Chapter 74 – Participation in the War

(Even goddesses have a sense of shame. This is a wonderful discovery).

Thinking of such a helpless thing, I ran after the party, which moved away from me a little.

The party is still stuck with two orcs, and the well-built man with the axe is acting as their leader, trying to keep them at bay, while the one with the staff and the porter with the basket on his back are moving between them and the one with the spear is moving at a short run towards the exit of the forest.

(Is it possible that the man with the spear is running away at the moment he is confronted by the orcs? If so…)

“Sorry! I’m here to help you if you’re in trouble, what do you want me to do?”

Then the axe man notices me and shouts loudly. He must be in a hurry.

“!? Is that true? That would be a great help! Can you take care of one for me?”

“I understand~”

To be honest, this is my first battle with orcs.

Even though I said I understood, I’m not sure I can even hold one.

But when the small wolf hit me with its body, I thought, is this the end of it?

Orcs with green figures are big, but…

The closer you get to them, the more intimidating they are!

Still, I had a strange feeling of security that I would probably be alright.

I think I underestimated the orcs even before the fight when I thought I’d move away from the party so that the experience wouldn’t flow into theirs.

In its hand was a log that looked as big as my thigh.

As I approached, the orcs seemed to notice, and one of them swung the log at me.

(Small wolves are much faster… I can afford to dodge them).

With that in mind, I dive under the log and slash the arm that was swinging at me.

But, of course, it is not a fatal wound.

(As the position to the neck is high… Should I slash its legs and bring it to its knees first?)

With that in mind, I was just about to slash at it, shifting my view to its legs, when my Presence Detection picked up a strange movement.

(Huh? Why is the other one on me, too… ugh!)

My vision spins.

When I thought I saw the sky, I saw dirt and realized I was rolling on the ground when I hit a tree and stopped moving.

I wasn’t moving much, but I was breathing hard, of course.

“Hah… hah… shit! …Why are they both coming at me?”

Looking at where they would have been earlier, the party of four was nowhere to be seen.

“Seriously… I saved them and they just pushed them right at me…?”

The orc’s attack earlier, I was also in attack mode, and when I realized I couldn’t avoid it, I used my arm to protect myself.

I quickly checked the condition of my arm.

“Huh. I knew it. If I take a real hit, I’ll be blown away―but there’s not much damage. So it’s all thanks to the Poison Resistance.”

If that’s the case, it won’t be hard to defeat it.

“You guys need to prepare yourselves, okay? I won’t die even if I get hit a hundred times, okay?”

After making such a fearless declaration, I slashed at the two orcs.

“Ria-sama, I’m sorry about before. I’m done now, it’s fine.”

“Hmm.”

I still feel a bit grumpy, but it was an unavoidable event, so there’s nothing I can do about it.

With the stone pillar I had made as a landmark, I returned to the tree where Ria-sama was hiding and thought about how to get her down.

“If you come down, I will hold the stone pillar while…”

Pyon――

“No problem.”

“Oh, I see…”

I’m slightly intimidated by the goddess’s physical abilities, but I continue the conversation.

“Well, I’ll leave the orcs where they are for now, so I’ll go back and start dismantling them.”

“Okay. More importantly, have you been all right?”

“Hmm?”

“You got blown up so many times.”

“Oh… I think I’ve got a pretty good defense, so I’ll be fine. I never thought they’d shove both of them into me, though.”

“I was watching.”

“The part where the party escaped too?”

“Yes. The one with the axe was worried, but… the one with the spear didn’t stop and kept going, and the others followed.”

“I see…”

“…..”

I start to dismantle it, but I can’t really concentrate.

The reason, of course, is the behavior of the party that just occurred.

I know that I have to do something, but the work is slow.

Hah… I’ll talk to Ria-sama if I have to.

“Ria-sama.”

“What?”

“I don’t want to do anything that would harm people without any reason. But… if someone does something unreasonable like that, or does something that I think is different, I can’t bring myself to forgive them as it is.”

“Yes.”

“Then it would be strange to call it retaliation… but is the idea of making them pay for their behaviour strange?”

“Not at all?”

“I guess you’re right… Huh?”

“It’s not strange at all.”

“Huh? Ria-sama is a goddess, right? Aren’t you usually negative about such things?”

“I’m the goddess of punishment and sin, remember?”

“That’s right.”

“It is Alicia who is bothered by such things.”

“So my retaliation is okay with you?”

“A crime is punished by punishment. You can do whatever you want as long as it falls within the scope of that crime.”

“Ria-sama… I understand! Your likability is skyrocketing! Ria-sama and I might get along well!”

“!!! B-but I am not aware of all the laws that humans make. So if something goes wrong, Loki is responsible for his own actions.”

“Of course. I was afraid that I would have to put up with a lot of things because I had abilities I didn’t understand, or overlook things that were harmful to me. I’m really glad you didn’t say that.”

“That’s all right for now. Today, I know that the skills of the monsters don’t seem to be much, and I also know that Loki doesn’t have the atmosphere to do any harm himself.”

“That’s right. I’m just an ordinary person living a small life.”

“Fufu, I don’t think an ordinary person would be well after being beaten by an orc.”

“T-that may be true, but…!”

“Just lewd, there’s no denying that.”

“Gghh… It was an accident, but I won’t dare deny it.”

After that, I made my way to the exit of the forest, saying it was time to go back while defeating the monsters I had glimpsed on the way.

As it turned out, orcs have no monster-specific skills, and the only skill they had was the level 2 skill Stick Art.

Needless to say, I was disappointed because I hadn’t planned on using Stick Art, and when I went hunting for the Rig Spider while Ria-sama was around, I found that I could successfully acquire it but that I couldn’t use the Sticky Thread skill.

Even after acquiring it, the letters remained dark and unusable, even though I had the skill level and status bonus.

On the other hand, this seems to have eliminated the possibility of me gradually becoming a monster, so in a way, I can rest easy.

“There are skills that can be acquired but not used―this is the first time I’ve heard this information.”

“That’s right. If it is a skill that can be learnt by humans, there is no such thing as not being able to use it even though it has been acquired.”

“That’s a relief. I was wondering what I would do if Loki ever started using Dragon’s Breath or something like that.”

“Eh… That’s awfully tempting! I want to spit the breath out!”

“It’ll make your mouth all gooey, won’t it?”

“Probably. I can’t dream, Ria-sama.”

This will not be a typical party.

The goddess is with me, and first of all, she is a split entity, and she has not participated in any battles.

I can say that it was more like a party when I accompanied Zink-kun and the others.

Then what is this?

We went to a forest where monsters appeared.

I just defeated the monsters there and quietly did the dismantling work that would horrify earthlings.

But…

I guess you could say this is the first date I’ve been on in a long time.

With that in mind, we spent the next three hours after leaving the forest chatting quietly as we made our way towards the city.

It was an unexpectedly pleasant time, and I didn’t even notice that I’d forgotten my usual jog.
