Chapter 1310 - Taming the Old World - Light Dragons - 14
Ren dissolved his active fusion, banking his Mantis sharply to the north…
The monstrous white creature took the bait instantly, trailing right behind him. It remained completely blind to the rest of the Vanguard team left at the mountain, its entire mind focused on chasing the perceived carrier of corruption across the southern sky.
When Ren reached the exact coordinates of the buried scout, he did not hesitate.
Weaving his earth and shadow mana together into a seamless grip, he locked onto the terrain directly below the Platinum mutant's hiding spot. With a sharp upward pull, he tore the ground wide open, yanking the massive beast out of its subterranean burrow.
He threw the corrupted monster onto the surface, leaving it completely exposed in the open plains right between his flying Mantis and the approaching fungal abomination.
The corrupted Platinum beast hit the dirt in a state of confusion and more importantly, its body was practically overflowing with the dark ether the golden parasite despised.
The seven hypnotic eyes of the reanimated dragon narrowed, their swirling colors hesitating for a fraction of a second as they darted between Ren and the new target. Then, the creature pivoted toward the heavier scent.
Ren had prepared a cloaking spell just in case he needed to drop off the radar to force the aggro shift, but the disparity in their respective auras made stealth unnecessary. He only carried a small trace of residual corruption lingering in the petrified veins of his left arm; the Platinum mutant, on the other hand, was a walking, breathing beacon of pure purple rot.
♢♢♢♢
The Platinum scout proved to be the perfect decoy.
While it was significantly weaker than the fungal parasite currently wielding the stolen mass of a guardian, it boasted enough high-tier armor to survive the initial impact. Above all else, it radiated the exact dark frequency the golden entity was hardwired to eradicate but also somewhat fear.
The two abominations collided.
The fungal beast threw itself at the Platinum mutant with a primal ferocity it had never directed at the human Tamers. It unleashed searing beams of concentrated light and sweeping tail strikes, finally venting its accumulated hatred against a target it recognized as a true enemy.
The Platinum scout scrambled to defend itself. It executed a short, desperate shadow jump to dodge a lethal beam and retaliated with its own elemental barrage.
Then a close-quarters physical clash triggered a violent reaction. The moment the golden hyphae brushed against the purple rot, the two energies aggressively canceled each other out, hissing and burning away upon contact. For a brief window, the two monsters were locked in a genuine brawl; it was a big clash of rival parasitic lineages tearing each other apart in the southern dirt.
However, the golden network held a massive advantage in raw mass and density. It was anchored to the colossal chassis of a Diamond-tier dragon.
Realizing it was vastly outmatched, the corrupted mutant broke off the engagement and began to run.
But the fungal beast refused to let it escape... It chased the fleeing scout across the plains with the exact same terrifying obsession it had shown Ren, fully committed to running its corrupted prey into the ground.
Ren hovered safely above the fray on his Mantis, watching the pursuit unfold with a calm, calculating gaze.
The redirection had worked perfectly.
The creature was no longer his problem; it had found a new toy to play with.
And as long as it remained fixated on eradicating the corruption, it would spend its days hunting Selthia's surviving packs far away from the mountain and the human settlements.
For the time being, he could simply leave it alone. The bulk of Selthia's army had already evacuated the sector, leaving only a scattering of isolated scouts for the beast to chase.
Ren had already successfully harvested the prime fungal specimens from its back and head. Since the abomination was only interested in purging the dark ether, the Vanguard had no strategic reason to waste resources trying to put it down.
Letting a rogue apex predator roam the plains to thin out the Witch's ranks inadvertently turned a lethal threat into a headache for the enemy.
Pulling a few blank scrolls from his coat, Ren drafted several quick dispatches.
He sent messages to his southern aerial scouts, also Julius, and Arturo, briefing them on the new variable roaming the board. He described the reanimated Light Dragon born from ancient golden fungi, noting its singular obsession with hunting corrupted mutants.
He gave the forward spotters explicit instructions to track its movements from a safe distance without engaging. As long as the creature remained focused on Selthia's swarm, it was a highly unpredictable wildcard, not an immediate threat to humanity.
"Keep a close eye on it," Ren wrote at the bottom of the scout dispatch. "Do not provoke it under any circumstances. If its trajectory shifts toward the capital walls, inform me immediately. Until then, let it have its fun dismantling Selthia's rear guard."
With the southern perimeter secure and the rogue variable accounted for, Ren turned his Mantis around and flew back toward the mountain.
The primary objective still required his attention. The Light Guardian was dead, its transcendent core was safely tucked inside his shadow space, and the massive door to the mountain insides were wide open. Ren had no intention of leaving the final prize sitting unguarded while the Witch was actively scheming across the continent.
Leaving a high-tier artifact exposed was a rookie mistake. If he turned his back now to play with the new monster, Selthia would undoubtedly get ideas and attempt a desperate snatch-and-grab. Ren had learned the hard way never to hand her free openings.
He guided his mount back toward the glowing peak, rejoining Luna, Larissa, Liora, Liu, and Sirius. The elemental ring was waiting for them deep inside the cavern.
The guardian had fallen.
The deadly fungal trap had been redirected.
The rare mana-biological materials had been harvested.
All that remained was to walk inside, claim the key they came for, and fly back to the capital before Arturo's doomsday clock ran out.
