Chapter 1270 - Taming the Old World - Shadow Dragons - Reinforcements - 3
Chapter 1270 - Taming the Old World - Shadow Dragons - Reinforcements - 3
Back in the capital, Victor was fully in his element.
He crushed a Platinum beast creeping dangerously close to the masonry using a massive stone meteor that cleaved the creature in half, dropping the boulder from the sky with a crushing weight no beast below Diamond rank could ever hope to withstand.
His aerial squad executed similar tactics from the clouds, carrying heavy hitters who rained down elemental destruction, creating a relentless storm of damage upon the corruption's vanguard.
The high-tier enemy forces were creeping perilously close to the two hundred mark.
It was Arturo's dreaded threshold... That specific number that flipped the defensive mathematics against them.
But Victor did not panic.
He placed his unwavering trust in the tamers holding the ground, just as much as he trusted those in the sky.
From his high vantage point, the towering water barriers conjured by Ren's parents were clearly visible.
They were massive, translucent, and surprisingly resilient against the minor elemental bombardments raining down from the countless beasts. Reed and Fern, the two humble cooks Victor had originally met as simple villagers needing protection for the sake of keeping a VIP like Ren happy, were now holding an entire section of the inner wall. Utilizing their fused water and wood beasts, they absorbed volley after volley without yielding an inch.
And they were far from the only ones holding the line.
Although the capital lacked a high concentration of famous elites right now, since the biggest names were busy bleeding in the north and south, there were still hundreds of Gold 2 and Gold 3 tamers stationed in every sector. Standing together as a unified army, they kept the apocalypse at bay.
The true strength of the city did not rest only on the shoulders of a few chosen heroes.
It also relied on sheer volume, flawless coordination, and hundreds of determined individuals punching well above their weight class thanks to the premium resources Ren had circulated throughout the city and a bit more in his territory.
The Roran squad, also Mira, Sora, Klein, Taro, and Anuar stood right there, seamlessly integrated into that communal defense system.
Even though Taro and Anuar were missing their friend, as Li was currently supporting Ren "in heart" while frozen solid inside a crystal, the two had adapted flawlessly to the siege. Fighting alongside the regular soldiers, they refused to let a single enemy spell breach the city or strike a defender who lacked the proper elemental advantage.
Wherever a fire mutant attacked, a water tamer answered. Where a water hit tried to push forward, a wood or wind tamer held the ground. It was a well-oiled machine of elemental counters, forged through years of training side by side.
This precise tactical harmony was exactly how a Gold 3 defender could withstand a Platinum-tier assault, exploiting elemental weaknesses while also relying on the fact that these specific mutants possessed weaker elemental outputs than their rank suggested, heavily dependent on the vortex of corrupted runes swirling around them.

Victor grinned, launching another crushing impact into the fray.
The mutants appeared to be preparing for something far more drastic. He noticed a massive accumulation forming in their ranks, recognizing a tactical pattern he had learned the hard way. They were gearing up for a massive charge, a highly concentrated wave of raw physical power designed to shatter the wall in a single, definitive push.
Victor stayed hyper-alert.
And a small part of him, the dark corner of his mind he would never confess out loud, almost wished they would do it.
Because if they forced him to trigger his fusion and dive directly into the dirt to control a massive wave with towering spikes of sharpened rock, if they compelled him to plunge into the heart of the chaos and fight hand-to-hand against a tide of monsters trying to rip his throat out... they would be handing him exactly the kind of battle he craved. It would be intense, bloody, and fraught with lethal risk. It was the exact caliber of combat that made a true warrior feel alive.
"Come on," he muttered to himself, watching the mutant formation swell. "If you are going to do it, just do it."
He did not want them to attack the wall.
Yet he desperately wanted the fight.
That inherent contradiction, that raw hunger for battle coexisting alongside his solemn duty to protect his home, was exactly what made Victor who he was. And it was what made him so incredibly lethal on a battlefield.
♢♢♢♢
Arturo surveyed the battlefield…
The enemy numbers had officially surpassed two hundred.
That was the exact figure he had established as their maximum safe threshold; now that they had crossed it, the cold mathematics were beginning to twist against them.
The healers were already under pressure, treating the wounded without a single moment of rest. This strain was not only due to the mutants now landing blows, as their individual strikes were manageable, but rather something far more insidious. The beasts appeared to possess a limitless supply of stamina. As long as the corrupted runes swirled around them, they could continuously siphon power from the external network, attacking without fatigue and maintaining a relentless siege.
A human biological-mana system naturally wore down over time. These creatures did not, as they operated comfortably at a lower energetic baseline than their actual rank suggested, heavily subsidized by that external ether.
Arturo's greatest fear was that the entire horde would launch a synchronized charge.
However, a small tactical advantage revealed itself.
The influx of mutant reinforcements had stopped just past that two-hundred mark. The fastest Vanguard scouts, those dedicated exclusively to aerial observation and reporting rather than direct combat, transmitted that small pockets of Platinum predators were still feeding in the distant rings.
It represented roughly the final ten percent of the local population, yet they showed no signs of migrating toward the capital.
Selthia, for all her recent miscalculations, had not been foolish enough to completely drain her high-tier reserves. She was keeping a fraction held back just in case and to keep making more strong mutants.
Yet ironically, that exact hesitation worked just enough in the city's favor.
It meant the enemy volume would not continue to multiply here for now. Two hundred and change was the definitive ceiling, not merely another step in an endless climb. The capital was barely holding the line, with the medical staff pushed and the frontline defenders drained, but they were holding. Enduring a siege against a fixed number was a far more realistic goal than trying to survive a bottomless tide.
"The flow has stopped," Arturo murmured, verifying the scout reports. "Thanks to whatever logic remains inside her head, the march has stopped."
