Chapter 206 – Back to That Place After a Long Time

Was it really okay?

Assuming so, I left the spot and resumed mapping.

The two who were said to have fallen were indeed dead.

It was a sheer, 100-meter-high cliff with an exposed rock face.

Even if they were experienced hunters, one of them had multiple stab wounds. I think they would have died instantly if they had fallen.

If I had been asked, I would have at least pulled their bodies up.

However, no matter how I looked at it, it seemed like they were escorting a carriage. Continuing on like that would only get in the way.

Come to think of it, the bandits’ bodies were also left along the road.

Well, never mind.

Something will probably eat them and dispose of them naturally.

“This is… If I get hooked on this, I’m screwed.”

I use lighthearted words deliberately to distract myself.

Even though I understand it intellectually, it’s difficult to control myself because it’s so delicious.

I wonder how much skill I gained in the battle just now.

Even if I become a bandit who kills to steal others’ wealth, the experiences I’ve accumulated so far won’t have been in vain.

They were only thin experiences that wouldn’t amount to much in a job.

But to me, every little bit counts, so I’ll take whatever experience I can get.

I’ll be thanked by the goddesses, the country, the victims, and even the animals and monsters that prey on them.

I’m doing the best thing possible by paying off all my bad deeds at once, yet I still feel a little guilty. I suppose that’s because Japanese values are still ingrained in me.

I made a call to surrender, which wasn’t necessary, and Hans-san pointed that out to me. I’m still too soft.

The view ahead opened up to a vast plain and grain-growing region.

This should put an end to the bandit uprising for now.

If there’s enough magical power left, I’ll go as far as I can.

With that resolve, I continued southward, winding my way through the terrain.

The royal capital of Falmenta—a place I once visited.

I finished mapping the northwestern part of Lagreath, centered on the royal capital, and then continued southward. Its silhouette was visible in the distance.

I connected the map to the area around the “Devour’s Great Hole,” which I had visited before, and continued on to the southwestern part of Lagreath.

The river visible from above might be the Sail River.

Even though only a few months had passed, I felt a little nostalgic. However, I wanted to save the fun for later, so I deliberately started filling in the outer moat along the border.

With just one or two more to go, based on the progress of the mapping…

At that point, I made a few small purchases.

One of them was a wooden box, about a meter square and not that big.

Assuming it would be easy to make an empty wooden box, I carried it with me as I continued flying. About two weeks after leaving the northern town of Savarina…

I saw a familiar sight:

The great forest of Palmera and the genuine Sail River stretching out from it.

It was winter.

Wrapped in a thick coat, I couldn’t help but recall playing in the river with those three under the scorching sun.

Looking to the right, I could see the depths of Palmera, which had once been out of sight.

The landscape was green as far as the eye could see. Thinking back to when I first arrived in this world, I felt emotional seeing such a view from this height.

Ahead lies the town of Bezart, my second home.

As if drawn by a gentle current, I floated upward and finally completed the mapping of this area.

I have viewed many towns from above.

Yet, Bezart strikes me as a place that would be very easy to defend if something were to happen because it seems so small that I feel I could grasp it in my hand.

“I wonder how everyone is doing.”

I really want to go there.

But I promised the three of them that I wouldn’t until I acquired Spatial Magic.

Looking at it from the outside, most people would think that, since I’m so close, I should stop by the town.

I even wonder why I’m staying up in the sky.

Still, I naturally felt that it was the right decision not to stop here.

Returning is one of my biggest goals.

It’s what keeps me working hard. If I give up easily, all my other goals will fade away.

I know I have that flaw in my personality, but it’s my own fault, so I can only laugh bitterly.

Hah…

The breath that escaped my lips was white and melted away.

“Well, let’s go…”

I carried the wooden box and proceeded slightly north along the Sail River. Gradually, I descended until I found the forest I was looking for.

After a while, I ventured deeper into the forest, taking in the familiar landscape.

“There it is!”

There was no way I could forget this place.

It was the bath I had built with all my might and the hole I had once used as my base.

The stone pillars were still at the entrance, and nothing had changed. It was still a good place to spend the night.

Since it was evening, there was no one around, and the place was deserted.

The bath… Huh.

For some reason, there was an unfamiliar pot in the stone-fired area, and it looked like it had been used occasionally.

After checking the area with Investigation, I was happy to find that there weren’t many monsters around, so I decided to use this place as a new hunting ground.

I gathered branches and heated stones, preparing the bath as I had in the past.

Once it was ready, I headed to the hole in the ground.

The interior looked unchanged, except for the leaves that once covered the floor, which were now dry and crispy.

There were no signs of anyone having been there, so I figured no one was determined enough to camp out there.

That’s convenient.

I sorted through the items in the special basket I was carrying and moved some of them into wooden boxes.

The most important item is the armor with holes that protected me.

It was beyond repair and had lost its special properties, but I couldn’t bring myself to throw it away.

However, it was too heavy to carry around, so I decided to leave it here.

As for the rest, I wouldn’t need Kujou-san’s bag for the time being.

The only person who could use it was Liste, but I couldn’t settle down yet.

I packed my suit, leather shoes, and other clothes I had when I first arrived into wooden boxes and stored them in the back of the hole.

I placed the boxes in one of the spaces used for equipment storage and covered them with soil.

This way, no one would be able to take them.

When the time comes, I’ll dig them up again.

Once I’ve decided on a base, I’ll…

I’ll take the cutting board I prepared earlier and get some meat from a nearby oak tree.

Then, I’ll take a bath for the first time in a while, enjoy the luxuries I’ve missed, and gaze at the clear winter sky.

“Drinking alcohol here really is special…”

There are things I couldn’t do before but can now.

Thanks to the wine I bought in advance, I can now try the drinking I wanted to do back then.

This, too, is a form of growth.

So, what should my next dream be?

Soaking in a hot spring while sipping wine and gazing at the sky, pondering leisurely.

Such moments felt precious and happy, and the long night passed alone.
