockets.

He shook his head helplessly before pulling her closer.

They still had the evening ahead of them at Han Mansion, where they would spend the night before returning to Imperial the following morning.

Behind them, the waves slowly erased the footprints they had left along the shore.

The beach had given her parents their beginning.

And now, years later, it had given Yue Ling another memory she would treasure.

One that belonged entirely to her and Lu Tian.
