Chapter 996: Duel In A Battle Royale
Chapter 996: Duel In A Battle Royale
I grabbed the rifle from the ground and made sure it was loaded before peeking out from the side of the wall.
Several shots were fired at me which I only just managed to dodge away at the last moment before I could get myself shot in the face.
That guy has already marked me I see...
Damnit... I’m not even well equipped for this encounter... I guess I’ll just have to make do with what I have right now...
The person I’m now fighting was obviously a veteran and I cursed the fact that the matchmaking in this game was obviously busted for me to match up with a player like that but fought down my protests to concentrate on what was happening right now.
Figuring that the player wasn’t going to let me go until he managed to hunt me down, I dove out of the stairwell and fired a few rounds in the direction of where I last saw him.
He seemed to have completely been caught off guard, probably because he expected me to run off and not turn back to fight him and he was in the midst of chasing after me.
I managed to land a few hits on the guy but he also had a shield which managed to protect him from being hit before he leapt away to avoid the rest of my gunshots.
I took advantage of that as I repositioned myself into the hallway, the stairwell might offer me good cover but the limited angle of attack made it easy for him to predict where I will shoot from.
He recovered faster than I thought and was already shooting a few rounds at me, nailing two shots at my side which my shield managed to tank for me so that my health remained full.
Out of the top corner of my vision, I could see a blue bar drop down by a few points which obviously was an indication of my shield strength.
I’m not sure if the shield would regenerate itself or if this was the type where you needed to use some kind of battery to charge it.
I found cover behind several overturned furniture and took a moment to check the ammo of my rifle.
That was when I realised that while I had grabbed this gun, I did not grab any spare ammunition for it so I was only limited to just one magazine.
At least I still have the pistol and both the laser dagger and sword... But with how he was moving earlier, I don’t think they would be of much help anyway.
Screw it, if I lose, I lose. It’s just a game anyway...
I got ready to move right as I felt a tingle at the back of my neck.
The memory of the guy who ducked behind the table only to get naded suddenly popped in my head.
Trusting my instincts, I popped out of my cover and sure enough, there was a small, pineapple shaped object being lobbed towards me right now.
My instinct drove me to smack at the grenade with the butt of my rifle, sending it flying back in the direction of that other player who was in the midst of trying to flank me.
I could see the hesitation in his steps when he realised I had returned his grenade back to him and I’m pretty sure he was doing the calculation to figure out if he had time to return the grenade back to me.
I gave him the incentive not to do that when I opened fire on him, forcing him to take a few hits with his shield while he scrambled away to avoid the grenade.
The explosion did help cover his retreat as it blew up a cloud of smoke, hiding him from view as he moved behind a pillar to take cover.
If I had spare ammo, I would be trying to suppress him behind that pillar while I repositioned myself right now but I had to conserve my ammo because of the limited rounds I had.
Instead, I moved closer to him, dashing across the space between us in an attempt to catch him before he could fully recover.
Unfortunately, I seemed to have underestimated him a little as he pulled out a pistol and fired a few shots in my direction while still behind the pillar.
Seriously? He was already expecting me to do something like that and he’s even shooting around the corner blindly?!
Even despite the fact that he wasn’t even looking at where he’s shooting, he still managed to hit me with a few shots, dropping my shield bar down to half.
I gritted my teeth, deciding to just take the damage to finish closing the distance instead of backing away. Otherwise, I would have taken that damage for nothing.
I turned around the corner, making sure I was at least a short distance away from the pillar so that he could not grab at my gun to start firing a quick burst of three shots.
He did something unexpected where he crouched down low, causing my bullets that were aimed at where his chest was to hit the pillar instead.
While I was trying to shift my rifle downwards, he rolled to the other side of the pillar, using it as a shield to block my aim.
Once again, he fired from around the pillar, with only his hand sticking out with his pistol, nailing me in the chest twice and dropping my shield another fraction.
This slippery bastard!
I ducked my head and rushed him, letting his next few shots sail above my head while I closed in.
Just as I was about to reach the pillar however, he suddenly leapt out and smacked my rifle’s barrel away to point it to the side, moving to shift his pistol up towards my head.
I reacted just as quickly and let go of the rifle, using my left hand to smack his wrist just as he squeezed the trigger and fired a bullet that sailed above my head.
My other hand went for my holster, pulling out my own pistol to shoot from the hip.
I managed to squeeze off a shot that hit his abdomen before he kicked up his knee and smashed it against my wrist, forcing my hand up.
He tried to pull his pistol back and out of my reach to shoot at me from his hip as well.
Well, taking a page out of his book, I went ahead to kick him at the side of his knee, forcing him to bend down and discharging his gun at the ground instead.
He frowned and used his other hand to reach behind him which prompted me to do the same, both of us pulling out our daggers at the same time.
He attempted a stab at my abdomen which I parried with my dagger to push it off to the side, giving me the space I need to point my pistol at his chest.
I didn’t get to hit him as he immediately smacked my gun to the side with the hand of his own pistol, redirecting my shot to the side while he managed to pull off a quick shot that struck against my chest and drain my shield.
I gave him a kick in his shin and pointed my gun at his head when he stumbled, only for his dagger to come up and stab me in the upper arm to force it aside while he did the same with his pistol from below.
In response, I stabbed my own dagger into his arm as well, forcing him to point it at the ground as we both shot our guns into empty air.
I watched as my health dropped from his dagger stabbing into my arm but I’m sure he was also hurt the same amount since I did the exact same thing as he did.
Both of us then disengaged as we pulled back, lifting our pistols again to squeeze the trigger.
The sounds of our weapons clicking filled the air as we realised we had run out of ammo.
We didn’t hesitate as we charged at each other, tossing our pistol aside as we aimed our dagger at the other’s throat.
He moved at the last moment to try and side step it but my other hand had the energy sword handle prepared and activated it, resulting in the blade appearing to stab him through the abdomen.
Under normal circumstances... He would definitely be dead but... This is a game so his health only decreased by a set amount.
Which turned out to be my undoing as he shoved my dagger arm aside and stabbed his own blade into my neck while getting closer to me with my sword still jammed in his gut.
At this angle, I realised that my sword was stuck in between us and I could not pull out to attack him again. My dagger was also now at an angle where I could not actually strike at him while he repeatedly stabbed at my neck to drain me of my health.
That was when I saw the grenade he still had on his hip.
Fuck this.
I dropped my dagger and reached for the grenade, pulling it off of him and activating it by pressing on the top right as he stabbed me again, lowering my health down to zero.
I watched as my body dissipated into light particles and I got to see from a third person view as my body disappeared, dropping the grenade at his feet.
It seems he didn’t realise what I did as he only looked down after the grenade landed on the floor.
The explosion completely took him out and he also disappeared into particles of light.
Ha! Suck on that!!
