Chapter 298 – Treasure Labyrinth

Day 2 in Ortran.

It’s a huge city where sand is quite noticeable. The dry air and large lake give it an oasis-like feel.

After arriving in Sanur, I looked up at the palace-like building that I had reached by gathering information while snacking on street food.

Above the large entrance hung a sign I recognized instantly, depicting swords and staffs.

(No way…)

Apparently, this is the town’s Hunter Guild, as well as the entrance to the dungeon.

I expected the entrance to be underground because the dungeon is called an “underground labyrinth,” but I never imagined it would be inside a building, or that the Hunter Guild would manage it.

Even inside, the construction was distinctly different from anything I had seen before.

Usually, turning right inside led to a quiet training ground. Here, however, the right side was bustling and crowded with people coming and going.

That meant the place I was looking for was probably over there.

As I walked down the corridor, I passed several burly middle-aged men.

“Whoa…”

A sight that made me gasp spread out before me.

It was a spacious area, even larger than the training grounds.

Numerous chairs and tables filled the space. Some people were eating or drinking, while others were seen dividing money among themselves.

It was a familiar sight, yet the area felt about ten times larger than the usual reception lobby.

The “rice” I was looking for wasn’t there, but several different shops offering food were on the left side, giving the place an atmosphere reminiscent of a modern food court.

The scene on the right was also fresh and interesting.

“Free Rental,” “Seed Purchase,” “Mineral Purchase,” “Weapon Purchase,” “Accessory Purchase,” “Rare Item Purchase,” “Appraisal Office,” “Market Price Consultation,” “Auction Listings,” “Creature Purchase.”

Along the wall, signs were lined up like market stalls, each displaying a specialized shop.

Directly ahead was a large stone staircase leading down to the basement.

Beside it, two women sat at a counter, presumably as guides.

“Hello. This is my first time in a dungeon. Is it okay to just go in?”

“It’s fine, but you can’t leave without a Hunter License. Please register as a Hunter first.”

“Ah, I’m a Hunter, so that’s taken care of.”

“Then please pick up the five-piece set at the free rental counter over there.”

“Huh? A five-piece set?”

I looked over, wondering what it was. An old man beckoned me over with a beaming smile.

Drawn in, I walked over. There were five items: a “leather pouch,” a “large basket,” a “broom,” a “dustpan,” and a “rope.”

“Use the broom and dustpan to collect seeds, then put them in the leather bag. The basket is basically for creatures. If you catch a big one, you can pull it out with the rope. Usually, though, it’s better to sell them to the folks staying inside. Some folks bring cooking gear or sleeping bags to camp out, but you’re empty-handed, kid. You’re probably just doing a day trip, right?”

“Yeah, I guess so.”

Before I knew it, I was handed a five-piece set packed into a basket. Kindly enough, it was strapped right onto my back.

Ah, so this is how everyone heads into the dungeon.

Since I’d planned to go straight in and out of the base, I almost started worrying about what to do with this load.

(Well, it’s my first day. Might as well go with the flow of normal people today.)

Cheering myself up, I started down the stairs to the underground.

“Ohoho! This is getting exciting!”

After descending what felt like 15 to 20 meters, I reached the first floor.

With each step, the view gradually widened, just as I’d hoped, and my footsteps naturally grew lighter.

The ground and walls were a uniform brown color, and torches hung at regular intervals along the walls. The interior extended deep into the darkness and was divided into rooms and corridors with varying degrees of light and shadow.

“Wind, Whirling Blades, Shatter the Walls!”

Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!

I’d expected this based on the book’s content, but I never imagined it’d be so much like a game.

The walls and floor seem indestructible, and the light sources neither disappear nor break. This is truly a beginner-friendly dungeon.

Then again, maybe all dungeons are like this, regardless of difficulty.

If that’s the case… Oh wow, seriously?

Opening the “Map” displays an unfamiliar screen. Stepping into the room ahead of the view causes a new room to be “mapped.”

Unlike the outside world, a separate map exists specifically for the dungeon.

Given that it’s called a labyrinth, each floor may be fairly large.

Seriously, though.

What the hell? What the hell is this world?

It was so incomprehensible that I found myself humming it. Yet, it was fun.

―Mind’s Eye―

“Gugii!”

“… “

Next up: Teleport.

I teleported over the town, then immediately returned to the room I had just left.

All right, teleporting within the dungeon works, but the mobs haven’t respawned yet.

Unlike the boss room outside, respawning here happens over time, not with a restart.

Since this isn’t my optimal dungeon level anyway, I’ll check the respawn cycle later if necessary on the lower floors.

“Gii!?”

But they’re weak.

The attackers were kobolds wielding axes and daggers, but their strength was on par with Palmera’s goblins.

It’s the first floor of a beginner dungeon, so it’s only natural. But they’re ridiculously weak. I could probably take them down with a flick of my finger.

The moment the monsters fell, their bodies, including their weapons, dissolved like smoke and vanished.

What remained instead was—

“This is the seed, huh?”

About four small seeds lay scattered on the ground.

Ah, I see. Now I understand why they gave me a broom and dustpan.

But still…

―Investigation――Seed―

Hmm.

Originally, seeds had no demand. Picking them up was a hassle, and they piled up like trash in dungeon corners.

I expected this level of carelessness, but there’s a dedicated seed-buying spot, and the room is clean. The demand and buy price for seeds might be higher than expected.

“Well, I guess I’ll just have to dive in and see.”

First, I wanted to see enemies other than the not-so-tasty kobolds through my Mind’s Eye.

Did new monsters and skills actually exist?

After removing my armor, I grabbed the broom and dustpan, prioritizing agility as I began mapping the dungeon quickly.
