Chapter 375: Sizzlers
Chapter 375: Chapter 375: Sizzlers
Silas knew very well that it was time for him to retreat.
If he lingered any longer, his brother-in-law and sister-in-law would definitely take their revenge in a far less merciful manner.
The atmosphere in the room was already tense, thick with suppressed irritation and amusement mixed together.
Taking a deep breath, Silas straightened his posture and admitted defeat with surprising honesty.
"Alright, alright. I admit my mistake. I really shouldn’t be punishing a sick patient," he muttered, rubbing the back of his neck with a helpless smile.
Before anyone could press him further, Ivy immediately turned toward her siblings.
Her expression was calm but firm, her eyes carrying a quiet authority that made them pause.
"Even if you’re in the right," she said softly, "I don’t want you to continue harassing Silas."
Ember puffed out her cheeks instantly, crossing her arms in dissatisfaction.
"You really protect him like he’s some kind of national treasure," she complained, her tone half teasing and half aggrieved.
Silas couldn’t help but chuckle. The sound was light, almost smug, as he glanced sideways at Ivy.
"Well," he drawled lazily, "I’m a national treasure, or without me, you wouldn’t get your international treasure at all in the future."
For a brief moment, even Ivy froze.
Her brows knitted together as she stared at him, clearly not understanding what he meant.
The room fell into an odd silence, broken only by Felix’s sudden sharp intake of breath.
"Wait," Felix blurted out, eyes widening, "are you saying that the international treasure you’re talking about is... Ivy’s son or daughter?"
Silas turned toward him and gave an approving nod, looking genuinely impressed.
"Exactly."
Felix’s chest puffed up instantly, pride lighting up his face as if he had just solved a life-or-death puzzle.
Meanwhile, Ember and Kael exchanged helpless looks.
It wasn’t like that; he didn’t understand what Silas was hinting at, but they remained silent because it was a trap set by Silas.
’This idiot...’ both of them thought at the same time.
Seeing Felix bask so happily in Silas’s praise, Ember and Kael had the overwhelming urge to knock on his head and remind him that Silas was their enemy, not their friend.
Helping him was absolutely unacceptable.
Ivy, on the other hand, felt utterly speechless at Silas’s shameless pettiness.
Just as she was about to scold him properly, a knock echoed against the door of the room.
Felix reacted instantly. He rushed over and opened the door, only to freeze on the spot when he saw who it was.
His ears heated up, and his thoughts became a tangled mess.
’So it really is her...’
It wasn’t like he rushed out like a fool. He was expecting someone and hence had rushed to open the door.
Lately, Felix had been growing more and more inquisitive about Annie.
He knew exactly why. It was because of Megan. Because of the countless pieces of casual mentions exchanged between them, he had unknowingly begun comparing the two.
That was when he realized something important.
’I liked Megan.’
And now, he finally understood what love felt like.
Annie reminded him of Megan in certain ways, yet there was a clear difference.
Megan was lively and often present in his daily life, while Annie was intelligent, composed, and always thinking several steps ahead to solve problems.
What attracted Felix the most was Annie’s calm temperament. She didn’t look like someone who would punch a person just because they confessed their feelings.
He knew this from experience.
One day, he had blurted out that he liked her. Annie had stared at him for a long moment before letting out a quiet sigh.
"I understand," she had said back then, her voice soft, "I probably resemble your first love, Megan, a lot. But I’m not planning to become anyone’s substitute. Besides, I already have a brother I need to take care of."
Those words had made Felix feel both embarrassed and sympathetic.
Through his buddies in the military, he had learned about Annie’s family background and understood one harsh truth: Annie wasn’t just fighting zombies and survivors. She was also fighting against her own vampire-like mother.
’She’s been surviving on her own strength all this time...’
If he ever got the chance, Felix wanted to be useful to her.
That was why he had once pulled a small prank on Annie’s mother.
The result had been far better than expected, so much so that even Annie couldn’t hold back her laughter at the end.
As these thoughts crossed his mind, Felix looked at Annie again. This time, Annie lowered her gaze slightly, her fingers curling nervously at her sides.
Earlier, no one in her life had truly cared enough to stand up for her or take revenge on her behalf.
Even though Ivy had repeatedly offered her solutions, Annie understood the difference between giving advice and actually acting for someone.
Felix’s constant, clumsy care had made her feel something she rarely allowed herself to feel.
’Maybe... I’m valuable too.’
’Maybe... I can be cherished too.’
With that thought, she stood quietly at the doorway, her shy expression unmistakable.
Seeing her like that, Felix felt his heart pounding louder and faster, almost threatening to escape his chest.
Still, he restrained himself. He knew that if he rushed to confess now, people might misunderstand him, accusing him of seeing Annie as nothing more than a substitute.
Silently, he stepped aside and gestured for her to enter.
Annie walked in, then glanced at him from the corner of her eye before murmuring in a small, hesitant voice,
"I’ve... been craving sizzlers a lot lately."
Felix’s eyes lit up instantly. He straightened his back, energy surging through him.
Recently, he had unknowingly picked up a new habit.
Cooking for the person he cared about the most.
Even though he admitted that he mainly did so for Annie, this habit benefits him a lot!
"Meet me at my secret hideout tonight; I will make mushroom sizzlers with fried rice for you."
