Chapter 991: When will this end...

Morning came over Imperial as the snow had ceased, leaving the ground in a blanket of white. Yue Ling stood in front of the bedroom’s floor-to-ceiling window in silence.

Her bluish-green eyes gaze down at the snow with an expression lost in time.

After finding out where her brother was being held, she had to endure the raging urge to go to where he was and kill every person who played a part in his kidnapping.

Her grandfather had also informed them that Zhong Yang didn’t get a good look at the people because everything happened so fast.

However, it didn’t matter anymore because they already knew who was behind it.

"Yue Ling?"

Lu Tian’s deep voice comes from behind her as he approaches. His steps were quiet but loud enough to alert someone to his approach. However, she doesn’t turn to look at him.

His brows slightly furrowed, wondering if she was thinking about the plan to rescue her brother or the sudden news about her grandfather’s health.

He stops behind her and carefully wraps his arms around her waist, pulling her close to his chest.

"What are you thinking, my love?"

Yue Ling doesn’t flinch at his sudden embrace.

"I’m thinking about... why do these things keep happening..."

She leans her head back and rests against his chest. Her eyes raised to look up at the sky as if searching for an answer.

"I just found out my grandfather can leave any moment forever, then before I can even have the time to process this news, my brother ends up getting kidnapped..."

Her eyes gradually close, and she takes in a deep breath.

"When will this end for me... is this my fate?"

Lu Tian felt his hurt ache for his wife. Watching someone so strong, like her, look so vulnerable made him feel so helpless sometimes.

He tightens his hold on her and rests his chin on her shoulder.

"Things we don’t want will always happen. It will always happen when we least expect it, whether we like it or not."

He lifts his head and places a small kiss on the side of her head.

"But know that I will be there with you every step of the way."

He turns her around to face him and holds her chin to make her look up at him.

"No matter how difficult it gets, I will be here. Wherever your feet take you, I am right behind you. I will follow in your footprints."

He meant every word. He will let her lead, and he will follow her. When life gets too hard, and she feels like she is going to fall, he will be there ready to pick her up. He will give her his strength.

Yue Ling gazes up at the man in front of her. The man, who others call cold-blooded, is feared by many. Yet, in front of her, he was just a man who showed her nothing but love and respect.

She nods her head at his words and takes another breath to steady her mind.

"We should get going. We have a lot to do until the meeting time tonight."

Lu Tian was reluctant to let her go, but knowing he could not change her mind once it was made up, he could only agree.

As they changed clothes and headed downstairs, Lu Tian kissed his wife goodbye before he and Xu Long left the house to meet with Wolf Team.

Yue Ling walked into the living room, finding Liu Shan already sitting on the couch.

"Is everything ready?"

She asks as she takes a seat on the other couch, and he looks up from behind his laptop.

"Everything is ready. Lin Hui is picking up the money before coming here."

Yue Ling nods her head as her phone rings. She looks at the screen and sees that it was Gui Tian Lan calling.

She didn’t hesitate to answer the call and put it on speaker.

"This is Yue Ling. You’re on speaker."

["Boss, we have eyes on the building. Gui Zhongmin and Qi Li are still inside. They are impersonating Hung Woo’s men. Everyone is ready in position."]

Yue Ling made a hm sound. She was thankful for her team, especially Qi Li and Gui Zhong Min. They could have easily left her brother until it was time, but they chose to stay inside on their own.

That meant that if things went south, the two men were close enough to reach her brother.

"Make sure you guys keep your eyes on them, too. They are just as important as my brother."

["Understood."]

The call ends, and Yue Ling looks at the time on her screen, which reads 9 am. She lets out a sigh and sends a message to her grandfather. She wanted him to leave everything to her.

Liu Shan looks at her with a slight frown on his face. He didn’t see what she sent, but he knew from a glance that Hung Woo and his men were in deep trouble.

He has seen her in action plenty of times, and when her killer instinct is activated, he can’t help but pity those on the receiving end.

As the boss and assistant go over the plan again, Lin Hui soon arrives with the money.

Before they knew it, it was 6 PM, and they left to meet Lu Tian and his team.

It took almost 2 hours before Yue Ling, Liu Shan, and Lin Hui arrived, just 10 miles near the outskirts of Retro. There, they met with Lu Tian and his men. Each person is in combat gear and weapons ready.

Yue Ling stepped out of the car just as the crunching sound of footsteps in the snow approached her. She looks up to see Lu Tian walking up to her. He was no longer wearing the clothes he had on when he left the house. Now, he was wearing the same combat gear as Wolf Team.

He stops in front of her and pulls her into a tight hug. He nuzzles the side of her neck, inhaling her scent that fills his insides with warmth and comfort.

"I don’t want you to go in alone..."

His arms tighten more around her as his words continue in a hoarse voice.

"But I know I can’t stop you."

He pulls away, but does not let her go.

"I swear by it, if I sense something is off, I’m not going to sit back and wait."

Yue Ling gives him a faint smile and touches his cheek as he subconsciously leans into her palm. Her bluish-green eyes search his before she gives him a small nod.

"Then I’m counting on you."

Her words fell, and she tiptoed a little to kiss him on the lips before stepping away from him.

She turns to Liu Shan and gives her assistant a nod. He quickly walks up to her and hands her the car keys.

"The money is in the trunk. I have placed a tracker in one of the trunk headlights in case things go south."

Yue Ling thanks him and looks at Lu Tian.

"Shan and Hui will join your team. The others are on standby at the location where Jingxu is being held. If anything goes wrong, they will be the first to get to him."

She stares at the man holding her heart for a long second before turning away. She walks to the car and gets inside.

Her expression remained unreadable as she started the car and drove away in the direction of Quaint Alley.

Watching her car disappear further from view, Lu Tian couldn’t look away. His fists clenched tightly at his sides, knowing that his wife was walking into danger and there was nothing he could do but watch from the side.

His eyes remain in the direction his wife had gone, and he takes a deep breath.

He turns around to face Liu Shan, Xu Long, Lin Hui, and Wolf Team.

"Let’s go."

Everyone nods and gets into their vehicles. Not needing further instructions, they drive in different directions to get to their assigned locations.

In one of the vehicles, Lu Tian sat in the passenger seat, with Xu Long at the wheel and Liu Shan and Lin Hui in the back.

Noticing the tension building in the car, Liu Shan couldn’t help but sigh. He could feel the dangerous energy emitting from Lu Tian, and he couldn’t blame the man.

However, trusting his boss, he decides to ease the tension.

"Don’t worry, Mr. Lu. My boss will be fine. She may not look like it, but she is a very strong woman. She has walked into danger alone and returned without a scratch."

Lin Hui nods his head in agreement and rests his head on the backseat headrest.

"Remember, she wiped out Ghost Gang, and let’s not forget Chu Li Xiang. Nether escaped her wrath."

Lu Tian’s eyes remained on the road despite hearing the two men. He agreed with them, and despite knowing his wife is a strong woman, he needed to show her that she can trust him.

If things don’t turn out as planned, he needs her to know that she has him to back her up. That she is not alone and knows that he is always there, whether it is standing next to her or on the side watching.

He is prepared to take on the world for her.
