Chapter 1274 - Taming the Old World - Shadow Dragons - Reinforcements - 7
"IT ACTUALLY WORKS!" Finch yelled, sounding just as bewildered as everyone else. "Theodore, it works! Note it down that it works! Never mind, I will file the paperwork myself as you are busy right now, but this is definitely worth a triple promotion!"
He wasn't entirely sure how long the mouse centered disruption would hold. His legs felt like jelly, his glasses were completely fogged with cold sweat, and he possessed the combat experience of a pocket calculator.
But in a highly dramatic, incredibly noisy fashion that completely contradicted his own survival instincts, the banker and his mouse kept the golden network pulled tight.
The Platinum beast continued to thrash and shriek, completely stripped of its energy flow and unable to strike, while Finch frantically dragged Klein by the collar out of the danger zone.
"Do you see this!?" Finch screamed at the writhing mutant, thoroughly emboldened by the safe distance and the shocking reality that he wasn't dead yet. "This is exactly what happens when you mess with the financial department! If you try to permanently borrow an employee from the Glorious General, you pay the compound interest, you ugly beast! A PAINFUL compound interest!"

The collision of the two ethereal networks had generated a bizarre energetic pulse…
As Finch's golden mycelium clashed directly against the corrupted purple runes, the resulting friction sent a distinct ripple through the atmosphere. That specific resonance, born from several minor mushroom tamers synchronizing their cores all at once, achieved something entirely unexpected.
It acted as a beacon.
High above the battlefield, Wei felt it.
While circling the perimeter with Min, his senses caught that fascinating anomaly in the ethereal current. It was a frequency he instantly recognized; a structural harmony that called out to his own deep understanding of mana networks on pure instinct.
"Min, we'll bank left... There is something strange happening down there."
Min did not ask for details. He knew Wei possessed a bloodhound's nose for anything significant.
The manticore plummeted toward the streets. They arrived mere seconds later, finding the gargantuan Platinum beast staggering and rearing its head. The golden network had already crippled its senses and ruined its energy flow, making it a stationary target.
Min didn't hesitate... He dropped a concentrated vapor explosion directly onto the monster's exposed neck, blowing the creature to pieces and ending the threat instantly.
"Room service has arrived!" Min announced, hopping down from the saddle as the dust settled. "Fresh explosions on the house!"
"FINALLY!" Finch threw his hands toward the smoke-filled sky. "Reinforcements with actual firepower! Theodore, take a note that I like these two more now. Offer them a lifetime discount on all accounting commissions. We will even file their annual reports for free."
Wei, however, paid zero attention to Min or the smoking crater that used to be a Platinum mutant.
His wide, burning eyes were locked entirely on Finch, the tiny white mouse, and the fading golden lines still drifting through the air. His mind raced. A collective of low-tier mushrooms weaponized into a direct offensive measure. They had somehow converted a basic sensory and support network into a mechanism capable of inflicting genuine trauma on a Platinum-tier predator. It was exactly the kind of impossible architectural mana geometry that kept Wei awake at night.
"How did you do that?" he asked, practically tripping over the rubble to get closer. "Fungal networks do not operate like that... they are strictly for support, they don't..."
"Ah, so my colleague Wei is suddenly interested in my proprietary methods." Finch smoothed down his mustache, recovering his theatrical, bureaucratic dignity the instant his life was no longer in immediate danger.
"I would be more than happy to explain the entire theoretical framework, my good friend. However, that requires a formal consultation... My hourly rates are quite reasonable, though the initial blueprints are billed separately from the..."
"Wei, let's go." Min was already vaulting back onto the manticore. "I can sense two other sectors that need us right now."
Wei gritted his teeth. He shot the aging banker the desperate, pained look of a scientist being forcefully dragged away from the discovery of the century.
"Later," Wei promised, climbing up behind Min. "When we aren't actively under siege, you crazy old man, you are telling me everything!"
"I will be right here!" Finch shouted back as the beast took flight. "Assuming I survive, in which case my consultation fee goes up to cover Theodore's emotional damages!"

Once the flying duo vanished into the thick smog, Finch let out a ragged breath and collapsed backward. He landed hard on the shattered pavement as his legs finally gave out completely.
Theodore scurried up to his shoulder and squeaked right into his ear, sounding highly reproachful.
"I know, I know." Finch wiped a thick layer of cold sweat from his forehead with a trembling hand. "Twice... I have saved that boy's skin twice now. Nowhere in my employment contract does it list 'combat medic' or 'search and rescue'. I reviewed the document personally… Yes I used a magnifying glass."
The mouse let out another sharp squeal.
"Then why did I do it?" Finch huffed, glancing sideways at Klein. The young man was breathing steadily among the debris, exhausted but very much alive. "Because a dead client cannot pay interest, Theodore... It is basic arithmetic."
He wasn't fooling anyone, least of all the mouse.
Sitting still in a warzone terrified him far more than staying in motion, and deep down, the old accountant was significantly less cowardly than he liked to portray. Groaning in protest, Finch forced himself back onto his feet. He adjusted his crooked, foggy spectacles and began to rally the small group of young mushroom tamers once more.
Just in case he needed to weave another network.
Just in case the universe decided to continue its terrible sense of humor.
♢♢♢♢
The capital was still full of capable fighters.
They were not legendary heroes or unbeatable dual tamers. They were just decent, determined people who, much like Finch, chose to defend their home with whatever tools they had on hand. In a brutal war of attrition, every single resource counted.
