Chapter 400: Seeds
Chapter 400: Chapter 400: Seeds
Helena nodded. "From our experience, if you could recall a past life... or be reborn... then there’s a high chance it was the being’s DNA that made it possible."
For the first time, Ivy looked at them and felt that her parents were genuinely trying to protect her.
She shook her head slightly. "Maybe it’s not that simple," she said.
Seeing their confusion, she continued, her voice low.
"There are memories I can’t access. Missing pieces. I think they’re hiding something important. Maybe this life will be different. Maybe the apocalypse will end soon. Or maybe it will bring something more dangerous."
She fell silent after that.
Turning away, Ivy walked into the bathroom and shut the door behind her. She didn’t want to face them anymore.
Even though everything they had done was for her sake, resentment still bubbled painfully in her chest.
Meanwhile, far away from her, Moona and Maxi were finally waking up.
They had almost slept for two full days. The moment consciousness returned, both of them instinctively stretched, their stiff limbs cracking softly, before their eyes fluttered open.
For a brief second, everything felt hazy and warm. Then reality hit.
With wary gazes, they froze.
The ceiling above them was unfamiliar.
In an instant, their hearts tightened. Without hesitation, both of them sprang up from the soft bed, the unfamiliar softness sinking beneath their palms and feet.
Their eyes widened as they spun around, breaths turning shallow, every nerve screaming alertness.
’This... isn’t our room.’
Only after looking around properly did they realize just how different this place was.
The room was astonishingly clean.
Compared to the rented apartment they had lived in at their previous base, where water constantly dripped somewhere above, cracks webbed across the ceiling, moss crawled greedily over damp walls, and the air was permanently stained with rust and the sour stench of human waste, this place felt unreal.
There was no moldy smell. No damp chill clinging to their skin. No metallic tang burning their noses.
Instead, the air smelled faintly fresh, almost neutral.
The bedroom was spacious. A large bed sat neatly in the center, its sheets smooth and unwrinkled.
A cabinet stood against the wall, solid and intact, accompanied by only a few essential items placed with care.
To one side, a bathroom was directly connected, its door slightly ajar, revealing clean tiles that reflected the soft light.
Moona and Maxi stared, stunned.
Then memory rushed back.
’Ivy...’
They remembered arriving here, half-conscious, with Ivy’s help. The realization made their shoulders loosen slightly. Slowly, they stepped out of the bedroom and looked around.
The living room was exactly the same as before.
The familiar sofa sat there quietly, the same one they had collapsed onto earlier.
It suddenly became obvious that Ivy had carried them to the bed afterward. The thought made something warm and strange settle in their chests.
They both let out long, quiet sighs and sat down on the sofa, its cushions hugging their exhausted bodies.
Moona glanced around once more, her voice low and almost disbelieving.
"We really... hit the jackpot."
Her fingers clenched lightly against her clothes.
Earlier, she hadn’t even dared to dream of a normal life. Safety, cleanliness, comfort, those things had felt like luxuries meant for someone else. Yet here they were, treated like guests rather than burdens.
’Which god did we worship to reach the pinnacle of life so early...?’
Maxi, however, frowned slightly, her thoughts moving in a different direction.
"Ivy is treating us too well."
Moona paused, recalling Ivy’s calm expressions and measured words. After a moment, she nodded slowly.
"It is strange... From the way she behaves, it feels like she’s been through something similar before."
Hearing that, Maxi remembered Ivy’s eyes during the negotiation, steady and guarded, yet laced with something old and tired. She nodded.
"Yeah. It looked like she was experimented on even before she joined this base."
If that was true, then Ivy was far more pitiful than they had first thought.
Moona nodded firmly.
"Then we shouldn’t make things difficult for her. Not at all."
Maxi agreed without hesitation.
"She gave us a home. She gave us food. Even if there isn’t enough now, she still showed us kindness."
The contract they had signed was clearly for their benefit as well. Thinking about it, both of them suddenly felt lighter, almost giddy. Their stomachs, however, chose that exact moment to growl loudly.
They froze.
Then exchanged looks.
For a moment, they wondered if they should go take a look around. Ivy had promised to build a grocery store nearby, but realistically, could something like that be done in just two days?
Still, curiosity pushed them forward.
They stepped out and froze.
Sure enough, near their tower stood a small grocery-like store, its shelves visibly stocked with various items.
For a few seconds, both Moona and Maxi were completely stunned. Then their hearts swelled so suddenly it almost hurt.
Without another word, they rushed in.
Unlike the main grocery store, where strict limits were imposed per person, there was no such restriction here.
Their restraint vanished instantly. They began grabbing instant noodles, one variety after another, until their arms were full.
By the time they stopped, each of them had bought nearly a hundred instant noodles of every type.
As they carried everything back, embarrassment crept in belatedly.
’Will Ivy think we’re shameless?’
’Will she kick us out for acting like country bumpkins?’
The worry lingered, but hunger won.
Back in the apartment, they didn’t hesitate. Cups and packets were torn open, hot water poured, steam rising and fogging the room with the familiar salty aroma of instant noodles. They devoured them one after another, barely stopping to breathe.
By the time Moona reached her fiftieth cup, she finally felt slightly full.
Only after finishing a hundred did her stomach feel about half-filled.
Maxi wasn’t much better.
Left with no choice, they continued, switching flavors mechanically. When it was finally over, both of them leaned back and patted their stomachs, groaning softly.
