Chapter 481: Suicide Skill
Chapter 481: Suicide Skill
"Can the floor endure another test?" Adyr’s voice was calm as he pointed out the tiny cracks that were spreading like thin veins along the walls.
They were mostly surface level, as if only the outer layer of plaster had peeled away in places. Even so, he wasn’t sure if the building could handle another quake like that.
"No worries, just allow us a minute to prepare the room." The head researcher replied immediately, almost too quickly. It felt like he didn’t care what happened to the building itself and only wanted to see more data appear on his screen.
Then he tapped a few times on the screen of his tablet to open the door of the room.
A few sharp clicks and mechanical sounds came from the door. Then, with a heavy, echoing thud, the thick door pushed open a crack and suddenly began sucking air from the corridor, drawing in fresh air from outside to replace the burned, stale air inside and balance the pressure again.
The suction was too intense, like the door of a plane flying at high altitude had been opened.
The researchers struggled to stay on their feet on the smooth floor, doing their best not to be pulled inside all at once.
But thanks to Adyr and the 3 Lunari standing there like pillars fused to the ground, not even slightly shifting under the pull of the suction, the researchers could cling to them and anchor themselves in place.
Only Rhys among the mortals could remain standing on his own, bracing his feet and shoulders against the pull. Henry stood beside him, gripping his shoulders tightly, enduring thanks to his support.
The equalization of the pressure inside the room took only 3 seconds. Afterward, the suction ceased in a faint hiss, making all the researchers let out a deep breath of relief, tension easing from their bodies one by one.
"I think we should add some air ducts to solve the pressure problem." The head researcher and others quickly started taking notes, their pens and fingers moving in a rush. Then they opened the door fully to check inside.
Inside, the room wasn’t as hot as one would expect after such a blast. Instead, it was even cooler than before, with a faint chill lingering in the air.
The walls looked the same as before; only the matte gold color seemed slightly darker, as if it had absorbed and trapped the extreme heat, but within seconds it returned to its original tone and luster. The same matte gold coating still covered the entire room in an even, continuous layer, as if the previous explosion had never happened at all.
The researchers, after inspecting everything carefully and quickly noting their observations on their notebooks or tablets, left the room in small groups, murmuring to each other under their breath.
After finishing their brief check of the room and the data they had collected, the head researcher spoke up. "My Lord, you can go inside now."
Adyr nodded as he stepped inside. He scanned everything with his own eyes, looking for any damage left from the previous impact, but he couldn’t spot even a hairline crack.
They are really good at this. He thought to himself how impressive the researchers were for creating a structure strong enough to handle an attack from a Titled Practitioner, which was better than all Outer Region structures.
Zephan, who was also observing the inside from the doorway, looked quite shocked. He glanced between the pristine room and the white-coated researchers waiting beside him, feeling his respect for them steadily rise like a tide.
If any mortal in the Lunari kingdom were to craft this kind of room, the whole nation would declare that person the genius of the millennium. They would even be respected and well-regarded by the Practitioners themselves.
Adyr, after finishing his inspection of the room and deeming it safe to proceed, turned his head slightly and called out toward the corridor. "You can close the door."
Everyone, for a moment, was taken aback by his words. The head researcher spoke in a respectful tone, his voice tightening. "My Lord, I think it’s not quite safe that way."
He didn’t know what kind of skill Adyr wanted to test. Whatever it was, it had to be at least equal to or close to a 20 kt explosion, so leaving him sealed inside with that kind of power felt like more than just risky. It felt outright reckless.
Adyr waved his hand dismissively, still calm and with the same look on his face. "My skill is not like Silverlight’s with a time delay; it’s an instant effect."
Zephan’s attack was carried out by charging his silver spear and then letting it detonate a few seconds later once it was fully charged. That allowed him to control the timing and avoid being affected by his own attack.
But Adyr’s was an instant type, even a suicide type. As soon as he used the last skill of the combo, it would trigger immediately, making it impossible for him to escape from it by normal means.
Adyr, seeing them still hesitant, laughed softly. "Just close the door and count to 10. Don’t worry about me, I have my own tricks."
After receiving the command a second time, the head researcher had no choice but to obey. Even though he was hesitant and his throat had gone dry, he tapped the screen of the tablet in his hand, sealing the heavy door with another deep metallic thud.
At the same time, Henry was already tapping the screen of his wrist device with quick, urgent motions, sending a message to evacuate the entire building.
Then they all started to count backward from 10 in their minds, some unconsciously moving their lips. They waited for the kind of blast that would reveal what the current Human peak was capable of.
And then, when the count in their minds hit zero, all their hearts shuddered along with the building around them. A shared jolt ran through every chest.
The closed room shook violently, its columns connecting it to the building cracking rapidly with sharp, splintering sounds.
The floor trembled with a fierce quake. The broken walls started to fall apart, and pieces of stone fell to the ground, making a lot of dust.
The fluorescent lights flickered once in a sickly glow and then went out completely, plunging the entire corridor into heavy darkness.
Zephan’s lightning armor was the only light source left for them. The pale glow of electricity wrapped his body, allowing them to see their surroundings.
"Shield them." Silverlight calmly ordered his Elders, his eyes tracking the spreading damage as it threatened to go out of control.
He didn’t know how sturdy the bodies of these non-Practitioner Humans were. Even so, he wouldn’t allow their lives to be put at risk while he was present, not when they were under his watch.
The two Elders moved faster than the collapsing ceiling. They drew their swords from their Sanctuaries in a flash and sheltered the researchers from the falling debris, cleaving apart every stone large enough to injure them with a speed no eye in that corridor could follow.
