Chapter 2405 - 2406: Location of the Master Control Node
Chapter 2405: Chapter 2406: Location of the Master Control Node
Reynaud’s permissions were not sealed, and he successfully opened the exhibition room on the third floor.
After entering the exhibition room, Nis quickly moved among the exhibits, searching for his desired target as before.
Kanter said through the Mind Ribbon, "Is Toby there?"
After a few seconds of silence, an emotionless hum came through the Mind Ribbon.
Kanter: "You can wake Angel now and tell him we’ve arrived at the exhibition room."
A few seconds later, Angel’s voice came through the Mind Ribbon: "I’m here."
Upon hearing Angel’s voice, Kanter began to wander among the exhibits with the Authority Eye: "You should pick something too, you might find something suitable for you."
If it were before, Angel would certainly refuse. But after learning about organs that do not participate in internal circulation, he developed some ideas about the organs here.
For this reason, when Kanter said to call him to the exhibition room later at the control node, Angel did not refuse.
Kanter moved quickly because there were not many organs in the exhibition room that did not participate in internal circulation, and he could basically see them all at a glance.
"How about this? The dorsal exoskeleton of the Eight-Legged Osteoarachnid." Kanter stopped in front of a metal platform, within which a container held a segment of pure white bone, covered with cave-like black holes, features identifying its origin.
Angel saw this piece of bone through the Authority Eye.
He remembered reading about the Eight-Legged Osteoarachnid in "Where is the Magical Beast", which was also known as the "Bone Whip Spider Queen".
"Is this exoskeleton its bone whip?" Angel asked.
Kanter exclaimed, "Oh? You know it? I thought you wouldn’t recognize it. It’s quite rare in the Southern Domain now, and not many know it’s a bone whip."
"Although it’s hard to determine what traits might be gained after transplanting this exoskeleton, based on my understanding, it has very strong tenacity, ductility, and plasticity. It can be long or short, long for whipping, short for binding. In a sense, you can completely treat it as your third hand, and it’s even more flexible than a real hand."
Kanter obviously knew a lot about the Eight-Legged Osteoarachnid, and his explanation was professional. But after hearing it, Angel was not very interested in the exoskeleton of this Eight-Legged Osteoarachnid.
It’s not that he was biased against whips, but because he had a very similar ability—the Phantom Limb.
With the Phantom Limb, Angel could achieve the same effect as this exoskeleton, even better. The Phantom Limb is controlled by the mind, and as long as Angel’s energy is sufficient, the number and length of Phantom Limbs are completely unrestricted.
Since there was a better alternative, Angel naturally looked down upon this exoskeleton.
Of course, the exoskeleton of the Eight-Legged Osteoarachnid does have advantages over the Phantom Limb, such as containing a Soul Arms within.
But what specifically this Soul Arms was remained unknown.
Furthermore, if Angel were to transplant an organ just for its Soul Arms, it seemed a bit insensible. He hoped that even without the Soul Arms, this organ could still provide some help to him.
Angel shared his thoughts with Kanter.
Kanter said nothing after hearing this and continued searching for the next organ that didn’t participate in internal circulation.
At this moment, on the other side, Nis said, "I have five Dread Demon’s nails here, want to try them?"
Dread Demons are a type of Abyssal Demon, relatively weak in power, yet the most feared demon among Abyssal Natives, without exception. Because they look too much like humans, their demon horns are very small and can be completely hidden with hats and hair, blending into the natives’ teams. Plus, Dread Demons love eating native flesh; basically, if one infiltrates a town of Abyssal Natives, it won’t be long before they’re all eaten up.
Angel hadn’t encountered any Dread Demons when he went to the Abyss, but he had heard that they were adept at disguise and learning, and naturally capable of manipulating human hearts, almost inherently possessing the highest level of Art of Fear.
If someone really wanted to transplant a Dread Demon’s organ, skin or internal organs would be a better choice because to perform a technique similar to Art of Fear, the organ must participate in the internal circulation, even the cranial circulation.
As for the Dread Demon’s nails... Angel hadn’t heard of any use for them.
Was he just uninformed?
Angel silently looked to Kanter, hoping the knowledgeable Kanter might have some explanation.
Kanter was silent for a few seconds, then shook his head at Angel: "Not much point, perhaps just to make your nails a bit sharper?"
Sharper nails aren’t bad, but it’s certainly more of an enhancement for close combat, and relatively more suited for bloodline wizards. However, if a bloodline wizard were really to transplant an organ, wouldn’t they choose the corresponding arm instead of nails?
Overall, these nails were essentially worthless.
If the Soul Arms inside the nails were powerful, they might add some value back, yet currently, the type of Soul Arms inside couldn’t be determined. So... Angel chose to pass; he wasn’t interested in gambling.
Seeing Angel pass, Nis said nothing more, because if he were in Angel’s position, he would also pass on these nails. He stopped discussing the nails and instead changed the topic, asking, "By the way, Angel, how’s your research going? Any news on the main control node?"
Nis’s question caused Kanter to pause slightly, and Reynaud stood still, listening intently. He also wanted to know where the experiment lab’s main control node was.
Angel: "Currently still filtering coordinates, but I can confirm that the main control node is not on the second or third floor."
Nis: "So that means the main control node is on the fourth or fifth floor?"
Angel: "There’s a possibility, but there are other possibilities too, such as the lab having a certain mezzanine, or the main control node being on... the first floor."
"A mezzanine or the first floor? Is that really possible?" Nis was still somewhat skeptical.
Angel: "Finding the main control node immediately is not easy, but ruling out which floor it’s on is straightforward. Give me a few more minutes, and I should be able to finish ruling it out."
Nis and the others took only a few minutes to reach the exhibition room from the control nodes on the third floor, so if Angel was to determine which floor the main control node was on, it indeed wouldn’t take too long.
Nis: "Then we’ll await your good news. Hopefully, we can find the main control node before running into others, to avoid any hindrance."
They continued to roam in the exhibition room.
Another two minutes passed, and Angel still hadn’t found anything he liked, mainly because non-internal circulation organs weren’t mainstream, they were relatively weaker, and their quantity was also relatively limited.
The exoskeleton of the Eight-Legged Osteoarachnid they saw earlier was actually the strongest among the lot.
"Time is short; in at most a minute, the limits on this floor will be lifted," Angel said.
Before the time limit was up, Nis sighed, casually picked two items, and hurried away. As for Angel, he had given up on the third floor’s exhibition room, thinking perhaps the deeper layers of the experiment lab might have the organ he needed.
Once everyone left the exhibition room, Angel greeted them and buried himself in studying the Magical Energy Array to find the main control node’s position through the three control nodes.
Nis and Kanter proceeded to venture deeper into the lab.
Under Reynaud’s guidance, they quickly found the entrance to the fourth floor, still a narrow corridor, suggesting it’s an external corridor. They need to enter it, then the outside rotary arm will move the corridor to the entrance of the fourth floor.
Nis didn’t immediately enter the corridor, because until now, they hadn’t really encountered researchers from inside the laboratory.
According to Reynaud’s description of the laboratory’s internal layering, the fifth floor is the private domain of the first three sequences, researchers are basically unlikely to go there.
With no sight of researchers on the first three floors, the likelihood of them being on the fourth floor is the highest.
So, to avoid alerting the enemy, Nis decided to wait and see if Angel discovered anything before making a decision.
Ten more minutes passed quickly, after experiencing an onslaught of a wave of Law, Angel’s voice finally came through the Mind Ribbon: "I just conducted a check on the fourth and fifth floors and found that all the main trunk magic patterns of the Magical Energy Array don’t show any signs of extending downwards. Only non-core magic patterns, like those related to information transmission blocks, show tendencies of extending towards the fourth and fifth floors."
Nis: "What does this mean?"
Kanter answered Nis’s question on Angel’s behalf: "It means the main control node isn’t on the fourth or fifth floors."
Nis: "Is it really on the first floor?"
Angel: "The probability is high, comparing the sub-control nodes on the second and third floors, I’ve found quite a few main trunk magic patterns on the first floor."
Pausing briefly, Angel’s tone noticeably rose: "If it’s really on the first floor, the time to find the main control node will be greatly reduced."
Because Angel is currently on the first floor, he understands the magic patterns of the first floor better than other floors, allowing him to quickly pinpoint the locations of the main trunk magic patterns. On other floors, Angel would either have to come down personally or study through the Authority Eye, ultimately slower.
"I will now follow the main trunk magic patterns on the first floor to see if I can pinpoint the location of the main control node." Angel was a man of action and immediately prepared to shield the Mind Ribbon and began his search.
"Wait." Nis stopped Angel: "Are you sure our information hasn’t been passed along?"
Nis worried that their information might have been transmitted through the Magical Energy Array to the researchers here. If that were the case, stepping into this external corridor could lead to them being pinpointed, and not to mention going downstairs, the external corridor might be disconnected, burying them in the ground.
Being buried in the ground is actually considered a relatively good outcome; if it’s the Magical Energy Array backlash, that’s the most terrifying outcome.
Angel: "At least for now, there’s no sign of your information being transmitted in the Magical Energy Array."
"However, considering the time, we’ve been in the laboratory for quite a while. Number 03 might have already guessed our whereabouts."
Guessing our whereabouts isn’t a big deal; the only worry is whether Number 03 has any means to contact internal personnel. If she has established contact, then the situation Nis worries about could very likely occur.
Kanter: "Wizard Ferro hasn’t activated what I left him yet, which means Number 03 hasn’t come out of the Flame Law Field, so, even if she has a way to transmit information, currently nothing has been transmitted yet."
"But Angel is right, Number 03 should be suspicious now; she probably won’t take long before leaving the Mechanist Core. At that point, we must leave the laboratory quickly."
Number 03 encouraged them to enter the laboratory, indicating that she might have arranged something inside the laboratory, and even if there are no arrangements, the Magical Energy Array backlash is terrifying.
Therefore, the time left for them is running out.
Kanter: "Angel, continue searching for the main control node. Once it is found, many follow-up actions will be easier. If the main control node isn’t found, once Number 03 comes out, we’ll need to use means to leave."
Angel: "Okay, I’ll hurry."
After speaking, Angel stopped talking and directly entered research mode.
Nis and Kanter stepped into the narrow corridor, heading towards the fourth floor entrance.
...
While everyone was acting separately inside the laboratory, outside, Number 03 was caught in a dilemma.
It had been nearly over an hour.
Through the water mirror, she only saw Ferro boasting outside, while Sanders and others were completely unseen.
Being absent for so long, not even a sound, made her uneasy.
Earlier, she thought Sanders and others wouldn’t dare break into the laboratory, after all, there was a Magical Energy Array inside and unless aided by a master well-versed in the art of magic patterns, it would be impossible to enter quietly.
But now she’s uncertain; they’ve been gone so long, might they have really entered the laboratory?
Perhaps Nis or Sanders has an understanding of magic patterns? Or perhaps they have other means to bypass the Magical Energy Array... like a Mysterious Object?
If that’s the case, she needs to leave the Mechanist Core quickly, or many things can’t be done.
Especially the largest mechanism in the laboratory, she must leave the Mechanist Core, contact personnel inside the laboratory, and join forces from both inside and outside to activate it.
Then even Sanders would... well, she couldn’t kill him, but she wouldn’t be defenseless.
Moreover, once that mechanism is activated, when others return, under their joint effort, the chance of capturing Sanders would be very high.
However, the premise of all this is that they entered the laboratory and... she leaves now.
She could certainly leave now, but her worry was whether she might be overthinking, and whether Sanders and others hadn’t entered the laboratory, just lying in ambush at the depths of the Mist, waiting for her to fall into their trap.
Should she leave the Mechanist Core?
Or should she wait until everyone returns and then join forces against the enemy?
Number 03 attempted to engage Ferro in conversation through the water mirror to probe for news about Sanders and others. But Ferro was clever, revealing little, occasionally sharing information of dubious authenticity, seemingly just trying to lure her out.
If it was indeed a lure for her to leave the Mechanist Core, it implies Sanders and others are lying in wait nearby.
At this moment, Number 03 was standing at a crossroads, where her fate would be decided, and so would her ability to fulfill Seele’s legacy.
While agonizing, Number 03 gazed at the bottle in her hand.
The core of the fruit continuously emitted magic power, tempting her to swallow it.
Perhaps... she should try going out once? If Sanders is indeed lying in ambush outside, at worst, she’d swallow it.
But once she swallows it, even if she manages to deal with Sanders, the consequences for herself would be hard to predict.
Staring at the core, Number 03 gulped, and her mind grew increasingly conflicted.
