Chapter 958: Return To The Surface
Chapter 958: Return To The Surface
I wasn’t sure what would happen to the rest of the bugs once this supposed queen was dead so I was watching them carefully the moment I tore its head off its body.
It felt like the place suddenly had a pulse of energy travelling through it, like all the Prisma crystals around the cavern carried a wave of energy that pulsed through the entire cavern.
Then the bugs exploded.
That was not an exaggeration as their heads suddenly exploded into fountains of gore, like a bomb had gone off in their heads that caused them to pop like a pimple with their greenish blood spraying everywhere.
The explosion went like a wave that spread outwards from where the queen had died like the epicentre of some explosion.
The tower that the bugs had been trying to build upwards to reach me with their bodies also collapsed, the entire tower crashing back onto the ground to join the other headless bugs that had piled up in the cavern.
I stayed in the air for a moment, waiting to see if anything else would happen before surveying the cavern.
"Didn’t think they would just die like that..." I mused.
"Mmm... That’s because of the crystals, Daddy~" Renata informed me chirpily.
I looked down at my chest, "What do you mean?"
"Mmm... I ate them just now and figured out how they functioned, Daddy~ They built a nest inside these crystal deposits and the Queen has evolved to be able to make use of the energies given off by these crystals to function as a hive mind and to mutate its offsprings~"
I raised an eyebrow, "It used the energies from the crystals?"
"That’s right, Daddy!"
If I didn’t already know that the crystals were capable of being used as energy sources, that sentence would sound like some occult bullshit you might hear from those kinds of people that sell bogus healing crystals.
Renata continued, "And since the queen is controlling all the bugs using the crystals, the moment it died, there will be a backlash from it which a normal bug’s body would not be able to handle which will cause their heads to explode! Ehehehe~"
Right. Good to know then... I guess it’s a good thing we don’t have to worry about hunting down all the bugs since I was afraid they might run off and hide after the queen is dead.
That would have definitely been annoying...
Well, at least we don’t have that to worry about.
I looked down at the dead queen before thinking for a moment, "We would probably need to take a picture of this or something to prove that the bugs are dead..."
"Oh, don’t worry Daddy! I have been recording how cool you are the entire time!!"
I blinked at her, "Wait... The entire time?"
"That’s right! We can just show the recording to them!!"
"No wait... You do realise I was showing them my Psionic powers and all the tentacles, right? There’s no way we can show that!"
"Ehehehe~ There’s no need to worry, Daddy! I’ve edited the recording already! After all, this will also be posted onto our channel too!"
"We’re posting this on the channel too?"
"Yeah!! This will make great content!"
"You sure that’s safe? We’ll be literally showing that I’m fighting alongside dogs, you know?"
"Mmm... I dunno. That black dragon sister is the one who will decide that."
"You mean Vier?"
"Mmhmm~ Mmhmm~ I already sent it to her and she said she’s working on it right now!"
Well... I guess if it’s Vier then I can just leave it to her since she would probably know how to handle this better than I do.
"I’ll leave it to you then. Send me the pictures and videos to my Codex I guess. But I think we might as well take the head of the queen back. I can just let one of the dogs carry it and make it seem like it was the dogs that killed her."
"Waaahhh! Daddy is so smart!"
Pretty sure that’s just normal but ok...
I lifted up the head of the bug Queen with my telekinesis before flying out of the cavern with it, making sure to stay above the sea of bug corpses as I flew out of the chasm and back to the tunnel where the dogs were.
All of them had stayed where I left them, a pile of bug corpses laid out in front of them.
It doesn’t look like they had even moved back an inch even with the corpses piling up high enough to form a big wall in front of them.
What’s more, it also didn’t look like they suffered a single injury, much less any casualties.
All of them started barking happily when they saw me, their tails wagging in unison so fast that it actually caused a gust of wind to start blowing through the tunnel.
"I’m back~ Settle down now. Could you carry this for me?" I asked, handing the large head of the queen bug to a corgi.
She happily bit on the edge of the giant bug’s head and lifted it up with no problems, even doing a happy dance with its stubby legs excitedly.
The other dogs seemed jealous of her but... Sorry, there’s only one queen head to carry... You’ll have to make do with a head pat...
But the moment I started head patting the dogs closest to the corgi, the corgi also wanted the head pat and then the other dogs that were behind also wanted head pats.
Soon enough, I was stuck head patting all of them and even using my tentacles to spawn more copies of me to head pat all of them.
I’m pretty sure it took me more time to head pat all of the dogs than it took me to go down the chasm to kill the Queen bug.
I would say it was still worth it though.
With everything secured, I led the way back up to the surface with the dogs following behind me.
I had to float above the mounds of bug corpses that we had killed to get here and I’m so glad I did not have to wade through all of that.
The dogs didn’t have a problem with that though, as they weaved through the corpse sea easily.
Even the corgi that was carrying the large, decapitated head of the bug queen was also hopping along without being impeded.
The way back actually felt shorter than I remembered, probably because I didn’t need to fight through hordes of bugs to advance through the caves though the corpses that filled every inch of the tunnel certainly kept reminding me of them.
It took a while more before we reached the end of the underground cavern where we started our slaughter, the front part of the cavern still littered with the crushed corpses of the bugs I had squashed with my telekinesis.
That was when I realised there was quite a steep slope from the tunnel down to this cavern and while it might have been easy to just slide down the wall of the cavern to reach the ground, getting back up was a whole other issue altogether.
I then got worried that when the workers inevitably come down here and start mining the Prisma crystals, they would wonder how we managed to climb down there to kill the queen bug when there was no clear way down to the chasm.
Just as I was thinking if I should go back and use my telekinesis to reshape the chasm walls to form some kind of road down to the bottom, a few of the dogs seemed to sense my hesitation and moved towards the wall.
I wondered what they were trying to do when the jumped up onto the wall and gripped their paws on it, their claws digging into the rock wall and holding them up and allowing them to cling on the side of the wall.
Even the corgi went up to jump on the wall to climb up a few steps while carrying the bug queen’s head stopping halfway up to turn back and wag her tail at me.
Right... So basically... They could have just followed me down the chasm without any issues and I had been worried for nothing...
Is there anything the dogs can’t do?
Could they actually file my taxes for me if I asked them to?
You know what, don’t actually answer that question because I have a feeling that the answer would not be a no.
I flew up to the tunnel and the sound of five hundred dogs climbing up the wall could be heard from behind me as I continued leading them through the tunnels to reach the entrance of the burrow.
It certainly felt like a long time since we went down into these tunnels but when I reached the entrance, I could see that there was still light from the star system’s sun shining through the hole of the burrow.
Guess we were only down here for a few hours at most.
Anyway, I’m back girls~
