Chapter 1267 - Taming the Old World - Shadow Dragons - 14
The mist took a considerable amount of time to settle after the massive explosion. And when it finally did, the air was calmer but remained incredibly dense.
The black smoke continuously generated by the raging fire kept the atmosphere heavy, opaque, and nearly impossible to see through.
The four of them (Ren, Luna, Liora and Larissa) were protected by Larissa's Lynx and Luna's Tiger. Their two beasts manipulated the air currents whenever the toxic, acidic smoke drifted too close, safely pushing the hazard away from their lungs.
Those same beasts lent their elemental control directly to the girls. Working in perfect tandem with Ren, they projected a synchronized potent pulse of wind that swept the haze back just enough to reveal the dragon's current state.
They could finally see the creature clearly.
It was devastated.
The lower half of its head was torn to pieces. It was missing a wing, and from its neck all the way down to its belly, the concentrated beam and subsequent explosion had carved deep, horrific trenches that exposed the dragon's internal anatomy. The freezing energy had essentially frozen time; the black dragon's prodigious regeneration, the very trait that made the beast so deeply feared, was completely inert.
The ice had stopped the healing process dead in its tracks…

Ren did not waste a single second, already circulating a fresh surge of energy.
He ordered a new barrage of Light mana to secure the victory before the guardian could figure out a way to break out of its icy prison and recover.
But the darkness reacted first, moving almost instantly.
The burning swamp, that liquid shadow acting as raw fuel, began to rush into a massive vortex around the fallen dragon right where its body touched the heavy water polluted ground. Heavy viscous shadows swirled and converged on the creature, desperately trying to fill in the missing chunks of flesh and restore what the blast had blown away.
Ren gritted his teeth and accelerated his own mana flow. He did not want to push his body too far, but sometimes a small amount of pain in the present was necessary to prevent a massive amount of suffering in the near future.
If they allowed the beast to recover its body and attack again even if not with all of its strength, they would be forced to win a grueling battle of power attrition all over again.
There was a very good reason these specific guardians were considered the most resilient entities in existence. They did not merely regenerate naturally with their already high regeneration stats; they possessed the capacity to even reclaim ambient energy, stronger at day and night respectively.
In this specific case they waited for the day thankfully, yet the beast was drawing upon the already surrounding darkness, utilizing years of accumulated shadow pooling in what appeared to be a mundane swamp, and weaponizing it all to rebuild its physical form.
But Ren had no intention of letting the monster optimize its final trump card.
He was not going to wait around to see what a shadow dragon could accomplish after reabsorbing the entirety of its dark domain.
He simply let his beam of Light do the talking once more…
♢♢♢♢
The dragon was just beginning to thaw as the burning liquid shadow actively melted the frost and filled its deep wounds back to normal at insane speed.
But that was exactly when Selphira intervened.
She fused and concentrated a staggering amount of power to ensure her frost did not lose ground to the burning fuel, firmly reinforcing the deep freeze the vortex was actively trying to dismantle.
Liu relayed a Selphira's message directly into Ren's ear, advising him not to slow his pace for a single moment until the battle was definitively won. She promised to maintain the ice so he could finish the execution with everything he had.
With the dragon attempting to siphon every ounce of available energy into a final vortex, and the ice audibly cracking under that immense pressure, Ren struck the half-destroyed head again.
The concentrated beam immediately began to tear it apart. Light and freezing energy worked seamlessly in tandem, slightly supporting Selphira's overarching goal: denying the dragon any chance to regain its mobility and ending the threat permanently.
The vortex stubbornly continued to feed the beast.
It actively negated the crippling effects of the cold and replenished the viscous armor with dense shadows and raging flames, fighting off death with every tool its nature provided. Despite the overwhelming assault, the dragon's head finally broke free from the ice as it absorbed the swirling dark mass.
Yet it did not earn a single moment of freedom.
Before the guardian could capitalize on its newly recovered mobility to use its breath attack, the searing beam of light obliterated another vital internal section of its skull, completely wiping out the left side and its eye. The regenerative power and sheer resilience of the black dragon were genuinely incredible (even now, with its head virtually annihilated, it remained standing and tried to fight back), but it was a battle that was already lost.
When it came to elemental mana, light and darkness naturally canceled each other out.
And Ren's concentrated beam of light was flawlessly unraveling the shadow dragon's very existence…
For every ten drops of darkness the vortex pumped back into the creature, the light beam systematically erased eleven. The beast was rebuilding and disintegrating simultaneously, trapped in a fatal stalemate that was essentially a slow defeat leading to only one possible conclusion.
Following an intense energetic exchange that slowly claimed more and more ground, Ren's Hydra finally eradicated the monster's brain.
And with the brain gone, the vortex that stubbornly insisted on healing it (alongside the ruined body that simply refused to fall) finally lost all cohesion. They exploded outward one last time, unleashing a final detonation of shadow and fire that scattered harmlessly into the static inferno of flames and dark smoke blanketing the front of the mountain.
The dragon had fallen.
Finally…
But Ren did not stop.
He directed the beam straight into the lifeless corpse, carving the fatal wound even deeper, cutting through the thick flesh until he reached the core.
