Chapter 941: Planetfall At Xetarva
Chapter 941: Planetfall At Xetarva
I watched from the bridge as the ships began their descent into the planet’s atmosphere, most of them being Corvettes and Gunboats.
Dozens upon dozens of ships burned through the atmosphere right before flashes of what I assumed to be cannon fire and lasers from the ship started bombarding the planet’s surface.
I was wondering why couldn’t we just keep bombarding them from orbit and then drop in afterwards until I saw flashes of green coming up from the planet’s surface.
Balls of what looked like greenish fireballs soared towards the sky and a few ships ended up getting hit by those green fireballs which melted through their hulls and sent them crashing down onto the planet’s surface.
What the heck? Those bugs can do that? I can see why this planet has been a problem then.
When I zoomed my cameras into the planet’s surface, I realised that the entire surface of the planet was covered with them and they were swarming out from holes in the ground, making it look like there was an entire sea of them.
The green fireballs seemed to be shot out from these large, bulbous looking beetles where their abdomens would glow for a moment before they shot out those green fireballs from their backsides.
The skies were filled with those green fireballs again and the descending ships altered their paths to avoid them, though a few had not been fast enough and ended up getting hit.
A few of the ships that were in orbit with me fired their cannons, taking aim at the bulbous bugs and blasting them into pieces with kinetic shells, clearing the way for the first wave of ships to start clearing out a landing zone.
But even with their concentrated efforts, more of those bugs just kept climbing out from the surrounding holes and filling up the spaces of its dead comrades.
From what I can tell, they seem to be trying to secure a plateau as a landing zone but the bugs keep climbing up the side of the walls and trying to claim that same plateau for themselves. The tide doesn’t look like it was going to stop at all despite the fact that there were already mounds of bug corpses littering the ground.
Another fleet of smaller ships were launched from the Carrier and I realised those were Bombers sent to initiate a bombing run.
The bombers lined themselves up and organised themselves into wings that flew down into the planet’s atmosphere before they dropped their payloads over the sea of bugs.
Black egg shaped pellets were dropped down on top of the bugs and I saw explosions go off that could be seen even without the camera on the planet’s surface.
That wasn’t even the ending as the landscape was suddenly engulfed with flames and the surviving bugs were burned alive by the fire.
In an instant, the area around the plateau was cleared of bugs as they retreated back into their holes to escape from the fire.
The Corvettes and Gunboats continued firing their guns after the bugs, killing as many of them as they could before they could disappear into the ground.
There was a short pause before another wave of ships began its descent onto the planet’s surface, consisting of a group of logistics ships and their escorts.
"They’re really planning to build a base down there," Yumiko mused, looking up at the screens showing the ships’ descent.
"Is that a bad thing?" I asked.
Yumiko turned to Amber and gave her a look, prompting her to tap on the console panel to shift the camera away and zoom in on a certain part of the planet.
I was treated to the sight of what looked like the remains of a settlement that had been ravaged by the bugs.
The buildings were composed of several domes and a few rectangular shaped buildings but all of them were in a state of collapse with holes and scorch marks on them.
There was also what looked like a landing pad that had half collapsed and the wreckage of a ship that had crashed into one of the settlement buildings.
"I assume those were what happened to the previous attempt at colonising the planet?" I asked.
The girls gave me a curt nod.
I grimaced, "Well... I hope they have a better plan than the last time then..."
Amber chuckled, "Ahaha~ To be fair, they didn’t have this many warships the last time they tried to colonise the planet."
"Hmm... Why didn’t they just try again, then? I would have thought they would immediately send in warships to deal with them to avoid having any loss of face."
Yumiko made a face, "They didn’t really have a reason to pay much attention to the planet back then. Failing to colonise planets was an occurrence that was not so rare around the Outer Colonies so this was just another failure on the reports. They were quite prepared to just leave this planet be until..."
"The orbital scans showed huge deposits of Prisma underneath the planet’s crust~" Amber finished.
Right, of course. That’s why they brought an entire battle group here to bombard the shit out of the bugs...
I watched as the first logistics ship touched down on the plateau, dropping some kind of a large, house sized box on the ground.
The box then suddenly popped open its top and extended upwards as the other ships also came in to drop more of them, placing those boxes at the edges of the plateau.
I watched as the sides of those boxes extended to connect with each other, revealing that they were walls and the top of those boxes opened to let a turret slide out from within to point its turret outwards.
They really just orbital dropped some fortifications right there huh...
More of those ships came in to drop those boxes which I now knew were prefab buildings and they formed themselves into military outpost buildings including several landing pads including one that was big enough to land my ship on top of.
Behind those logistics ships came the dropships which came down to land on the landing pads, their bay doors opening to allow soldiers suited up in combat armour to spill out and man the walls.
I was wondering why they were moving so quickly like they were still under attack since the sea of fire was still burning and preventing the bugs from coming out, only to see a cloud of flying bugs appear from further away and heading directly towards the plateau.
The dropships were still coming in with more troops so the Corvettes and Gunboats arranged themselves into a line formation to form up against the incoming flying bugs.
The turrets on both the ships and the fortifications started firing at them first, shooting a number of them out of the sky.
Swarms of them started dropping like flies but even despite that, the cloud of flying bugs continued their dive towards the defensive line without caring about their fallen comrades.
The soldiers on the ground also began firing, forming a screen of death that somewhat halted the advance of the flying bugs.
A few managed to get through it and dove towards the ships, one of the Corvettes being unlucky enough to get swarmed by the bugs as they tore into its hull.
The Gunboat next to it quickly switched their firing direction to start shooting off the bugs, but not before the bugs tore into the Corvette’s engines and sent the entire ship spiralling down into the sea of fire below.
The next wave of dropships landed and more soldiers spilled out to join the defence.
An even bigger dropship touched down on the larger landing pad and the bay door opened to roll out several Power Armoured units as well as what looked like Spider Tanks.
All of them joined the defense on the walls and the flying bugs didn’t stand a chance at coming close to the fort anymore.
I thought the landing would be a success at this point until the fire died down and the bugs from underground started pouring out again, swarming up towards the plateau once more and trying to overrun it.
Faced with attacks from both below and above, the soldiers on the ground were finding it hard to push the tide back.
A screen then appeared in front of me, showing the Admiral himself.
"Go now. Land the ship and release the dogs."
I nod at Renata, prompting her to start moving our ship to descend to the planet’s atmosphere as well.
"Admiral?" I called out before he ended the call.
"What is it, Merc?"
"Do you want some additional firepower as well? My ship is also equipped with weapons too. And I have Exo-Knights we can sortie."
He seemed a little surprised by my offer but he quickly schooled his expression to a neutral one.
"I won’t say no to additional firepower. If you do well enough, I will send a recommendation for a bonus."
Good.
Girls... Wanna go test out our Exo-Knights on some bugs?
