Chapter 234 – Space Between

I poured all the money I had exchanged into the large leather bag that I had bought earlier.

Today’s exchange amount was about 3.15 million Beeke.

This is the most I’ve ever earned from normal hunting. Since it’s only the afternoon, it’s clear that the combination of attribute magic stones and high purchase prices is effective.

The receptionist was thrilled for a moment, but then she backed away. If it’s unpopular and in short supply, though, she must be doing a good job.

However, what should I do with this money?

According to my status screen, I currently have just over 70 million Beeke on hand.

Considering the cost of books, though, it’s barely enough to buy three or four books, so I’m definitely not in a comfortable position.

I’m determined to earn more, but the first large leather bag is stuffed with gold coins, and I’ve left most of my money in my inn room, which is scary.

If a thief breaks in while I’m away, there’s nothing I can do.

I figured that even if I complained to the innkeeper, there’s probably nothing they could do in this civilization.

“Maybe I should just fill it up temporarily…”

Since I’ve already done it elsewhere, that’s the most realistic option.

Once I’m done here, I plan to return to the royal capital of Falmenta and buy all the completed books. I wonder how many more days I’ll stay.

I ponder this as I write down today’s achievements in my notebook.

Shadow Knight: Phantom Lv5, Shadow Walk Lv3, Swordsmanship Lv2, and Dark Attribute Resistance Lv3.

Ghost Menace: Phantom Lv5, Dark Magic Lv2, Earth Bind Lv3, and Dark Attribute Resistance Lv2.

Gray Soul: Phantom Lv4, Attribute Change Lv4, Light Magic Lv3, and Dark Magic Lv3.

Phantom is a monster-only skill and cannot be used, as indicated by the gray text. However, since the initial level is Lv5, I’ll definitely raise it to Lv8.

This is essential for the bonus stat, so I’ll have to continue pushing for at least another three to four days.

If possible, I’d also like to raise Dark Magic to Lv6.

I haven’t thought of any situations where it would be useful yet. However, since there is a monster with Dark Magic Lv3, I should be able to raise it from Lv5 to Lv6 by defeating an additional 500 monsters.

If I can do this while earning money, it won’t be too difficult.

If I hunt that much, I should also be able to raise the gray-text Attribute Change skill to level 7.

I thought this skill would restore my black magic power, but the gray text indicating that it’s unusable is disappointing.

The Earth Bind skill, where hands extend from the ground, was exactly as expected: useless. So, there’s no point in forcing it. The Shadow Step skill, which I was most hopeful about, is also unusable.

“Aaah! Why can’t I use any of them? It would be nice if at least one of them worked!”

At first glance, it seems like there are many new skills, but the four monster-specific skills are ideal for ghosts.

In moments like these, I think, “I’m already dead, so why can’t I use them?” But it doesn’t work that way.

“I really want to use Warp… Shadow Walk…”

I haven’t given up hope yet, but it seems like I can recover all the bonus stats within three to four days.

“The Swordsmanship skill is just a bonus, so I’ll skip it. The only skills that might be useful in the future are Dark Magic and Dark Attribute Resistance, but they’re pretty significant. Oh, what about Light Magic?”

Gray Soul is a unique monster that I’ve never encountered before.

Depending on its state, its skills change even if you use Mind’s Eye to peek at them. When it’s brightly lit, it has Light Magic; when it’s emitting a dark aura, it has Dark Magic.

Since the magic stone is said to be expensive, I’ve only targeted it when it’s in dark mode.

Hmm, maybe I don’t need to force myself to target it. I’ve finally unlocked it.

After giving it some thought, I came to that conclusion.

Thanks to today’s battle, I successfully unlocked the two skills I was aiming for: Curse Magic and Spirit Magic.

As predicted by Estelt-san, whom I rescued in Lipsum, Curse Magic was unlocked upon reaching Dark Magic Lv3. [T/N: I previously called her Estelle.]

Spirit Magic matched Riste’s prediction. The condition is that all eight skills must be level five or higher, so I’m pretty sure that’s correct.

Thinking about it, the conditions for obtaining Spirit Magic seem pretty harsh.

However, if you have an upper-tier occupation, such as the old lady’s (Witch), where all magic skills receive a +2 level boost, then having all skills at level 3 is sufficient.

If you know the “unlock conditions,” even a level 15 Hunter could forcefully clear them, so upon calm reflection, it’s not that bad.

In reality, though, hunters of that level probably haven’t unlocked higher-tier jobs yet, and their total magic power is too low to use them effectively anyway.

Other than that, I’ve been using Activation Standby quite a bit today, getting a feel for it. It seems to be gaining experience.

Hmmm?

Looking at the skill tree, I noticed something odd:

“Why is Non-Attribute Magic gaining experience?”

I didn’t expect that at all.

I thought it would be good to increase the experience points for Non-Attribute Magic, so I continued practicing materializing magic while flying.

However, it didn’t increase, and I complained to myself about how to increase it.

Now it’s at “20%.”

It’s a very familiar number.

I hadn’t seen any monsters using Non-Attribute Magic, a skill I’d jump at, but…

What could this mean?

Is the culprit the slime, or…

Sighing, I made a tentative guess, considering the various possibilities for the skill experience points I couldn’t afford to lose. Then, I crawled back under the blankets.

The next day,

I buried the money in the ground, just like the bandits’ loot, and immediately started hunting.

I ran around the ruins, which were covered in white fog, alone.

―Ignite―

It was already an unpopular hunting ground, and it was just after the morning bell had rung.

There were only ghosts around. Even if they saw me in this form, it wouldn’t matter.

I wrapped my sword in flames and slashed at the magic stone without touching it.

“This grudge will last for generations!”

“I’m worried about whether I can have children, you idiot!”

The Ghost Menace utters its last words and disappears without burning because it has no physical form.

The flames also seem to be considered magic. Although they don’t help me conserve magic power, I find them helpful.

If I defeat the monster with long-range magic, it’s difficult to retrieve the magic stone.

Having defeated the obstacle blocking my path, I charge straight toward my target monster.

“One, two, three… one, two… there!”

Ignoring the Dark Magic cast at the last moment, I aim for the brief moment between the sword’s swing and the target’s next movement, thrusting my sword.

I got it! It was definitely “colorless”! The timing was perfect!

“You have acquired Non-Attribute Magic Lv1.”

“Yes!”

Time for a victory pose!

Even though it’s just a level one skill, I couldn’t help but strike a victory pose with all my might.

Since I had never played that kind of game in Japan before, I was unfamiliar with it at first and had a hard time getting the hang of it.

My lack of rhythm is probably part of the problem.

On my first try, I succeeded on my ninth attempt. Then, on my fifth attempt, I succeeded again. Since then, I’ve been able to strike the moment when it temporarily becomes colorless about once every three attempts.

Okay, okay.

For now, I’m satisfied with acquiring the skill.

I can use all my remaining magic power for this, so I can expect a slight increase in experience points.

For now, I’ll stop aiming for that and focus on making a fortune with dark-attribute magic stones while urgent, high-priced purchase requests are available.

After that, I’ll switch to aiming for Non-Attribute Magic, keeping an eye on the situation.

Even if I fail, I’ll gain experience points in Dark or Light Magic, so I won’t lose anything other than the value of the magic stones.

At the very least, I want to raise Non-Attribute Magic to level three. If I can improve the accuracy rate a little more, I’d like to raise it to level four.

If you don’t know what monsters you have, it’s best to level them up here to make acquiring Spatial Magic easier.

I thought this would take 3-4 days, but it might take longer in this town.

With these thoughts in mind, I lit a fire to keep warm and quickly fended off any monsters that appeared.
