Chapter 744 - 50: True Meaning!
Chapter 744: Chapter 50: True Meaning!
At the outskirts of the Lost Tower, on the edge of the dark Forest, the atmosphere was tense and ready to erupt.
Lynch and Alfred stood separated by an invisible boundary—the edge of the residual energy of the Purgatory Magic Array, quietly staring at each other. The air was filled with a strong scent of blood, the lingering breath of the Death Rule, and a more dangerous tension stemming from the fateful entanglement between the two.
Alfred, who had always been vigilant in the shadows, appeared in such a dramatic manner, and cleanly dealt with Cyrus at the outset. This truly surprised Lynch, raising his alertness to the highest level.
Alfred’s grey eyes seemed to pierce through the human heart. He curved his lips into a knowing arc, breaking the silence first: "What’s wrong? Judging by your expression, it seems you’re very surprised by my appearance?"
Lynch didn’t deny it and directly asked the question in his heart: "I indeed don’t quite understand. What act are you performing? Infighting within the same camp?"
Alfred shrugged indifferently, his tone as casual as if discussing the ingredients for dinner: "It’s nothing serious. I just happen to lack a piece of ’experimental material’ that meets specific conditions lately, and Cyrus... he just happened to qualify."
Referring to a powerful Wizard from the same camp as mere "experimental material" so lightly showed a coldness and indifference that made Lynch’s eyes narrow involuntarily, a cold light flashing: "So you planned all this from the start? Watching us fight to the death, knowing that whichever side lost would become your prey?"
"You could say that."
Alfred admitted frankly, then, as if remembering something, split his mouth into an unsettling smile mixed with greed and teasing, "However, you need to know that around here, Cyrus isn’t the only ’material’ that meets my conditions. Although the other few Domains on your side are of inferior quality, they... can barely be used."
Lynch’s heart trembled, fully realizing the other’s intention: "I see. The mantis catches the cicada, unaware of the oriole behind. No matter which of our sides emerges victorious, the other, weakened after a hard battle, will fall into your hands. Such a clever calculation."
Alfred timely showed an exaggeratedly sorrowful expression: "Don’t paint me too cold-blooded, Lynch. In my heart, I actually hope you can win. After all, you’re supposed to be... my only friend in this world, aren’t you?"
His tone held a nauseatingly false warmth.
"Friend?" Lynch retorted with a cold laugh, "Your ’friendship’ is too burdensome for me to bear."
While speaking, Lynch moved half a step forward imperceptibly and extremely slowly, the power of the Triple Domain quietly circulating within him, spiritual power highly concentrated, like a poised viper, targeting Alfred, ready to strike with thunderous force at any moment.
This guy was too dangerous; whether for past grievances or to eliminate future threats, Lynch felt that as long as there was an opportunity, he must eliminate him as soon as possible!
However, as if possessing a Mind Reading Technique, Alfred once again precisely grasped his intention. He raised his newly grown, pale hand and waved it, his tone carrying a hint of warning:
"Save it, I know what you’re thinking. But I advise you, don’t do anything foolish."
He pointed to the invisible boundary ahead, a mocking smile of control on his lips: "Your current strength is but a borrowed illusion, not truly yours. Once you dare cross this line, leaving the range of the Magic Array... You know very well what the result will be."
He paused, his tone becoming firm and full of superiority: "Although I’m unclear about where exactly you ’stole’ so much power and knowledge to come this far. But I can assure you—"
His voice suddenly intensified, carrying an obsessive conviction: "You cannot be my match!"
"My initial judgment cannot be wrong! Between you and me, only I, Alfred, am more suited for this Wizard’s Road! Only I can reach the end!"
Lynch’s brows furrowed tightly, his eyes flickered rapidly.
After a moment.
Balancing pros and cons, he finally suppressed the impulse to act immediately, halting his advancing steps.
Alfred’s words were indeed true. Once outside the Magic Array, his strength would instantly fall back to the Middle Domain.
And the true strength of the Alfred before him, the strange means he wielded, Lynch had yet to fully grasp. In a less-than-optimal state, embarking on a reckless cross-boundary death match made the outcome indeed uncertain.
After a moment of silence, Lynch changed the subject, attempting to discern the true goal behind Alfred’s actions: "What’s your ultimate goal in scheming like this, betraying companions, and harvesting the strong?"
"Goal?"
Alfred seemed to hear an incredibly laughable question, emitting a sharp chuckle, "Isn’t it obvious? To keep moving forward! To climb higher mountains, to gain greater strength!"
He looked at Lynch with a near-pitying gaze, shaking his head: "Truly pathetic, Lynch. Even now, you don’t seem to truly understand what kind of world we’re in? Haven’t you grasped the true meaning of the Wizard’s Road yet?"
Lynch followed his words: "Oh? Then I’d like to hear, what’s the ’true meaning’ you’ve grasped?"
Alfred spread his arms wide as though proclaiming some sacred doctrine, his tone becoming grand and fervent, tinged with a twisted enthusiasm:
"In light of our past pitiable connections, I will be merciful and tell you."
"What is the true meaning of the Wizard’s Road?"
"It’s loneliness!"
"Loneliness?" Lynch echoed.
"Exactly! It’s loneliness!" Alfred nodded heavily, the cold fire burning in his grey eyes, "On this path full of thorns, difficult and brutal, there are no true friends or companions, no eternal positions or camps! The only constant is oneself! Every decision, every action, must stem from a self-centered starting point!"
His voice grew increasingly exalted, carrying an undeniable obsessiveness: "At any cost! Regardless of consequences! Anything that can bring personal improvement, that can help oneself step towards a higher level, is correct! It’s what must be done!"
"Pillage, deception, betrayal, slaughter... these are merely tools to achieve the goal! This is the only eternal true meaning of the Wizard’s Road!" He stared intently at Lynch, as though imparting truth, "Only by grasping and practicing this can one walk further on the Wizard’s Road, truly becoming a great, transcendent Wizard!"
Lynch remained silent for a moment, digesting this extremely self-centered philosophy, then spoke with a trace of clear sarcasm: "So, according to your ’true meaning’, Teacher Murphy, Yina... and Cyrus just now, are merely ’stepping stones’ on your path of growth, to be discarded or even harvested at will, aren’t they?"
When the name "Yina" left Lynch’s mouth, Alfred’s fanatical gaze subtly wavered, a faint thread of surprise and understanding flickered through.
"Yina..." he repeated softly, then looked up at Lynch, his tone becoming somewhat nuanced, "So you know that name..."
A flash of realization gripped his grey eyes as he slowly uttered: "It seems, the reason the Resentful Spirit that foolish woman became after death could break free from constraints and seek you out... was indeed your doing, right?"
He wore an expression of "I should have thought of that long ago": "I should have guessed. To so accurately crack the Soul Imprisonment Array I set up, to disrupt my connection with the Resentful Spirit... who else could it be but another pair of ’Eyes of Death God’?"
His expression turned cold, glaring at Lynch: "You certainly caused me quite some trouble!"
