Chapter 135 – Breakthrough

The breakthrough came the following week.

‘Your Dungeon Master job rank has risen to A!’

“…Phew, finally.”

As I muttered this, a group of writhing shadow tentacles―Shadow Ropers―were fighting in front of me.

But they weren’t fighting as my enemies.

It was the Shadow Roper, a secret monster I’d summoned, that was fighting.

As a secret floor boss, Shadow Roper could have been summoned in the skill world using the Summon Secret Monster skill.

However, in the job world, the equivalent of Summon Secret Monster is split into Usurper’s Card Summoning and Dungeon Master’s Monster Creation.

With Summon Secret Monster, I can summon any secret monster I’ve defeated at any time.

The Usurper skill, however, is not a summoning skill but a system that turns the target into a card by using Usurpation of Authority.

The Dungeon Master’s monster creation is also limited to the dungeon he has created, so it is not possible to summon monsters anywhere.

With Summon Secret Monster, you could strengthen the summoned monster by giving it a name to make it unique, but the Usurper card doesn’t have that feature.

This problem could be seen as an example of the conversion of skills to jobs working against me.

However, after much trial and error, I found a loophole.

The Dungeon Master’s description says this,

Job──────────────────

You have little direct combat ability, but you can place monsters and traps in dungeons as long as resources allow. This ability is severely limited in dungeons other than the one you manage.

────────────────────

That’s what it says.

This means that a Dungeon Master is only a Dungeon Master when they are in a dungeon that they manage.

However, if you read this restriction the other way around, it means that you can also use it in dungeons that you don’t manage but with severe limitations.

Realizing this, I tried to create a Shadow Roper in the post-collapse Okutama Lake dungeon.

But this attempt failed.

It’s a total impossibility in an S-rank dungeon.

It’s asking too much for a new C-rank Dungeon Master to try to create powerful monsters.

In the end, the only monsters I was able to create in the post-collapse Okutama Lake dungeon were the weakest of the weak, including slimes.

What’s more, their levels don’t even exceed 100.

Creating monsters as a Dungeon Master also costs something.

Even creating a Lv.10 slime will cost you a lot of MP.

There is also the option to mass produce them using mana coins, but it is impossible to take on even a single Arc Sahagin if your level is below 100.

There’s no point in spending precious resources creating monsters that don’t even increase your combat power.

It would be better to summon Hobijinkai and the others that have been turned into cards using the Usurper skill.

However, there is no guarantee that I can summon them again if they die from Grim Reaper’s instant kill attack.

The secret monsters were a little too tricky to use, but they were monsters that I had fought alongside.

I felt attached to them, so I didn’t want to use them in a way that would cause them to be lost.

For a while after coming to this conclusion, I put the Dungeon Master’s monster creation to the back of my mind.

However, as the strategy for the dungeon became more refined and the summer break for Saber Saber approached, my impatience grew.

I kept reading my own status over and over again, grasping at straws to see if there were any elements I had overlooked.

I remember that moment.

It was the first time I entered the dungeon.

I was despairing about my stats, but thanks to my conversation with Serika, I realized the great potential of my skills.

There’s nothing I, a C-rank Dungeon Master, can do in the S-rank post-collapse Okutama Lake Dungeon.

But what about other dungeons?

For example, what about the Black Swan Forest Water Park Dungeon, which is a C-rank dungeon?

I tried to create a monster in the Water Park Dungeon right away, and I managed to create a Shadow Roper Lv.1.

You might be thinking, “Oh, it’s only level 1.”

But there’s more to the story.

I used my Dungeon Master skills to give the Shadow Roper Lv.1 a name.

Just like the Summon Secret Monster skill, you can name monsters created in dungeons.

Immediately after that, a new sensation arose in my senses.

As if guided by that feeling, I reached up into the air and the Shadow Roper Lv.1 I had just named turned into a card.

It was a secret monster specification card with lots of glitter and holographic effects.

The name engraved on the card was Shadow Yasha.

It was the name I had just given it.

So I tried to summon Shadow Yasha with this card…

“I never thought that the best possibility would be the right one.”

In front of me, having just finished remembering, was Shadow Yasha, formerly known as Shadow Roper.

The clone that was created using the Projective Split is entangling the Grim Reaper with its shadow tentacles.

I stare at Shadow Yasha with half-closed eyes,

Level 10200, Multi-Headed Serpent

Is displayed.

Level 10200.

This is the level of the Shadow Roper when I defeated it.

The specs for the Summon Secret Monster skill state that “the level of the summoned monster is the highest of the summoner’s level, the level of the monster at the time of defeat, and the level of any other monsters that can be summoned.”

The Shadow Roper, which the Dungeon Master could barely create at level 1, would be summoned using the Usurper’s Usurpation of Authority, and the original Summon Secret Monster specifications would apply.

Furthermore, even Shadow Roper, which the Dungeon Master could not create due to the difference in status between the dungeon and the monster, can be summoned without problems when summoned as a card by Usurper.

The difference between the skill specifications in the skill world and the abilities in the job world, as well as the multiple sets of advanced jobs that, should also be rare in this world.

This is probably the result of the two meshing well together.

But the same can be said for the other secret monsters up to this point.

So what makes the Shadow Yasha, formerly known as the Shadow Roper, superior to other secret monsters?

It’s the ability to create clones using Projective Split, of course.

If I leave the main body behind and use the clones it creates to attack the Grim Reaper with light, only the clones will be hit by the instant death attack.

What’s more, the main body has the unique bonus “Abnormal Status ‘Instant Death’ Resistance,” and this bonus also applies to the clones.

When I actually tried it out, I was able to defeat the Grim Reaper more often than not before the instant death attack hit.

Since creating a clone is almost free, even a 50-50 chance is enough.

I also have a Projective Split card that I stole from a Shadow Roper in a floor boss fight.

However, the clones I created with Projective Split were only able to perform very basic actions, such as ‘grab without thinking.’

I was using a skill designed for a group of Ropers, so it was a bit of a stretch.

It would be useful as a decoy in an emergency, but it would be impossible to use it in the same way as the so-called art of illusion.

Anyway, thanks to Shadow Yasha, the Grim Reapers on the way were no longer a threat.

What’s more, if I go back to the beginning, Shadow Yasha is a monster created using the Dungeon Master skill.

Just by summoning Shadow Yasha and having him fight, the Dungeon Master’s rank increases.

By the time I reached the deepest part of the second floor, my Dungeon Master rank had already reached A.

“Should I try to reach S rank before the floor boss?”

I muttered to myself in the safety zone outside the boss room.

But,

“No, that’s out of the question.”

Dungeon Master is not a job that lends itself to combat.

I don’t think my combat power would increase dramatically even if I reached rank S.

“So it’s just a waste of time?”

A Dungeon Master in an enemy dungeon is like a fish out of water.

Even if I get to rank S and can do more things, it’s meaningless if it’s only in the dungeon I’m managing.

“And it’s not very efficient.”

It should be more efficient to try and get higher ranks in floor boss fights than to stay with weak enemies along the way.

Of course, if I die, it’s all for nothing.

However, if I use Shadow Yasha’s clones as a shield, it shouldn’t be too bad.

As long as I’m prevented from leveling up, it’s hard to become stronger than I already am by staying on the second floor.

“Okay, let’s go.”

After resting in the safety zone in front of the floor boss, I entered the boss’ room while hiding in the shadow of Shadow Yasha.

The floor boss on the second floor was a normal floor boss, not a secret one.

It’s a monster called the Nether Cerberus, which is like a giant version of the Baby Cerberus I fought on the way here.

It’s huge.

It’s quite intimidating.

But,

“It’s a disappointment.”

For me, it was the deadly combination of a boss like the Grim Reaper boss appearing and summoning endless Grim Reapers that was more intimidating.

As for the boss battle, there was absolutely no need for me to get involved.

I ordered Shadow Yasha to play Nether Cerberus with his clones for several hours.

‘Your Dungeon Master rank has increased to S!’

“Alright!”

As I struck a victory pose, Shadow Yasha’s sharp tentacles pierced the last of Nether Cerberus’s heads.
