Chapter 961: Diving Into The Burrows With The Girls
We weren’t going to just go rushing off to the next nest to start clearing it of course... I also want a break too...
I’m not like some people who can get infinite satisfaction from killing bugs.
It may not be physically exhausting, but it definitely does wear me down mentally, especially since I was using my mind to kill them.
Just as Yumiko had predicted, Nerissa received the order from the military to leave the planet for time off from the combat zone.
Since we also decided to take a break, we offered to fly her off to the nearest civilian station where she could spend some time off until she could return again.
We had to make two jumps which brought us to a rather standard habitat station which obviously wasn’t much to write home about.
We are, after all, at the fringes of Outer Colony space right now, so we can’t expect any luxury accommodations.
And because of that... Nerissa took one look at that station and pleaded to let her stay on board our ship instead.
She even offered to give half of the Credits I gave her back to me as rent which I decided not to take as long as she helped me watch over the ship.
Because apparently, as long as she was off the planet, that would be counted as her being outside of the combat zone.
So she could just stay on the Iridescence that would float in orbit while we descended to the surface with The Drow of Dawn.
That was exactly what we did as we did a quick supply run before returning to the planet.
Instead of following the military, we flew to the opposite side of the planet instead where I planned to make planet fall to deal with one of the bug nests there ourselves.
Since there weren’t any humans trying to build a settlement on the surface, the nest we were targeting only had a few of those bugs wandering on the surface so we didn’t need to worry about clearing a landing zone for ourselves.
Especially since the girls and I intend to drop down to the planet on our Exo-Knights anyway.
There was one additional member who joined our expedition though...
When I wanted to leave, I found Frejya making whining noises at me and looking up at me pathetically.
Somehow, I figured out that she was rather upset that I didn’t bring her along on the bug clearing expedition.
I tried to tell her that it was dangerous and especially more so since she would be the only dog there but... She started throwing a tantrum and even rolling on the floor while making barking noises at me.
I felt really bad for her so I decided to just bring her along in the end as long as she stayed near me.
The Drow of Dawn detached from the Iridescence and and we descended towards the planet surface, all of us already mounted up in our Exo-Knights.
Freyja was strapped into the seat behind me, my doggo wagging her tail happily like she was on a road trip and not on an extermination mission.
I stepped towards the hangar bay doors as we completed our atmospheric entry, the doors sliding open as I approached it with my girls.
I stopped at the edge, looking down at the planet’s surface to see a scattering of bugs wandering around the entrance of the burrows.
"Ready girls?" I asked.
The girls all gave me a thumbs up so I jumped out of the ship, descending towards the surface and flying directly towards one of the burrows.
The bugs that were guarding it looked up to see us diving down towards them, only for them to get blasted apart by a rain of kinetic autocannon rounds from me.
My girls spread themselves out, eliminating the scattering of bugs that were on the surface with deadly precision.
With them wiped out, the surface was clear for our ship to land right in front of one of the burrows.
We moved the Exo-Knights back into the hangar bay before we dismounted from the ship, proceeding with our dive of the burrow on foot.
Ries was the only one who changed into a Power Armour and stomped her way towards the burrow while taking up the rear.
Just in case more bugs appeared from the other burrows, Renata left several of her bodies behind to guard the ship.
I stared down at the newest burrow with my shotgun and halberd in my hands while Freyja wagged her tail happily at my side.
Unfortunately, that also meant my girls were staying far away from me since Freyja was with me, all of them being afraid to be close to her.
Oh well... I’m just glad I’m not doing this expedition alone at least...
I took a moment to look behind me.
Amber and Mara were a few steps behind me, both of them already flaring their Psionic energies though they were standing still a good distance from the burrow.
Behind them was Lea who was doing a final check on her coil rifle, her personal shields already activated to cloak her when she isn’t moving.
Towering behind Lea was Ries in the Power Armour that she had built for herself after Renata consumed the one that was built for me, the armour sporting an impressive loadout of big guns that were strapped to almost every available surface of the machine.
Beside her was Yumiko, the former Pirate Lord and special forces soldier with both her swords drawn and the edges of the blades pulsing menacingly.
Taking the rear of the formation was Renata, her purple hair billowing softly behind her despite the fact that there was no breeze blowing right now.
Vier was back on the Iridescence with Nerissa, our dragon girl being occupied with editing the videos that Renata would be recording and sending to her during this expedition.
I have no idea how they will deal with footage of three Psionics being recorded but... I guess that’s for Renata and Vier to worry about so I left it to them to deal with.
With a final check that everyone was prepared, I led the way down into the burrow which should lead us to a nest in this region.
In the first nest I went to, the burrows were pretty much empty since the bugs had been made to retreat after they had been slaughtered by the dogs but this one had quite a number of bugs guarding the entrance who immediately turned and started skittering towards us angrily upon seeing us.
Freyja moved before any of us could as she let out a bark and leapt forward.
I watched as she crushed one bug underneath a paw, using it as a springboard to charge through another one where she pounced through the bug like it was made of paper in order to slash through two other bugs with her claws.
She then spun herself in midair, planting her feet on the ceiling and leapt back down again, landing on top of the last bug to smash it into the ground and shaking the tunnel with the force of her crash.
She then ran back to me and barked happily, sitting on her haunches while wagging her tail.
I knew what she wanted so I just went ahead to give her a headpat, making her let out a satisfied whine as I did so.
Amber let out a dissatisfied groan from behind me, "Oh come on, Tera... Spoil us too! I want to let loose as well!"
I turned to her, "Trust me... If this nest has as many bugs as the previous one... We would have more bugs than we know what to do with... I’m more afraid that we might get overrun instead."
Renata peeked from the back, "Daddy! Don’t worry! I’ll make sure we won’t get overrun!"
Yes, yes, I know you’re watching the rear to secure our path of retreat Renata, that’s why I decided to do this nest clearing even though we were vastly outnumbered as well.
Psionic or not... It’s not good to think that we’re invincible just because of that. The last thing we need is getting complacent and then ending up dying to a couple of bugs...
We continued forward and the tunnel was shorter than the previous one where it reached a cavern that was crawling with bugs after only a short walk.
Even here, glittering outcropping of Prisma crystals could be seen jutting out of the walls and I wonder if it would be possible for us to earn some Credits by mining them ourselves when Ries beat me to it.
"Bossssss!! We have to mine some of the crystals ourselves later!! Not only can we use it ourselves, they would fetch quite a lot of Credits on the markets as well!!"
Well... That shout also drew the attention of the bugs which prompted all of them to stop and turn towards us.
Hmm... I’ll have to spank you later, Ries... But in the meantime... Let’s go, girls.
