Chapter 289: A Calm Wind
Chapter 289: A Calm Wind
A calm wind blew overhead as I squinted my eyes against the brilliant light of the sun. The waves were especially violent today, pulling and twisting me in whichever way it pleased. I no longer cared. I resigned myself to go wherever the tides took me.
It had been a month since the supernova, which destroyed Purgatory. Since then, I had been aimlessly drifting at sea. I drifted on top of a thin sheet of metal, which was part of the wreckage from the supernatural city.
Around me, I could hear the waves crashing and a sea creature would swim past me every once in a while. A small pod of dolphins had taken an interest in me for a few days and even kept me company, but they eventually got bored and swam off a week ago.
I think...
My concept of time was completely gone. I fought Damian for at least a month, I think. In the beginning, I counted the days as I drifted at sea, but I stopped somewhere around the 20th mark.
I wonder how my pack is doing...
I sent them a message, and I had my shadow ravens carry my blood to Isabella, who was back at Ryomen.
There was several wreckage floating around in the water around me, so I had my shadow ravens retrieve anything that might be useful. Like the clothes i was currently wearing for instance.
KAW!
Speaking of the devil, one of my ravens returned and landed on my chest.
KAW!
It seemed as if something had caught its attention.
Curious, I sat up and looked around, but there was nothing but crashing waves as far as the eye could see. I then focused on my sense of hearing instead. I ignored the sound of crashing waves, the noises of the seagulls as they gulped down fish, and soon, I heard something.
It was the sound of something mechanical just beyond the horizon. I watched the horizon in anticipation, waiting for whatever I heard to soon come into view, and soon I saw something.
"That is... a ship."
I could hardly believe it myself when I said the words. Without wasting another second, I immediately sent my shadow ravens to take a closer look. I observed what they saw through their eyes, and the moment they got closer, I was even more surprised by what I saw.
The entire ship was covered in grey armored steel, and on the deck were several artillery pieces. I even spotted a few people in military uniform carrying submachine guns.
"So it’s a military ship," I mumbled to myself.
I wasn’t quite bothered by this fact. As long as it could take me somewhere that wasn’t in the ocean, then I didn’t care what kind of vessel it was. Hence, I created a fire in the palm of my hand and created a smoke signal.
I also had my shadow ravens circle around me in the sky to draw their attention. My plan seemed to have worked, as a minute later, I heard a loud horn, and the ship turned in my direction.
The moment I saw this, I allowed my shadow ravens to leave and lowered my hand. I then sat and waited as the massive ship approached me. Soon, the ship stopped a good distance away, and I could see a few speed boats emerging from the side of the boat.
On these boats were armed soldiers, pointing their weapons at me.
"Put your hands up! I repeat, put your hands up!" one of the soldiers shouted.
I complied with their request and raised both arms in the air.
"Now, I’ll only ask this question once. Are you human?"
"Yes, I am," I answered without skipping a beat.
"What are you doing all the way out here?"
I took a deep breath before answering.
"Me and some friends tried to escape the mainland. You know, with everything happening. We were hoping to go to some island and live freely, but our boat capsized."
All the soldiers turned and looked at each other as if to ask if my story sounded believable.
"My name is Liam Lycann. I used to attend Apex High School in Starlit City. My social security number is 4738393939. My mother’s name is Lisa Lycann, and the last president is..."
I started spouting off random facts like a scared teenager desperate for help. With this, they’d be less likely to suspect I was a demon or something else.
"Alright, alright, calm down," the soldier holding the speaker said before throwing something that landed on my lap.
I looked down to see a handcuff on my lap.
"We can’t take any risks. Put those on, and we’ll verify who you are and give you the help you need, ok?"
The soldier that spoke didn’t sound like a bad person. I could decipher that much from his tone of voice, his heartbeat, and other bodily functions. Some of the other soldiers, on the other hand, were seconds away from pulling the trigger if I even made a wrong move.
They must’ve developed some sort of trauma fighting with demons or human-like supernatural creatures.
I looked at the soldiers, nodded, and slowly reached down and grabbed the handcuff before attaching it to my wrist.
Interesting...
The handcuff wasn’t any normal handcuff. It seemed to be enhanced by mana. It was much sturdier than actual steel. At least this way, I wouldn’t accidentally break it.
The soldiers then allowed me to get onto their boats before going back to their massive ship.
While still wearing handcuffs and surrounded by soldiers, I climbed up the ladder and entered the ship. There, I spotted even more soldiers around. Most had their guns pointed at me. I took a quick step back since this was how a teenager would react to having a gun pointed at them.
That was when I felt a hand touch my shoulder. It was the soldier with the microphone I spoke to earlier. With his hand resting on my shoulder, he gave me a reassuring smile and said:
"It will be fine."
I gave him a slight nod, then turned to look at the other soldiers around me. It was then that I saw a familiar face among the crowd. Our eyes met, causing both our eyes to widen in surprise.
’What is she doing here?’
