Chapter 1058: A Place Beside You
Chapter 1058: A Place Beside You
Night had settled deeply over the Han Mansion
Beyond its tall windows, the winter wind whispered through the bare branches, stirring the shadows that stretched across the moonlit gardens.
A thin veil of frost glistened along the stone pathways, while the pale moon hung silently above the sleeping estate.
The mansion stood as it had for years, beautiful and undisturbed, its walls guarding memories of a family whose laughter had long since faded.
Most of its rooms remained dark.
The hallways were silent.
Yet on the second floor, behind the closed door of a young woman’s childhood bedroom, a gentle warmth had returned to a place that had known only emptiness for far too long.
The faint sound of running water drifted from the attached bathroom.
Lu Tian sat at the edge of the narrow bed, his phone resting in one hand as he reviewed the last of his work messages.
Every so often, his gaze wandered from the screen toward the overnight bag beside the dresser.
More precisely, toward the little velvet box his wife had carefully hidden inside.
A faint smile touched his lips.
He was still curious.
But he had promised not to peek, and a promise made to his wife was one he intended to keep.
With a quiet chuckle, he returned his attention to his phone.
Lu Tian scrolled through the work documents on his phone, but his attention soon drifted elsewhere.
Xu Long’s unexpected phone call continued to linger in his mind.
What could have been so urgent that his assistant felt compelled to contact him?
The one week he had agreed to give Xu Long had not yet passed.
His assistant was not a man who acted recklessly, especially when it came to matters requiring discretion.
Lu Tian’s thumb stilled against the screen.
His expression gradually darkened.
For Xu Long to call him directly when the one week isn’t up yet, he must have uncovered something significant.
Something that could not wait until his return to Imperial.
But what troubled Lu Tian most was not the call itself.
It was the hesitation he had heard in Xu Long’s voice.
His assistant had sounded unusually cautious, as though he were struggling to decide how much to reveal over the phone.
Xu Long had worked beside him long enough to know that very few things could unsettle him.
Yet there had been something in his voice that Lu Tian could not quite dismiss.
A cold glint flickered through his dark eyes.
What exactly had Xu Long discovered?
And why did he have the unsettling feeling that whatever it was had something to do with the past?
Lu Tian slowly lowered his phone.
For reasons he could not explain, he recalled the photographs he had seen downstairs earlier that evening.
The smiling faces.
The memories of people who were no longer alive.
He frowned.
Perhaps it was merely the atmosphere of the mansion influencing his thoughts.
Still, a faint uneasiness settled in his chest.
He had spent years learning that the most dangerous secrets were rarely the ones buried in darkness.
They were the ones hidden beneath things everyone had already accepted as the truth.
And somewhere in Imperial, Xu Long might have uncovered something that was never meant to see the light of day.
Something that could force them to question not only what they knew about the past, but who they had believed was buried within it.
An unsettling thought crossed his mind.
Could the information Xu Long had uncovered involve his wife?
Lu Tian’s gaze darkened.
Was Yue Ling in danger?
His fingers tightened around the phone.
He knew better than anyone how many enemies his wife had being the leader of Fate. Even he had enemies of his own, some of whom would gladly use the people closest to him to bring him down.
And that was what troubled him most.
With their enemies lurking in the shadows, how could he be certain that someone hadn’t already set their sights on Yue Ling?
Worse still, what if the danger came from someone neither of them had ever considered an enemy?
A cold uneasiness settled in his chest.
He could tolerate threats directed at himself. But when it came to Yue Ling, even the slightest possibility of danger was enough to awaken the ruthlessness he kept carefully restrained.
His eyes shifted toward the closed bathroom door.
Whatever Xu Long had discovered, Lu Tian silently hoped it had nothing to do with her.
Because if someone was plotting against his wife, he would make certain they never had the chance to carry it out.
But for now, there was little he could do.
He would have to wait until they returned to Imperial to learn what Xu Long had uncovered. Only then could he determine whether the information posed a threat to his wife.
Yet the thought of waiting left him deeply unsettled.
What if Xu Long had discovered something that required his immediate attention? What if someone was already moving against Yue Ling while he remained unaware?
Lu Tian’s fingers tightened around his phone.
He had faced countless dangers without hesitation. Even when death stood before him, he had never allowed fear to cloud his judgment.
But his wife was different.
The mere thought of losing her was enough to send an icy chill through his veins.
He knew how it felt when danger came without warning. He knew the helplessness of arriving too late, when all the power in the world could no longer change what had happened.
And he was terrified of experiencing that helplessness when it came to his wife.
His gaze shifted toward the closed bathroom door.
The steady sound of running water continued from within.
She was only a few steps away.
Safe.
Unharmed.
Yet an irrational part of him wanted to open the door, pull her into his arms, and keep her there until he was certain nothing in this world could reach her.
Lu Tian slowly closed his eyes.
He had finally found the little girl he had once promised to protect. After all those years apart, fate had brought her back into his life.
He had already broken his promise once by forgetting her.
He would not break it again by failing to protect her.
Still, beneath his cold determination lingered a fear he could neither silence nor dismiss.
What if the danger had already begun moving toward her, and he was wasting precious time by waiting?
Lu Tian opened his eyes.
A dangerous coldness settled over his expression.
He would hear what Xu Long had discovered the moment they returned to Imperial.
And if someone had set their sights on Yue Ling, he would find them before they could make their move.
Because this time, he had far more to lose than his own life.
He had her.
And the thought of a world without her was something he refused to endure.
A little while later, the sound of running water ceased.
The mansion fell silent once more.
Then, with a soft click, the bathroom door opened.
Yue Ling stepped out wearing her sleepwear, her freshly washed hair falling loosely over her shoulders.
A faint trace of warmth followed her from the bathroom, contrasting with the winter chill lingering beyond the bedroom windows.
She found Lu Tian sitting on the bed, his attention fixed on his phone.
"Still working?"
He looked up immediately. His eyes searched hers for a long second. He couldn’t tell her what was going on in his mind.
"Just finishing a few things."
She smiled and walked toward the dresser to dry her hair.
Lu Tian watched her for a moment before returning his attention to his phone.
By the time Yue Ling finished, he had already put his phone away.
She approached the bed.
He lifted the blanket.
"Come here."
Yue Ling looked at the narrow mattress then at him.
A small smile appeared on her face.
"Are you sure?"
Lu Tian gave her a confident look.
"Of course."
She climbed onto the bed.
He followed, carefully lowering himself beside her.
Almost immediately, they discovered the problem.
The bed was far too narrow.
Lu Tian lay on his side, one arm beneath his head while the other wrapped around Yue Ling’s waist.
His broad shoulders occupied a considerable portion of the mattress.
Yue Ling was practically pressed against his chest.
There was barely enough room for either of them to move.
She shifted slightly.
Lu Tian tightened his hold.
"Careful."
Yue Ling stopped.
She looked down at the edge of the bed.
Then she looked at him.
"Um..."
"Hmm?"
"I think this might have been a bad idea."
Lu Tian’s eyes were already closed.
"I disagree."
She frowned.
"Tian."
"I think it’s a wonderful idea."
He pulled her closer.
Yue Ling stared at him.
"How?"
He opened one eye.
"You’re close to me."
She blinked.
"That’s your reason?"
"It’s an excellent reason."
Yue Ling shook her head.
"You’re impossible."
"So you’ve told me."
She tried shifting onto her back.
The movement caused Lu Tian to adjust his position.
The mattress dipped beneath his weight.
Yue Ling immediately grabbed his arm.
"Wait!"
He stopped.
"What?"
She glanced toward the edge.
"One more move and one of us is going to fall."
Lu Tian looked past her.
Then he glanced over his own shoulder.
There was very little space left.
He considered the situation for a moment then he calmly pulled her back into his embrace.
"Problem solved."
Yue Ling stared at him.
"How is that solving anything?"
"You’re not moving."
"Neither are you."
"Exactly."
She let out a helpless laugh.
"Tian, I’m serious."
"So am I."
He closed his eyes again.
Yue Ling looked at their sleeping position.
They were practically pressed together from head to toe.
His arm was wrapped securely around her waist, while one of her legs rested between his.
There was barely enough space for the blanket, much less two adults.
She sighed.
"What if one of us falls off the bed?"
Lu Tian opened his eyes.
He lowered his head and pressed a gentle kiss against her forehead.
"I’m holding you."
Yue Ling looked up at him.
"If you fall, I fall."
Her expression softened.
But before she could respond, he leaned down and kissed her lips.
When he pulled away, a faint smile curved his mouth.
"And if I fall..."
He brushed a strand of hair away from her face.
"I’ll make sure to cushion your fall."
Yue Ling stared at him then she laughed.
A warm, genuine laugh that filled the quiet bedroom.
"You’re ridiculous."
Lu Tian smiled.
"Only when it comes to my wife."
She shook her head and settled against his chest.
His heartbeat was steady beneath her cheek.
For a while, neither spoke.
The room was quiet except for the faint hum of the heating system and the occasional whisper of wind against the windows.
Yue Ling’s gaze wandered toward the shelves across the room.
The stuffed animals remained exactly where she had left them.
The books were still neatly arranged.
The photographs on her dresser continued preserving moments from a childhood that now felt impossibly distant.
For years, this room had remained untouched.
A place she returned to only when she wanted to remember.
But tonight, something was different.
The bed was no longer empty.
The silence was no longer lonely.
And the memories, though still painful, no longer seemed quite as heavy.
She tightened her arm around Lu Tian’s waist.
"Tian?"
"Hmm?"
"Thank you for coming here with me."
His hand moved gently along her back.
"There’s nowhere else I’d rather be."
She smiled against his chest.
"Even on this tiny bed?"
He chuckled.
"Especially on this tiny bed."
Yue Ling laughed softly.
Then she lifted her head.
"You know, we could have stayed in one of the guest rooms. They have much bigger beds."
Lu Tian opened his eyes.
For a moment, he simply stared at her.
Then his brows slowly drew together.
"You’re telling me this now?"
She pressed her lips together, trying not to laugh.
"You didn’t ask."
"Yue Ling."
Her shoulders began shaking.
He narrowed his eyes.
"You knew there were bigger beds?"
She finally burst into laughter.
Lu Tian stared at her for another second before shaking his head.
His expression softened.
"Such a troublesome wife."
She smiled sweetly.
"Yet you love me."
He pulled her closer.
"Unfortunately, far too much."
"Unfortunately?"
He kissed her forehead.
"Hopelessly."
Yue Ling’s laughter gradually faded into a warm smile.
She rested her head against his chest once more.
Lu Tian adjusted the blanket around her shoulders, making sure she was comfortable despite the limited space.
His arm remained securely around her waist.
Outside, the moonlight filtered through the curtains, casting faint silver patterns across the floor.
The mansion stood quietly beneath the winter sky.
Within its walls were countless memories of people Yue Ling would always love and miss.
But tonight, as she lay in her childhood bed with her husband’s arms wrapped around her, she felt something she had not experienced in this room for a very long time.
Peace.
Her eyes slowly closed.
Lu Tian lowered his gaze toward her. He watched as her breathing gradually became slow and even.
A faint smile touched his lips.
He gently kissed the top of her head.
"Good night, my love."
Yue Ling stirred slightly.
"Good night, Tian."
He closed his eyes, but his hold on her never loosened.
Not when he still had no idea whether the information Xu Long had uncovered would bring good news or something far more sinister.
Until he knew the truth, he could not silence the uneasiness gnawing at his heart.
He tightened his embrace ever so slightly, careful not to disturb her sleep.
For now, she was safe in his arms. But he couldn’t shake the fear that something beyond his reach was already threatening to take that peace away.
And in the quiet warmth of her childhood bedroom, surrounded by memories of the past, they slowly drifted to sleep together.
For the first time in years, the Han Mansion was no longer merely a place where Yue Ling returned to remember those she had lost.
It was a home where she could begin making new memories with the man she loved.
Yet while Yue Ling and Lu Tian slept peacefully in each other’s arms, far away in Imperial, an entirely different night had unfolded.
Neither was aware of the meetings their subordinates had encountered in their absence.
Meetings that had brought unexpected revelations, unsettling suspicions, and questions that could no longer be ignored.
For now, their subordinates had chosen to keep those discoveries to themselves.
But secrets had a way of finding their way into the light.
And while the couple slept beneath the quiet winter moon, the shadows of the past were already beginning to stir.
Their peaceful night would not change what awaited them upon their return to Imperial.
