Chapter 555: Chapter 554, The Secret is Discovered_1

Jiang Lan said, "Okay, stop it. Aren’t we just giving others something to laugh about? Let’s focus on our cultivation."

Their playful scuffle indeed attracted the attention of many Wanderers.

"Boss Jiang, what are you two up to?" a Wanderer asked as he approached.

Jiang Long retorted, "Pei Zhaogang, what’s it to you?"

Pei Zhaogang, looking at the snake meat, chuckled. "Jiang Long, you guys are so lucky! You hunted a White Bear Monster yesterday and a Mang Beast today. Quite the haul, haven’t you?"

"What, are you jealous?" Jiang Long shot back.

"Of course, I’m jealous! Did you stumble upon a good hunting spot? Share the news with your little brother here, so I can also go hunt an Abnormal Beast for a change. You see, I’ve had bad luck today—only managed to bag three rabbits, barely enough to make ends meet," Pei Zhaogang said slowly.

Hunting Abnormal Beasts in the icy, snowy wilderness wasn’t easy. Especially in the vast expanse of snow, finding them was very difficult.

Pei Zhaogang was puzzled. How is Jiang Long’s luck so good? A White Bear Monster yesterday and a Mang Beast today? Since when were they so prosperous?

Pei Zhaogang knew Jiang Long’s group often hunted in areas with deep snow. It was incredibly easy to exhaust one’s energy there, and if they failed to hunt any Abnormal Beasts, they could very well freeze to death. In such places, even walking was a problem, let alone hunting Abnormal Beasts.

No sooner had Pei Zhaogang finished speaking than other Wanderers started looking over, their curiosity piqued. Teams generally knew each other, much like in a Legion—you know me, I know you. They, too, found the situation strange.

"Jiang Long, we’re all friends here. If you’ve found a good spot, you should share it, not keep it to yourself," one Wanderer called out.

Another chimed in, "Brother Long, that’s not fair of you, hogging it all. Are we even friends? Besides, it’s obvious you ate your fill before coming back. You think we don’t know?"

"We can sense the energy from Abnormal Beast flesh!" a third exclaimed. "It’s clearly from an adult Python, at least several hundred pounds. Yet you only brought back a little. Are you trying to pass it off as rabbit meat?"

"Brother Long’s quite the schemer," someone else remarked. "I bet you ran into that Monster Python right after setting out and finished most of it in the wild!"

"Trying to pull a fast one on us, Brother Long?"

Jiang Long was so furious he could almost spit blood.

It was true. Just as they’d said, Jiang Long’s group had consumed most of the meat in the wild, only returning to the stronghold at dusk. If there hadn’t been so much meat, they might have finished it all out there. This was a common tactic among Wanderers. Unexpectedly, their ruse had been seen through upon their return. These Wanderers were all old hands; such simple tricks couldn’t fool them.

"It was just luck, nothing more," Jiang Long insisted.

Luck? Pei Zhaogang silently scoffed. They certainly didn’t think so.

Pei Zhaogang simply smiled without a word and turned to leave.

Jiang Long whispered, "Damn that Pei Zhaogang! He actually figured it out. Now we’re in a bind. I bet he’ll be tailing us tomorrow, and then our secret will be out."

Jiang Yan nodded. "Indeed. The moment Pei Zhaogang approached, I knew he was up to no good. Tomorrow, it won’t just be him; other Wanderers will follow us too."

"We walk tomorrow," Jiang Hu declared, his voice cold.

The others looked at him. Walking—without stilts. That way, no one would follow, and their secret would remain safe. The stilts allowed them to traverse the snow as if gliding on wind, conserving a great deal of energy. For Wanderers, this was an invaluable advantage.

Jiang Long nodded. "Alright, that’s the plan for tomorrow."

Jiang Chen remained silent. Truthfully, the secret of the stilts would get out eventually; it was only a matter of time, he thought.

「The next morning.」

Jiang Chen and his group of four companions left the stronghold, only to find a large band of Wanderers tailing them.

Jiang Long and his team stopped and turned back, glaring. "What do you want? If you’re leaving, go on ahead!"

"Brother Jiang, we just want to tag along and get a bite to eat," one Wanderer pleaded.

"Yeah, Brother Jiang, don’t be angry!" another added.

"You go your way, we’ll go ours. It’s as simple as that."

"Please, Brother Jiang, you go first."

Three or four teams, numbering several dozen people in total, stuck to them like burrs.

Jiang Yan whispered, "What do we do? This many people following us is going to be a problem."

"It’s fine," Jiang Long said. "Just keep walking."

Jiang Chen spoke up, "You four go on ahead. Find the stilts and leave quickly. I’ll hold them off; I’m fast."

The other four looked at Jiang Chen. They had never seen him in action and didn’t know if he could actually stop so many Wanderers.

Jiang Hu nodded. "Alright. Be careful. We’ll go hunting; you don’t need to come with us."

Jiang Long added, "Be careful, Jiang Chen. We’ll handle the hunt. Don’t worry, with the five of us, you’ll still get your share."

Jiang Chen nodded.

The four of them quickly departed, leaving Jiang Chen standing in the path to confront the pursuing Wanderers.

Jiang Chen drew his Sharp Sword, a slight smile on his face. "Gentlemen, perhaps it’s best if you stay here."

"Kid, you think you alone can stop all of us?" one sneered.

"Ignore him! Jiang Long must have a secret hunting ground. We need to catch up quickly!" another urged.

"Trying to stop us by yourself? You’re courting death!"

"Let’s go together!"

"They’re getting away!"

The group of Wanderers surged forward, but in the next instant, Jiang Chen executed One Sword.

SHLICK!

A line appeared in the snow before them. Everyone froze.

One Wanderer, unable to restrain himself, leaped forward, his sword aimed at Jiang Chen.

Jiang Chen instantly activated Lingbo Weibu.

SWOOSH!

He dodged, and with a swift counter-slash, his sword opened a bloody gash on the attacker’s hand.

Everyone stared, stunned.

So strong! Such speed! This person is no weakling!

Jiang Chen smiled. "Why force my hand, gentlemen? The next strike won’t be just a minor injury. It could be fatal."

The remaining Wanderers looked at Jiang Chen, then at their injured companion, and reluctantly retreated. Their hopes of profiting from Jiang Long’s success were dashed. Numbers meant nothing against such skill. In the Wanderer World, no one wanted to waste True Qi unless it was a life-or-death struggle. Once True Qi was severely depleted, it was incredibly difficult to recover, especially when food was scarce.

The Wanderers dispersed.

"Who was that kid just now? I’ve never seen him. When did such an expert appear around here?" one of the retreating Wanderers muttered.

"That kid... he looked familiar," another mused. "Wait, I think he’s the Swordsman the Sword Sect is looking for! Yes, his name is Jiang Chen! He’s the one!"

"I heard the Sword Sect is searching for someone who knows the Wan Jian Gui Clan technique. That must be him!"

"Should we report this to the Sword Sect immediately? I heard there’s a reward—a hundred pounds of meat!"

"No time to waste! Let’s go back and inform the Sword Sect experts right away!"

「 」

Jiang Chen, light as a swallow, quickly followed Jiang Long and the others, swiftly catching up to them.
