Chapter 251 – Iwo Jima Dungeon
It was mid-December when I secured the cooperation of Seiran Natsume.
About two weeks later, at the end of the year, I was in an SDF transport plane with strong vibrations.
Of course, I didn’t go through any official procedures.
Using my stealth skills, which had become second nature to me, I sneaked into Atsugi Air Base and boarded a transport plane bound for a specific location.
After a two-and-a-half-hour flight from Atsugi, we arrived at the SDF base on Iwo Jima.
“Phew… That was tough.”
Being completely silent for two and a half hours is quite nerve-racking.
On top of that, the transport plane was very bumpy, and the ride was not comfortable.
Hiding behind a building marked “Iwo Jima,” I slowly stretched my body.
“It’s finally warm…”
Located 1,250 kilometers south of Tokyo, Iwo Jima was completely unaffected by the cold December weather.
Huh? Why am I here?
Of course, it’s to conquer the S-Rank Dungeon “Iwo Jima Dungeon” located on this island.
I’ve been working behind the scenes of Asylum to conquer S-rank dungeons all over the country.
Out of the seven dungeons in the country, only the Iwo Jima Dungeon remains unconquered.
The reason this dungeon is the last one left is purely due to its location.
Among the S-Rank dungeons in the country, the ones with the best locations are the Shinjuku Station Underground Dungeon and the Shuri Castle Dungeon.
The other dungeons aren’t exactly easy to get to, but they’re still far better than Iwo Jima.
Iwo Jima is an island off-limits to all but members of the Self-Defense Forces.
However, there have been floods there many times in the past, and on those occasions, explorers affiliated with the Association were sent there.
Since then, I’ve heard that high-ranking SDF personnel are stationed at the local base to deal with any problems.
If I want to go to Iwo Jima, my options are limited.
One option is to fly there with the Karakuri UFO.
However, the Karakuri UFO has a limited flying speed.
With enough magic power, I could increase its range, but right now I want to save as many resources as possible—MP, SP, DP, mana coins, items, everything—for the Escape Crystal in the Asylum.
For the same reason, I rejected the idea of using flight magic to fly there on my own.
Another option is to summon Kudave and ride with him, but given his pride, I don’t think he’d accept being treated as a convenient means of transportation.
In that case, if I could hitch a ride on an SDF plane (without permission), I wouldn’t have to waste magic power and could save time.
By the way, I got the information about the SDF plane going to Iwo Jima from Minazawa-san at the Explorers Association Inspection Bureau.
I heard that Minazawa-san is a former SDF officer, but I don’t think he could have easily obtained sensitive information such as the takeoff and landing times of SDF planes.
I should be grateful that he took such a risk to help me.
So why am I trying so hard to get to Iwo Jima, you ask?
Well, I’ll tell you when we get there.
There’s always a chance it’ll be a waste of time.
“There’s no point in standing around. Let’s go.”
Of course, I don’t have transportation waiting for me there.
I use a combination of Shukuchi, Quick Feet, and Muscle Fatigue Nullification to move at high speed, running across the island as if I were flying.
I can run fast enough to catch up with a bullet train.
I climb the rocky mountain, looking at the map I prepared, and find the remains of war trenches.
Like the Shinjuku Station underground dungeon, the Iwo Jima dungeon has no entrance portal.
There is one direct opening to the surface.
The opening is deep inside the trench.
It’s not clearly separated from the dungeon; rather, it feels like the wartime trenches continue directly into it.
Speaking of openings, there have been an increasing number of cases recently where portals in other S- and A-rank dungeons have disappeared and openings to the surface have appeared.
The fact that the line between inside and outside the dungeon is becoming blurred probably means that dungeons are becoming more common.
So far, there have been no incidents of monsters spilling out of the dungeon in any form other than floods, but that doesn’t mean it will always be that way.
The self-defense officers who live near the S-rank dungeons on this island are probably aware of this.
There were numerous surveillance cameras near the trenches, and barricade-like structures were set up a short distance away.
A single Type 10 tank was stationed near the barricades, with its main gun aimed at the dungeon.
There were self-defense officers on guard at the barricade, but of course, I slipped past them unnoticed.
Once I was sure that I had entered the dungeon completely,
“I think I can relax now,”
I thought. There’s no such thing as “relaxing” when you’re in an S-rank dungeon, but it’s familiar territory for me.
However, even though I’m used to S-rank dungeons, this Iwo Jima dungeon is my first time here.
“I have no prior information, so I have to stay alert.
In other S-rank dungeons, there is some information about the shallow layers.
But this Iwo Jima dungeon is different.
Even the information about the island itself is practically military classified.
There’s no way the SDF would release information about the Iwo Jima dungeon to the outside world.
“I think there will be a lot of volcanic monsters or undead monsters…”
Iwo Jima was a fierce battlefield during the Pacific War.
American soldiers used flamethrowers to destroy Japanese soldiers hiding in trenches. This hellish scene actually took place on this island.
“Let’s pay our respects at the memorial on the way back.”
I’ll have to make up for the disrespect of desecrating this island by completing the mission.
If I can’t remove Tozaki from the Prime Minister’s seat, this country risks being plunged into war again.
Relations with Russia are said to be in a state of quasi-war, and there is friction with China in the East China Sea.
Even relations with the United States have cooled since Tozaki’s speech.
After all, Tozaki publicly declared his intention to increase Japan’s population to 300 million and surpass the United States.
With the wild card of a corridor to another world, it cannot be said that Japan will not emerge as a rival to the United States for hegemony in the Pacific.
This island, with its “resource” of S-rank dungeons, will once again become the target of a battle between Japan and the United States.
“Ah, the first monster. Ancient Flame Lizard Lv. 7901, Underworld Assault Trooper Lv. 7932…”
As expected for an S-rank dungeon, the status shows a number of excellent skills.
However,
“Move!”
As I spoke, a beam of light engulfed the swarm of monsters.
“Supernova is a light attribute attack spell that I modified. I didn’t give it a name because it’s nothing special.
After the light disappeared, there were no traces of the monsters left.
“No problem.”
I moved through the dungeon at high speed.
The Ancient Flame Lizard and the Underworld Assault Troopers were killed with a single hit from a nameless light magic spell.
The only monster I couldn’t defeat with magic was the Underworld Commander, who had the skill Defender’s Song, which nullifies magic attacks.
The Underworld Commander is a disembodied spirit, so normal physical attacks are also ineffective against it.
However, I have the Shadow Slayer magic sword, which I obtained in the job world.
This magic sword is effective against non-physical enemies, so I can cut through ghost-type monsters just like normal monsters.
I could sneak past them unnoticed without fighting, but I decided to fight for a while as part of my investigation.
After using the Usurper’s ability to collect all the drop items, I sped through the dungeon.
Since I have the job of Dungeon Master, I don’t get lost easily in dungeons.
The only concern is the presence of special gimmicks, but the Iwo Jima dungeon seems to have a simple structure with few gimmicks.
As I fought, ran, and descended the floors, I felt my mind relax.
It’s strange to relax while exploring an S-rank dungeon, but I’ve been stuck in the Asylum for a while now.
I can’t deny that I prefer to dive into a dungeon in silence rather than being surrounded by people and doing something.
Starting with Shaina, all the otherworldly people I’ve been protecting treat me like a savior.
The Iwo Jima dungeon was a dungeon with a single large area and only a few floors.
It was an easy dungeon for me because I knew the shortest route.
Unfortunately, I didn’t encounter any secret monsters while completing all five floors.
I did find a few hidden treasure chests, but the items inside weren’t much better than those I’ve gotten in other S-rank dungeons.
I did, however, find a gun dropped by a monster along the way.
It was the “30-year-old infantry rifle” used by the special unit—the Cabinet Secretariat’s Immediate Response Unit for Criminal Investigation.
It’s not a weapon I find particularly easy to use, but I’ll take it anyway.
“So, I’ve reached the deepest part…”
After about half a day of exploration, I arrived at the dungeon boss room.
“Oh, it’s a secret monster.”
The dungeon boss was a tank.
“Autonomous High-Performance Tank Type 02, Level 12095.”
Several drones took off from the futuristic-looking tank and attacked from the air with machine guns and rockets.
But that’s not the point.
I summoned “Raiden,” the secret dungeon boss of the Shinjuku Station Underground Dungeon, formerly known as the Super Electromagnetic Transform Mode Express Warrior.
“I’m counting on you, Raiden.”
The giant robot nodded slightly and charged into battle with the tank.
Taking advantage of the opening, I finished my long chant and dropped a giant thunderhammer on the tank.
As expected for the secret dungeon boss of an S-rank dungeon, it couldn’t be defeated with a single blow.
After I hit the tank a few more times with the thunder hammer, Raiden fired its super electromagnetic rail cannon and finished it off.
‘You defeated the dungeon boss!’
‘You have not gained any experience from the dungeon boss.’
I heard several Voice of Heaven messages,
‘Special Condition Fulfilled. You have obtained the skill Globalization (Extreme).’
Congratulations!!!────────────

Globalization (Extreme)
As long as MP allows, you can apply the effect of a single-target skill to multiple targets simultaneously.

“This is it!”
Oops, I let out a voice for the first time in a while.
Lately, the Voice of Heaven has lost its element of surprise, but this skill is definitely too amazing.
I take a moment to carefully read the description of the skill I obtained.
“With this, I might be able to speed up my plans. Oh, since this is the boss room, I should name the tank as well.”
I summoned the Autonomous High-Performance Tank Type 02 that I had just defeated and named it as usual.
There’s no need to drain the dungeon and bring it under my control.
I might have done that to get resources if I didn’t have Globalization (Extreme).
I don’t have to hitch a ride on the Self-Defence Forces plane on the way back.
I have Dungeon Travel.
Even if the dungeon entrance portal is gone, Dungeon Travel can still be activated.
With a Dungeon Master’s sense, I find a place to enter the dungeon from around here and stand nearby.
“Oh, I should check the memorial.”
I hurry through the now dimly lit island and place my hands on the memorial.
I return to the dungeon entrance and use Dungeon Travel to return to the Asylum.
Dungeon Travel is a skill that consumes a lot of energy, but time is of the essence, so it’s worth it.
