Chapter 3973: Heading To The Records Division

Lin Mu understood the situation.

The Wild Peak had realized that continuing to confront the Law Division openly would eventually cause more of their own people to be punished. Their anger remained, though they had been forced to restrain themselves.

"They haven’t given up," Lin Mu murmured as that was reassuring.

He had worried that they might eventually assume Little Bull was dead. Instead, they were still searching. Lin Mu listened for several more minutes as the elders discussed various possibilities, including whether Little Bull might have been transferred to another prison without their knowledge.

They had already investigated several possibilities and found nothing. One elder suggested contacting the higher authorities again but another immediately dismissed the idea.

"We already did. There has been no response." The irritation in his voice was obvious.

Lin Mu frowned as that was becoming more suspicious with every piece of information. The Wild Peak had appealed but the Vault Division was using the Law Division to suppress their movements.

It was clear that someone was definitely protecting the situation. Lin Mu eventually withdrew his immortal sense as he had learned enough for now. The Wild Peak was under pressure, though it was still functioning.

The elders were worried, angry and frustrated, yet there was no immediate threat of collapse. That meant Lin Mu could afford to take his time. He phased through the wall and emerged outside the main hall.

He looked toward the distant regions of the sect.

"Now for the records." That was his next priority.

The Heavenly Stream Guardian Sect had existed for an enormous period of time. Its records would contain far more information than Zhenyu’s personal notes. If the ancient elder had mentioned the Hopeful Star Pavilion, the current sect might have records regarding its descendants, affiliated families or surviving influence.

More importantly, Lin Mu wanted to know whether the name Deng Siqi appeared anywhere.

If he could confirm that the Deng Siqi mentioned by Zhenyu was the same person associated with the title of Heavenly Stream Immortal Daoist, then an enormous piece of the puzzle would fall into place.

Lin Mu also needed to investigate Zhenyu himself as the records might contain his name. Perhaps there were portraits, perhaps there were descriptions of his appearance, perhaps there were records regarding his cultivation technique and perhaps the sect had long ago declared him dead.

Any of those outcomes could be useful.

If the sect believed Zhenyu had died, Lin Mu would need a story explaining how he survived. If the sect believed Zhenyu had disappeared, his return would become considerably easier to explain.

And if there were records stating that he had entered the Mad Demon Depths, Lin Mu would have an even stronger foundation for his identity. Lin Mu looked toward the central region of the Inner Court.

The records of a sect as ancient as the Heavenly Stream Guardian Sect would never be stored in a simple library. There would be restrictions, permissions and several levels of access.

Fortunately, Lin Mu had just spent several days reading Zhenyu’s memories.

He knew the sect from an older era. He knew the principles behind many of its formations. He knew several forgotten methods of bypassing restrictions. And Zhenyu had specifically recorded several formation bypass techniques in his jade token.

Lin Mu smiled. "Let’s see how much of the old man’s knowledge is still useful."

He stepped into the air and his figure rose silently above the Wild Peak before accelerating toward the central regions of the Inner Court.

He moved through the skies at a steady pace, occasionally slowing down whenever he passed through a particularly dense cluster of buildings or a region protected by stronger formations.

There was little reason for him to attract unnecessary attention. He already possessed an identity that could withstand casual observation, and the Silver Mirage Circlet had done an excellent job of completing the illusion.

The clothes created by the circlet were exactly that of Junior Elder Zhenyu.

His body remained Lin Mu’s own, of course, though the minute difference in build could actually work in his favor. Zhenyu had been a powerful body cultivator, and his old appearance in the recording had been enormous.

Lin Mu’s current physique could easily be explained as a consequence of the inheritance he had obtained during his disappearance. His robes were also appropriate, his jade token was genuine, and the aura he carried had been adjusted to match what he imagined Zhenyu’s presence would feel like after countless years.

There were still countless details that needed to be handled carefully and Lin Mu knew that. The more time he spent inside the sect, the more likely it became that someone who knew the ancient Zhenyu personally would appear.

A casual encounter with an ordinary disciple was easy enough. Even an elder who had heard the name might only be curious. Meeting someone who had actually interacted with Zhenyu before he disappeared would be an entirely different matter.

Though the chances of that were still quite low, as someone that old would probably be one of the ancestors of the sect. And Lin Mu certainly did not think that he’d come across an ancestor while on a walk.

For now, Lin Mu had decided that the Records Division would be his first stop as there were plenty of records throughout the sect. The Law and Order Division naturally maintained records concerning criminals, punishments, investigations and disciplinary cases.

The Administrative Division maintained records involving resources, assignments, personnel and the operation of the various departments. The Vault Division would certainly have its own archives as well.

Those places, however, had specific purposes and Lin Mu was searching for history or more accurately a hundred thousand years of history. That kind of information had to be preserved somewhere.

The Records Division existed precisely for that reason.

Information from the various divisions of the Inner Court were eventually compiled and archived there. Important events, appointments, deaths, changes in authority, construction projects, major battles, ancient records and countless other pieces of information would eventually find their way into its archives.

There was a possibility that some information had already been transferred to the Core Court. Lin Mu considered that especially likely for matters concerning extremely old figures or events of significant importance.
