Chapter 236: Secret Weapon
Chapter 236: Secret Weapon
As I dashed through the streets on four legs, the first place I went was where the battle was thickest. Most of the vampires had come forth for an all-out assault. Most of the vampires had come together for one final push through.
The ghouls and the vampires from the Sun Clan were fighting them off while the lamias circled around them for a pincer attack. Seeing this, I couldn’t help but feel a bit proud. We had done a good job training them.
I suppressed my bloodlust so they wouldn’t know I was coming. I attacked from the shadows. The first vampire I came across was fighting against a lamia who was holding a spear. He dodged the lamia’s attacks, then appeared behind her, his claws poised to end the lamia’s life, but at the last second, I rushed in and ripped out his throat.
"Alpha, thank you," the lamia thanked me, but just then another vampire rushed towards us.
This lamia was a young male. The moment he saw the vampire, he stepped into the path of the attack as if to shield me. It was a noble effort but an unnecessary one. I leaped over the lamia’s head and landed down on the vampire rushing at us.
Holding the vampire down with my claws, I used my fangs to rip his head off, but with my strength, I ended up ripping off his upper body instead. I then blitzed through the battlefield, killing the vampires before they could even react.
Soon, all the vampires were huddled up in a circle with me surrounding them. Every time a vampire would break from that circle and run, I would kill them instantly. My pack members stood off to the side and watched me handle them.
They knew my presence meant that I had won against Cassian, and just seeing me caused them to smile boastfully. Some were cheering. The vampires understood what this meant. They also couldn’t feel his overbearing bloodlust anymore. They were panicking while huddled together like a herd of deer being cornered by a predator.
I circled around them, watching their every move intensely. A lot were fearful, but I think most were just wary of the giant wolf in front of them. They knew what would happen if they tried to run, so instead, they just stood their ground, preparing for an attack.
They weren’t a bad group. Cassian had done a good job training them, in fact. They seemed disciplined, and they were also powerful. I’ll offer them the same choice I gave to the others.
Just then, I spotted Sylvie, Isabella, and Kumo joining the scene.
I then transformed back into a human. When I did, their expressions immediately changed. I saw on their faces that a few were contemplating whether to make a run for it, but none of them moved.
"I’ll give you the same choice that I gave the others. You can either join my pack or meet your end right here and now. The choice is yours."
I didn’t expect all of them to join me. I could see in their eyes that most were loyal to their clan and wouldn’t be swayed no matter what. I thought I could’ve convinced most of them, but it looks as if I was wrong. It was admirable in a way.
In the end, only a third of them decided to join my pack, while the others that didn’t, I let my pack handle it. Since the city was destroyed, the other members of my pack whom I hid away in the labyrinth had to stay there for now, but I would be working on a better place for us to live.
I was practically a noble now, one of the few people who rule over this city. I don’t know how long it will last, so I’ll make the most of it for now. I wonder how the city will take this news. My pack, on the other hand, seemed excited by this news.
"Darling."
Just then, the girls rushed over to me.
"Sylvie, Isabella, Kumo, glad to see you’re all safe," I said, but for some reason, I got the feeling they were all worried about something.
"It’s Selthia. We tried searching for her, but we couldn’t find anything," Isabella hastily said.
Later that night, I sat in my room holding Cassian’s heart in my hand. Thankfully, the girls’ and my living quarters weren’t destroyed. Somehow, it still felt alive in my grasp. Without wasting another second, I sank my teeth into it and began eating.
[Congratulations, you have ascended to level 50]
I immediately felt my body strengthening. It was a warm sensation—one that I never felt in a while. If I was a human, this was the stage in which I would’ve reached my second evolution, and if I was a demon like Khalissi, I would’ve had my first evolution.
[Ding, you have unlocked the skill, Demon Lord.
Skill Description: All members of your pack will forfeit 30% of their EXP over to you upon killing.]
My eyes widened as I stared at the glowing screen in front of me. This was the first time in a while in which I had unlocked a skill. I almost forgot what it felt like.
And it was a skill to collect more EXP at that. It couldn’t have been any more perfect. Though I did find it suspicious that the name of the skill had the word ’Demon’ in it.
Knock knock.
Just then, I heard a knock on the door, and I pried my eyes away from the screen in front of me. I then got up from my place on the bed and opened the door to see who was outside. I opened the door to see it was one of the girls.
Their expressions told me they weren’t happy. They seemed worried about something.
"We need to talk," she said, barging into the room.
I closed the door behind her as she stepped in.
"Is something the matter?"
"Yes... Maybe... I don’t know."
She took a seat on my bed, but as if feeling uncomfortable, she jumped to her feet. She began biting her nails while pacing up and down.
"Calm down, tell me what’s the matter."
"No, I can’t. I... I don’t know what to do."
She was spiraling, pacing up and down, so I grabbed her and pulled her in for a hug to comfort her. She seemed to melt in my arms when I grabbed her, and soon, I saw a single drop of tears roll down her eyes. I began stroking her hair tenderly.
"Just tell me what’s the matter. We’ll figure it out together, Isabella."
Isabella took a deep breath and nodded her head. Her face turned stern as if she had made up her mind about something.
"No, it’s nothing. I was just being a silly emotional vampire. Never mind me."
Saying that, she practically stormed out of my room before I could stop her. The whole thing left me in a bit of a daze.
’What was that about?’ I couldn’t help but wonder.
...
The news of Cassian’s death spread quickly throughout the city. Most were shocked upon hearing it. They couldn’t help but feel worried about the future of their city, but then they heard another piece of news.
One they could hardly believe. They heard that a werewolf would be taking his place. Of course, most didn’t know the circumstances surrounding this, so they were left feeling worried. They knew what happened last time during the great war. They knew the power the vampires held, so for one to be killed, what power could the one who killed him hold?
They were further shocked that this person was a werewolf—the race that was ostracized and kicked out of Purgatory. How could one of them rule over Purgatory?
When the news hit, one person could hardly contain their joy. That person was, of course, Aphrodite. She skipped around her mansion happily, a leash in her right hand. Attached to the leash was Ember, crawling like a dog on the ground behind her.
Aphrodite wore a beautiful smile on her face as she greeted all her servants. She made her way to her sister’s study and, without knocking, shoved the door open. There, she saw her sister, the witch of lust, sitting behind her desk with a newspaper in hand.
This newspaper was, of course, the one detailing Cassian’s death. The witch of greed had read the paper over a hundred times, and every time she did, she had to pinch herself to make sure she wasn’t dreaming.
’Cassian is dead? He was killed by a werewolf?’
No matter how many times she read those words, she just couldn’t believe it.
"Sister, have you heard the news? We are one step closer," Aphrodite said cheerfully as she wrapped her arms around her sister from behind.
"Yes, I have, but are we sure this is real? What if it’s a fake?"
"Not to worry, I’ve already confirmed the accuracy of the paper with Damian. He was as dry as ever and wouldn’t give me any details, but he said it was real." Aphrodite’s smile seemed to grow wider and more ominous as she spoke. "Do you know what that means, sister?"
The witch of greed nodded her head. She knew exactly what it meant. It was the secret weapon she and her sister were preparing, the weapon that would conquer this city.
"Don’t worry, the spell is already completed."
