Chapter 489: Snow And Ruin [II]
Chapter 489: Snow And Ruin [II]
A deafening crack resounded through the chamber.
Stone blocks the size of carriage wheels were blasted in. Long tongues of roaring flame licked through the dust clouds, sending a wave of blistering heat rolling across the hall.
Fine chunks of concrete rained down like deadly shrapnel. And through the billows of thick smoke and showering debris, a lone silhouette burst into the room.
It was a girl of blue hair and blue-tinted purple eyes, the gradient colors making it look like there was a galaxy trapped in her gaze.
Her slender but shapely figure was clad in a sleeveless black vest and combat trousers. One of her hands was at the hilt of a guardless, single-edged cavalry sabre on her hip.
Terry was still reeling from the sudden explosion when the blue-haired girl shot toward him at breakneck speed.
“What the—?!” Surprised, he slid a foot back to regain his footing and raised his fists up. The girl closed in on him in the blink of an eye and yanked her shashka out of its scabbard in a quick draw.
She was fast. Incredibly, unfairly fast.
But Terry had sparred with many fast Cadets enough to know how to handle a rush like this.
So instead of letting the girl’s overwhelming speed throw him in a panic, Terry dropped into a low, stable stance on instincts.
As a result, when the curved blade came whistling toward his crowned head, the king of Ebony Castle ducked under the slash.
Pivoting off his back foot, he then drove a heavy right hook straight toward her exposed ribs.
Given her frail frame and the ragged, shallow way she was breathing, a clean hit from Terry’s fist should’ve caved her chest in and ended this right here.
…It didn’t.
The hit landed clean, but the power packed behind his punch was suddenly depleted. It felt like he had tried hitting layers after layers of cushion and foam.
Casey didn’t even flinch. She dragged her back foot around, rotating herself to create some space, then flicked the sword in her grip, and snapped its curved blade down on the dumpy boy.
But she was surprised to see Terry roll away in time. Despite his slightly heavy build, the guy was shockingly nimble.
Though, she didn’t get to marvel in awe for long because Alexia was already darting toward her from behind at a speed that even matched her own.
Casey huffed in annoyance, twirled her sword into a reverse grip, and pivoted — angling the blade toward the incoming blind girl’s stomach so she’d impale herself on the tip.
Of course, it was never going to be this easy.
Alexia’s left arm was out of its sling.
She had popped her dislocated shoulder back into place before rushing.
The reset had damaged countless nerves and ruptured several blood vessels, causing a white-hot, electric pain to shoot down her arm before it just went numb and cold.
A deep puncture wound still marred the front of her shoulder and collarbone, quickly turning deep purple and pumping fresh blood down her torso.
Because of the severe internal bleeding she had just caused herself and the fact that most of her deltoid muscle was already shredded, Alexia wouldn’t be able to lift or rotate her shoulder at all.
She wouldn’t have any strength in her arm, or any fine motor control for that matter. It was, at most, a dead weight locked in place.
But that was all Alexia needed right then. She tucked her elbow in and kept her bloody forearm close to her ribs, and manifested a solid bronze vambrace right over the gory limb.
Clang—!!
The sharp sound of steel against bronze rang through the smoke-filled chamber.
Instead of trying to block the sword, Alexia let it hit the slope of her arm. Casey’s reverse-gripped blade bit into the manifested bronze, but its tip just ended up sliding along the curve of the metal vambrace.
By deflecting the weapon outward, Alexia completely bypassed the shashka. She stepped right inside Casey’s guard, closing the distance before swinging her good arm forward.
THWACK—!!
The blind girl’s fist struck Casey’s nose, the impact snapping her head back. She staggered backward, her boots skidding across the marble floor. But other than that… she was completely fine.
Not even a scratch?
Because Alexia couldn’t actually see the damage, it took her a moment to realize her attack didn’t even faze the intruder. She didn’t know whether to be impressed or confused.
It wasn’t often that she came across someone who could tank a clean hit from her without a single injury to show for it.
Cocking her head, she rushed forward again.
Terry, taking the cue, also rushed in from the opposite side, flanking the blue-haired girl to create a pincer movement.
Casey turned and lashed out at the boy first, unleashing a wide slash that made him halt. Then she flicked her wrist and whirled on her heel, bringing the spine of her shashka around to catch Alexia’s lunging palm.
Alexia, in response, had to withdraw her hand mid-thrust, dropping her weight into a low sway to avoid having her wrist broken by the blunt edge of the sword.
Without stopping, Casey twirled her blade and gracefully stepped around, sweeping her shashka toward Alexia while simultaneously kicking backward with her heavy boot to keep Terry at bay.
Alexia deflected the blow with her vambrace. Even with a completely deadened left shoulder, her battle instincts were terrifying.
Any normal Cadet would’ve been outclassed.
…But Casey wasn’t any normal Cadet.
Her swordsmanship was just on another level.
Because the shashka had a heavy tip and no guard, stopping a swing midway would waste a lot of energy and leave the wrist vulnerable.
So Casey never stopped.
Literally. She never stopped moving her blade.
If a strike was blocked or deflected, she either rolled the blade around the bind or smoothly transitioned the momentum into a circular cut, always attacking from different angles like shifting from a head slash to a leg sweep without a single break in her rhythm.
The fluidity in her flow was unreal.
Unsurprisingly, the non-stop vortex of spinning figure-eight slashes soon became too much for Terry to handle. He couldn’t understand how Alexia was still keeping up.
The blind girl moved through the storm like she could see the future, always dodging and deflecting at the correct instant.
She diverted yet another slash with her metal vambrace and invaded Casey’s personal space one more time.
It wasn’t easy because Casey’s masterclass offense was working as her defense.
She used sophisticated footwork to either evade Alexia’s attacks or get out of her centreline, trying to overwhelm the shorter girl by relentlessly targeting her injured left side.
But Alexia had long since noticed the way Casey was straining whenever she needed to extend her reach or use overhead stances.
The delay was subtle— a barely-there, shallow catch in her breath every time her torso twisted to throw a high arc.
To a sighted warrior, Casey looked like an unstoppable force of nature. But to Alexia, it was clear as day that the girl had more than a few fractured ribs.
So when Alexia stepped inside her guard again, she went low this time, intending to grab Casey’s left leg, knowing full well she wouldn’t be able to twist and bring down her sword in time.
Casey, however, was also perceptive. She saw the grapple coming in time and pulled her foot out of the blind girl’s reach.
What she didn’t see coming was Alexia planting her palm on the ground instead, doing a handstand and spinning her body like she was breakdancing.
Both of Alexia’s boots lashed out in arcs for Casey’s jaw and chest.
Casey threw her weight backward, stepping outside the shorter girl’s reach, barely dodging the kick as the heels whistled past her face.
But Alexia had already dropped low, immediately transitioning into a leg sweep aimed at Casey’s shins to take her footing right out from under her.
Casey hopped backward to escape the sweep. But mid-air, her heart plummeted when she saw Alexia was now already rushing toward the exact spot she was going to land.
This girl was a demon!
Panicking, Casey brought her shashka down in a desperate overhead slash. It was a mistake. She should have waited out the assault. Why?
Because Alexia was grounded, she could shift her trajectory mid-motion— unlike Casey, who was trapped in the trajectory of her hop.
Alexia dropped even lower, pushing off the marble floor with her good hand and twisting away from the falling blade.
With a dizzying agility, she slid behind the blue-haired girl, her working arm wrapping around Casey’s left leg. In one fluid movement, Alexia then stood and yanked the leg upward.
The world went upside down for Casey. It felt as if a heavy rug had been violently pulled from beneath her feet.
Before Casey could even register the loss of gravity, Alexia spun on her heel, using the momentum to swing the airborne girl by her captured leg.
Right into the path of Terry.
Terry barreled in from the flank like a charging bull, his arm outstretched. He caught Casey with a brutal clothesline straight across the back of her head while she was being spun toward him.
Caught between two opposite forces, Casey’s body flipped and tumbled through the air before slamming into the hard stone floor.
The ground shook at the point of impact. Yet, impossibly, there was still barely a scratch on the blue-haired girl.
Wiping a smudge of soot from her cheek, Casey shook off the brain-rattling concussion and pushed herself up to her knees.
The first thing she saw was a boot speeding straight for her face.
Alexia delivered a vicious superkick right at the base of Casey’s chin.
The raw force behind Alexia’s side kick nearly knocked Casey’s head clean off her shoulders, flinging her body backward a couple of meters across the chamber.
And still, no matter how much beating she took, Casey refused to stay down.
She absorbed the momentum into a backward roll, coming up onto her feet in a low crouch, her body coiled.
Without missing a beat, she snapped her shashka back into its scabbard and flooded her knees with Essence. It seemed as if the air itself was vibrating around the girl. A metallic hum filled the air.
Then, Casey uncoiled herself like a compressed steel spring and shot straight toward Alexia.
Alexia’s brows twitched in surprise.
With no time to brace, she jumped, vaulting directly over the blue-haired girl zeroing in on her. As Casey passed beneath her in mid-air, Alexia reached down with her left hand, trying to snag the intruder’s shoulder to stop her.
But Alexia’s fingers slipped off the fabric. With her shoulder completely busted, there was simply no strength in her grip.
Gritting her teeth, in that split second, Alexia realized something. Casey had intentionally baited her vault and positioned her rush this way.
Because right behind Alexia was Terry.
As Alexia’s loose grip completely slid off Casey’s shoulder, the blue-haired girl accelerated even faster, locking her blue-tinted eyes on the King of Ebony Castle.
Terry didn’t even have time to blink.
Casey’s hand flashed.
In one blurry motion, she tugged her shashka from its sheath, executing a lightning-fast quick draw that cut through the space between them before Terry could even raise his guard.
