Chapter 216 – The Destination in Sight

Since visiting the Kingdom of Waltz, I’ve noticed a new trend in the town where I arrived.

I land on the roof of the Hunter’s Guild and head straight to the reference room to gather information.

If it’s not busy, I approach the receptionist and ask about nearby and top-ranked hunting grounds.

As was the case in Lagreath, there are plenty of easy hunting grounds ranked F and E, but the number of hunting grounds ranked D and above suddenly decreases.

Therefore, they have a mental map based on their work knowledge and know that there is a hunting ground like this to the east, even without a map.

There should be a C-ranked hunting ground in this town to the south.

With experience, I can gather a surprising amount of information just by asking around.

By repeating this process wherever I go, the information becomes more reliable.

Even if I don’t mention the name of the town or hunting ground, they will sometimes answer as if they remember when I ask them directly.

As a result, in addition to the B-rank hunting ground that I checked first, I found out that there is one more D-rank hunting ground and two C-rank hunting grounds in the Kingdom of Waltz.

If everything goes according to plan, I will first head to the B-rank hunting ground in the northeast, then to the D-rank hunting ground in the southeast, and finally to the C-rank hunting ground in the southwest before returning to Grille Morg.

Then, I’ll return to the royal capital of Falmenta in Lagreath, purchase a book, map the central area while heading east, stop by the royal capital, and continue eastward through Waltz.

I think I’ll proceed along this route.

By the way, I’ll skip the other C-rank hunting ground.

The Bails Forest, which extends across the northern part of Lagreath and into the Kingdom of Waltz, didn’t seem worth revisiting after reading the reference book.

Ultimately, the monsters that live there seem to be the same green monsters. Even the ogres and upper-level orcs were defeated with the minimum necessary numbers while Lokish was away.

Until now, I guess they were being eaten before they could multiply, but I think they were probably respawning somewhere invisible, and their numbers were being adjusted.

Once I’ve gathered all the information I need from the Hunter’s Guild, I’ll head to the Mercenary Guild.

I have a feeling there are fewer of them than there are of the Hunter’s Guild. However, if there is an E-rank hunting ground, there will usually be a Mercenary Guild in town.

The town of “Rambart” in the northern part of the Kingdom of Waltz, where I am now, is no exception.

I took the request for “capturing and defeating criminals” that I had confirmed in the previous town and submitted the wooden board to the receptionist.

Since the operation is organized by country, it’s helpful that some requests are shared among neighboring towns.

“Hello. I’d like to report on the completion of this request. Is that okay?”

“Huh… Could you tell me the details?”

This was the third time I was taken to a small room to report.

I suppose it’s to prevent information from leaking outside.

During the initial explanation, I didn’t pay much attention to it, but the wooden box in the corner of the room seemed to be a magical barrier to prevent external skill interference.

In this world, the national and private sectors are in opposite positions.

The Mercenary Guild invests a lot of money in things like building interiors and mercenaries’ appearances to attract customers.

On the other hand, the Hunter Guild is like a city hall; it doesn’t spend money on appearances or customer service.

Well, if you think about it, that money is probably going back to the hunters. Personally, I prefer hunters.

“Do you have anything to prove it?”

“No, so please confirm it on-site.”

“Got it. The fee will be 10% of the guild’s standard reward. Where is the location?”

This process has become routine, so I simply convey the leader’s name, the number of members and bodies, and the hideout location verbally.

In the case of the mercenary guild, even a rough map could lead to information leaking to the higher-ups in the country.

Since the guild still has a strong “underground” reputation, I’m careful not to share unnecessary information.

Still, the information gets through because there’s a clear landmark.

“I’ve erected a 30-meter-tall stone pillar using magic. If you follow the road, you should be able to spot it from a distance.”

“…Got it. Once we confirm it, we’ll pay the reward, but—”

“Just deposit it for now. By then, I’ll probably have moved on to another town.”

With that, the quick and efficient administrative procedures with the mercenary guild were mostly complete.

Now, I’ll look at the four-sided board, which is the same everywhere, and pick out a few targets to capture or defeat that I can stop by on the way to my next destination. If I find any while mapping, I’ll hunt them down.

This routine has become my favorite lately because it’s efficient.

By the way, I don’t take food from bandits or thieves, but I bury everything else, except for cash, in an easy-to-find spot nearby.

I store the loot in the hideout, mostly in wooden boxes or leather bags, as I did when I took it from someone.

I bury leather equipment in a simple, stone-covered underground room to prevent it from rotting. I mark the burial locations on the map in my notebook, where I record town names and layouts. I add a special mark for buried items so I won’t forget them.

When I retrieve them, I can use the stone pillars I erected as landmarks. I don’t think I’ll be able to retrieve the items until I acquire Spatial Magic, but I’ll retrieve everything at that time.

Since leaving Grille Morg, I’ve relied on “villains” for skill collection and money.

The next town is the long-awaited B-rank hunting ground:

It’s the town of “Lowenfort,” which houses the Entonia Fire Rock Cave.

I really want to start boosting my stats at a monster hunting ground soon.

Anticipation swelling in my chest, I continued eastward.
