Chapter 977: Just Normal Things In This Station
Chapter 977: Just Normal Things In This Station
I went back to the ship and fed both Freyja and Nerissa with my cooking I prepared specifically for them.
Nerissa actually cried when she received the food from me while Freyja ate all her food with relish.
After letting Nerissa know that we would be staying outside the ship today, I left her with Freyja on the ship while I stepped out.
I checked my Codex to see that I had received a message from Valiea which was a map indicating where their home was located in the station.
Following the map, I returned to the station and followed the directions through the streets of the station.
The place was relatively far so I decided to catch a ride on the station’s public train to get there.
Unfortunately, this place did not seem to have private hire vehicles so I didn’t exactly have a choice.
The train was an elevated monorail that ran in a circle around the city area of the station which seemed to be the main form of transport for the denizens of the station.
Aside from walking and getting your own car of course.
The station was quite packed with commuters heading to and from the train platform.
I passed through the gantry, the ticket fee automatically being deducted from my Codex as I walked through a pair of scanners.
Unfortunately for me, despite this being a futuristic universe, the train station wasn’t exactly the image of a clean and high tech location with the trash and graffiti scattered around the interior.
There were drunk and drugged out commuters stumbling around and I even walked past the scene of two guys in the middle of beating each other up right in the middle of the platform.
Everyone was just ignoring them like this was basically just something you see everyday and no one even batted an eye at them.
The train arrived after only a minute, the six carriage vehicle humming to a stop beside the platform before the doors slid open and people moved in and out of the train like clockwork.
I stepped on board as well, finding that all the available seats had already been taken so I just went ahead to stand on the other side of the door, leaning against the wall beside it.
Most of the commuters were busy looking at their personal terminals with a select few watching the city outside roll by as the train resumed its journey.
I checked my Codex to see that it would take me a few stops before I reached my destination and settled in to wait.
But right as the train started picking up speed, I noticed one of the commuters was walking through the carriage from the other end and moving in my direction.
That normally wouldn’t be something I would pay attention to... If it weren’t for the fact that the guy was holding a pistol in his right hand and pressing it against his side like he was trying to hide it but still wanted it to be ready to be used at a moment’s notice.
I wondered if he was targeting me for some reason but he suddenly stopped in front of some guy wearing a business suit right as the train slowed down to reach the next station.
The business man didn’t even notice that the guy was standing in front of him as he was busy looking at his personal terminal and only looked up when the train came to a stop.
He paused when he saw the guy and his eyes widened, only for the guy to lift up his pistol and point it at his face.
"Should have paid up," The guy with the pistol stated simply, right before pulling the trigger.
The loud bang of the pistol filled the cabin and the guy’s head jerked back, his blood splattering against the window behind him as his body fell limp.
The commuters around them let out a cry of alarm and most of them ran out of the train, pushing past each other to get away from the shooter. Some still remained where they were but not because they weren’t surprised by it but more because they were too shocked to do anything.
My hand rested on my pistol as I stayed where I was, opting to see what would happen next instead of running.
Someone on the other side pulled out his pistol and pointed it at that guy, "You! Stop right there! Don’t move! Drop that weapon!"
The shooter didn’t even look worried as he turned to face the other guy smoothly.
"This is one of those times that you shouldn’t try to be a hero. Put that away while you still can."
The other guy continued to point his gun at him and opened his mouth to say something, probably to tell the shooter not to move and to drop his gun again.
He did not get to say another word, however.
The shooter suddenly moved like a blur and another bang echoed throughout the cabin, the wannabe hero keeling over with a bullet hole through the head.
I watched as the guy fell to the ground with a thud, his life just ended in such a quick and abrupt fashion that he probably did not even have time to come to terms with his death before he died.
The shooter then walked out of the train without a second glance back, right as the train doors closed and the train resumed its journey.
I kept my hand on my pistol, waiting to see if anything else unexpected would happen.
The unexpected thing came in the form of three people, two of them being male and the last one being a female, rushing forward to start looting the corpses.
The girl had gone for the dead wannabe hero while the two guys tried to claim the businessman’s personal terminal, probably figuring that the more well dressed guy had more Credits instead of the other one.
But neither of them were willing to share so they ended up fighting over it, one of them throwing a punch at the other guy and knocking him to the ground.
He tried to run off with the businessman’s personal terminal but... There wasn’t really anywhere he could run off to since we were in an enclosed cabin so the other guy lunged at him and knocked him to the ground, scrambling with him to fight over the personal terminal.
The others who had stayed in the train, which I counted was only the ten of us, watched the two men fight each other over the personal terminal like they were starving animals competing over the last piece of meat.
The girl finished looting the dead hero wannabe and decided she wanted the businessman’s Credits too and tried to snatch the personal terminal away from the two guys.
The two guys seemed to believe in gender equality because they immediately pulled back their fists and punched her in the face, sending the girl tumbling down onto the floor.
Neither of them even cared about her after knocking her down as they went right back to fighting each other for the personal terminal, throwing punches and kicks at each other as they tried to get the other to back off.
The girl pushed herself up, blood pouring out of her obviously broken nose as she glared at the two men that were still fighting with each other.
She then crawled over to where the dead wannabe hero laid and rolled his body aside.
I only had a second to wonder what she was trying to do when she yanked the guy’s gun out from his corpse and pointed it in the direction of the two men.
She pulled the trigger, shooting a bullet that struck the first guy in the back of the head and killing him.
She then tried to shift the gun to point at the other guy but it became evident that the first shot was pure luck as the next three shots went wide and struck the floor once and the wall behind the guy twice.
He scrambled to his feet as he realised the girl was actually trying to kill him and rushed at her.
She managed to squeeze off another shot and it struck him in the stomach.
But either he had a cybernetic body or he was tanking through the pain through pure adrenaline as he continued to rush towards her, giving her a kick in the stomach.
She doubled over on the ground and he descended upon her, trying to wrestle the gun away from her while she tried to fight him off.
There was another bang as the gun went off again and we watched as the girl’s head exploded from the bullet blasting through the underside of her chin to blast through the back of her head.
The guy then sat back on his haunches, letting out a breath of relief.
Then I guess the pain hit him as he looked down to realise he had been shot, right before his adrenaline wore off and his eyes rolled back before collapsing on his back, probably succumbing to his wounds.
What the fuck guys? I’m only here to take the train!
