Chapter 219 – Armor After a Long Time

It was a slightly more relaxed morning than usual.

Thinking the shops might not be open yet, I looked around the stalls in the northeast Kingdom of Waltz, gathering information on my way to the armor shop.

I heard that it was a large building near the entrance to the hunting grounds.

Apparently, it has an inn and a blacksmith who specializes in equipment maintenance, so hunters can apparently live comfortably on that street alone.

However, everything is minimal and expensive, so everyone is making the best of what’s available.

If I couldn’t use Flight, I wouldn’t hesitate to sell my materials near the entrance to the hunting grounds, even if the price were low, since I wouldn’t be able to send letters or earn experience points.

(Ooh! That looks delicious!)

I found some skewered meat that looked like beef steak and asked the shopkeeper to recommend an armor shop.

I walked toward the shop while munching on it. It looked like a run-down shack.

Feeling uneasy, I opened the door when I sensed movement inside.

“Oh, come in.”

“Oh, welcome.”

“Huh?”

I was so shaken that I couldn’t help but let a strange Japanese phrase slip out:

(Oh no! A dwarf! And he’s small, just as I expected!)

He was even shorter than me.

He was stocky and barrel-shaped, and his arms were thick with visible veins.

I didn’t use Insight, but he didn’t seem weak.

He gave off an aura that made me feel that way.

He must have come from the Kingdom of Freyville in the east.

His black hair and beard gave him the appearance of a man in his prime. Based on what I had learned, I decided not to mention it and got straight to the point.

“Um, I asked the vendor at the stall for a recommended armor shop, and they directed me here. I want to have armor made with salamander skin that’s resistant to fire.”

“At your age? You look like an ordinary human to me.”

“Yes, I am. But I’m a B-rank Hunter. I went hunting yesterday, so I plan to bring my own materials.”

“Huh, you’re pretty serious. So, what do you want to know?”

O-oh…

Maybe because the dwarf is short, he doesn’t treat me like a child, and our conversation flows smoothly.

I’m amazed that I can shop here normally.

“I’d like to know the cost if I bring my own materials and how long it will take to finish.”

My decision to place the order depends on this information.

If the price isn’t too high and it can be ready in time for the raid, then I’ll ask him to do it.

On the other hand, if it won’t be ready in time, then I’m not sure if I need it.

I might be embarrassed if I don’t have any resistance armor, but I don’t foresee dying at this point.

“If you’re using it in the Fire Rock Cave, full leather armor that covers most of your skin would be better. Depending on the job, some people cover their faces up to their mouths or protect their heads properly. Is that really necessary?”

“Hmm… Do you have any finished products or samples I can see?”

Several pieces of equipment made from bright red salamander leather are on the shelves inside the store.

Honestly, they have a mix of spiky and sexy elements, similar to when you customize decent gear in an RPG or MMO. The bold colors make them pretty cool.

However, there are no decorations on the head, so I can’t imagine what it would look like.

If it resembles full-plate helmets where the head is completely covered, like a bucket, I’d rather pass.

“This one resists heat, so it’s a matter of taste. Here, take a look.”

I took out a few samples from under the counter, and my fingers moved naturally.

“I’ll take this one. I’ll go get the materials right away.”

“If you want a full set, it’ll be B-rank armor. Even if you bring your own materials, it won’t be ready right away. I’ll need at least 2.5 million beeke for that. It’ll take at least six days to make. Is that okay?”

“What?! You can’t use the materials right away?”

“How are you going to use them without tanning them? It’s easier than normal animals, but you still have to work on them before using them.”

“Oh… well, that’s fine. Time isn’t a problem. I’ll go get the materials right away!”

“Hey, wait! At least take the measurements.”

The old dwarf is fussing on the other side of the door, but I don’t feel like going back now.

If it’s just one, I should be able to get back in about fifteen minutes.

I was excited by the ninja-like mask that exposed only the area around the eyes. I thought it was face armor that would appeal to my inner child.

Eager to start production as soon as possible, I dashed off to Entonia’s Fire Rock Cave in search of a salamander.

“Sorry to keep you waiting!”

“I wasn’t waiting.”

I placed the blood-dripping, headless salamander on the counter with a thud.

The dwarf was acting strangely, but I had brought the materials quickly, as promised.

I had no choice but to bring it whole because I had no idea how to handle it.

“Hey, how did you carry the whole thing here?”

“I carried it on my back.”

“I-I see…”

“Wait, maybe one isn’t enough? I can go catch another one right away.”

“No, it’s fine! If there are several of these in front of the store, the neighbors will think we’re weird.”

“It really is huge, isn’t it? Oh, maybe you only need the skin. If not, I can throw the meat and bones away somewhere.”

I was losing my cool, but then I realized that I was making armor.

Usually, only the skin is used, so the meat and bones aren’t needed.

Recently, I’ve only been interested in magic stones, so my knowledge of local materials has become quite limited.

I’m supposed to be a money-grubbing Loki, but this isn’t good.

“Wait a minute. You’re throwing it away? Why would you throw away something you can sell?”

“Well, I’ve been a bit rusty on that kind of knowledge lately. If you’d prefer, I’ll just give you the whole thing. It’d be easier for me.”

“If I’m going to have someone else peel the skin off and sell the usable parts piece by piece, I’d rather give the whole thing away and use that time to hunt.”

When I suggested this, the dwarf seemed to think it was a good deal. He nodded vigorously, so I gladly left the rest to him.

Since the payment was upfront, I had him measure me while I counted the money. I also bought a new knife with a slightly longer blade than the one I had been using.

He gave me a good deal, and we agreed that I would come back in six days to pick it up. I left the store with a big smile on my face.

The whole process took about 40 minutes.

This means I’ll have plenty of time for hunting today.

I don’t think I can convince the old dwarf to add any bonuses, so I’ll have to figure out what to do about that.

Without the item itself, all I can do is gather information.

Should I spend money on this equipment?

I hurried back to the hunting grounds, thinking about what bonuses I could add once it was finished.
